Title: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (hands) Post by Stimpy - FSO on 10/13/10 at 16:16:28 So I'm riding back and forth to work everyday on my bike, it's about 12miles (20km) each way and let me tell you that between the view, the trees, the curves and fresh air its a hell of a commute... till 3 days ago that is when the thermometer suddenly dropped at nights from fresh fall to dead zero (0C/32f) and now I cannot feel my fingers (thumb & index mainly). Boots, pants and 2 good jackets keep me toasty during the ride but my hands are killing me; I have some acerbis guards but are not too useful except for bugs and branches and 12v hot-grips I think would drain my battery cause I'm already running 2x 55w lamps I NEED to spot deer. I was thinking of maybe sacrificing motorcycle glove protection for some mountain climbing gloves or something, any ideas? L8r, Richard. |

Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by verslagen1 on 10/13/10 at 17:16:52 yes and you need a bmw to keep your tootsies warm. silk glove liners might be a little better. at least another layer. |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by babyhog on 10/13/10 at 17:38:33 Put some "hot hands" inside your gloves. I use them while hunting. They also have "Toastie Toes" that are shaped like the front of your shoe/boot, and stick to the bottom of your socks! http://www.heatmax.com/HotHands/productpics/53-HH2-gold.jpg |

Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by jef.savage on 10/13/10 at 19:35:00 I have some silk glove liners that I use under my warmest gloves but I haven't had to get them out yet. |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by kimchris1 on 10/13/10 at 19:49:22 I have a pair of snowmobiling gloves. They keep the fingers warm as well as dry. Of course I have a cut off temp of 40 when I ride..:) kim |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by spacepirates on 10/13/10 at 22:08:32 http://www.glacieroutdoor.com/products_cycling.php glacier gloves! water proof, wind proof, flexible, curved for comfort. they cost a bit much, but my pair was a gift a few christmases ago. they are fantastic in the cold, and i'll ride any time the roads are dry. coldest is around 17 degrees so far... if you have leather gloves, my advice is to hug the jug! just reach down at any stoplights and grip that engine! what a wonderful source of heat we have right beneath us! |

Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by 12Bravo on 10/14/10 at 05:27:37 I use ski gloves and thin glove liners most of the time. I Have used nitrile (latex) gloves under leather gloves in a pinch and they work really well. |

;D ;D ;D Yep !!! Rode my new BMW from Florence to Rome last Saturday night, 200 miles waaay after sundown, wanted to make it by dinnertime so I cruised away at a leisurely 140+km/h (90mph). Leather gloves are nice but electric heated grips are the way to go ! 8-) Anyway, I must agree with 12Bravo and Kimchris. On the Savage I use a pair of Thinsulate ski gloves (not mitts, ensure you have all 5 fingers ! ) they work a charm. Glove liners are a very good idea (silk is nice but some sinthetic is just as effective) they also help to "fill up" the glove and do away with possible slack which is typical of ski gloves. Oh, and don't forget that can of H&B Hofbrau strapped to the rear seat !!! ;) |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/14/10 at 07:15:14 A leather glove with a brown jersey glove inside it is pretty decent. If quick, cheap & easy is the goal, |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by mornhm - FSO on 10/14/10 at 07:43:44 I have a pair of heated gloves for when the weather gets really bad. My heated jacket keeps my arms warm, so most of the time I don't even need the gloves turned on. One other benefit of the Concours is that the mirrors deflect most of the air away from your hands. This helps a lot. |

Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by Stimpy - FSO on 10/14/10 at 20:09:20 Thanks for all the input, hope this thread is useful to others cause its just plain dangerous to ride with half-frozen, unresponsive limbs. Btw, love the bmw "duck" gloves! The latex glove + regular insuladed lether gloves thing worked but I'm still scanning the web for a good deal on weatherproof outdoor gloves. Thanks again! |

You need to put sun tan lotion on when it's cold, then UV rays get angry when it's cold. |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by Stimpy - FSO on 10/19/10 at 15:04:50 As I was telling you, last week I traded my vented bike gloves for my trusty leather gloves with fleece inside plus latex gloves worn on the inside as insulation, it worked, big difference! it's all about layers and keeping the wind out. Today I got in the mail a pair of Burton Snowboarding gloves I found on sale for 19 euros that are supposed to be wind and waterproof and guaranteed to keep your hands warm at down to -20C (-4f), excluding windshield factor of course. They are flexible enough to operate all controls, including turn signals and have a tough kevlar-like palm finish designed for sharp, icy falls so they should be fine for biking. I got'em in black. I'll will keep you updated on their performance after I try them a couple of times this week on my way back from work @ around 0C (32f). http://www.blue-tomato.com/medias/MkXymNhaW7kcyVklhU3IEb-30.jpg |

Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by Lupo on 10/21/10 at 21:35:04 I do a lot of touring (not with the LS) and get caught in the cold. I hate bulky gloves and started using these a few years back. They can still get cold in extreme weather/time conditions but metallic liners or latex add a bit more warmth. I don't want electric because I use an electric vest and or running lights. Better prices at other places but this is Olympia's site with MSRP so you can see, shop elsewhere ;)http://shop.olympiagloves.com/GT-4100-Weatherking-Extra-II-4100.htm |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by Stimpy - FSO on 10/22/10 at 03:02:52 Update: After riding with my new snowboarding gloves for a couple of nights at 26.6f/-3C @ 45-65mph/100ish kph - I'm happy to say that these are officially the warmest gloves I've ever owned and make the ride tolerable. - but I also noticed that blood is somehow reaching my fingertips already cold and because of this, at the end, these gloves are not that much different when compared with my old leather/fleece gloves. ...I now need to figure out how to better insulate my forearm and specially inner elbow, sigh. http://www.abc-of-snowboarding.com/images/hypothermia.gif Hypothermia meter... No shivering yet! :D |
Title: Re: So what are you guys doing about the cold? (ha Post by mick on 10/22/10 at 06:41:16 take some advice from hobos and me I never owned a car in England for several years so my bike was it, I had a barbour suit ,suposed to be the best expensive but my sister worked it there factory and got me a break. If you want to beat the cold just wrap your arms down to your wrists in newspaper, same with your legs, works wonders use a few elastic band to keep the paper in place. |
