Title: Fall Colors Up Close
Post by Midnightrider on 10/12/10 at 08:49:13

My wifes childhood best friend flew in Sunday to spend a few days with us. They grew up together in California. They havent seen each other in over 30 years. They wanted to do something special yesterday so I loaded up our bicycles and drove them to Damascus Virginia to ride the world famous Virginia Creeper Trail. They grew up together riding their bicycles through the streets of Bakersfield. Yesterday was like old times, riding bicycles together again after all these years. Couldnt ask for a better day, the weather was perfect and the fall leaves were at their peak. Here are a few pics. This is where the trail starts, at the top of Whitetop Mountainhttp://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper024.jpg                                   A little history of the trail.http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper001.jpg                                    California Girlshttp://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper008.jpg                                 Fall Colors              http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper023-1.jpg                          An old train trestle converted to a bridge                   http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper003.jpg                           This is one beautiful trail                      http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper005.jpg                         Cooling off spot                         http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/VirginiaCreeper020.jpg                                           An old train station converted to a gift and snack shop. Beautiful pics. You have a nice place to ride out there! Using the old train routes for bike parks is a great idea! I used to ride the KATY trail through Missouri with my son when he was younger. Haven't been out there in about 5 years! I guess I'm getting a little fat and lazy these days!

Paw there is a non profit organization called "Rails To Trails" that buys old railway easements and turns them into biking and hiking trails. Its a great organization.

I took this picture of the yard across the street from where I work. It's the side yard of a horse doctor. No horses there at the time but the colors are nice and I thought it made a nice picture.
