Title: bike ins. pay out
Post by alcoa on 10/27/10 at 11:48:17

After my run in with the deer I called my insu. company. The policy says I got $1000.00 on me for medical thats it, they said if I had a another pearson on and NOT my wife they would get a $1000.00 for medical.  CK. YOUR POLICYS NOW. I could get a rider for $50000.00 THATS ONLY GOOD IF I HIT A PEARSON WALKING.

If you're going to save money, save it on the bike coverage.
Put the max coverage on yourself.  A few years ago, they recommended 300k medical on the car.  I'll have to check, but think I got 500k

Our Ins. didn't pay for our bikes either. We have full coverage on all bikes but since I hit my husband and we are on the same policy,we can't make a claim against ourselves. $1700.00 later, both bikes are back together.

The stories are somewhat unclear, but in general medical coverage for the operator or passenger on a motorcycle is either very limited or non-existent. That is because, very simply, the insurance companies realise that riding a motorcycle is a lot more likely to result in injury or death than riding in a car. You are going to be relying on whatever other healthcare you may have. That may come from the other party's liability coverage (if they are at fault) or your healthcare coverage from your employment. As was said, read your policy. If you get into a crash, for whatever reason, the ambulance ride is likely to cost $1000 and the visit to the emergency room several thousand more. If you get helicoptered somewhere that ride alone may be ten grand. And you won't even enjoy it.

Check your state laws. My dad wrecked his bike all by himself. He has this enormous chocolate lab-200 pounds, this dog needs worms because she is so fat! Any way, he was bringing his bike out from the back yard on high idle. He has to work his way between the fence and 2 parked cars in the drive way. The dog came flying out of the house and jumped on the wood fence and knock it don on him. That caused him to let go of the bars (fully engage the clutch at 1800rpm) while in first. he bounced off the first car, hit the fence, bounced off the truck, out into the street. he panicked and grabbed a handful of front brake and dropped it in the gutter pan on the other side of the road. Got his left leg trapped under the still running bike! I live 2 doors down and saw him shoot across the street and pancake it. I went running over and tossed the bike off him. When I flipped the bike off of him, it hit the tank on the other side and dented it pretty good. Anyway, 2005 Bonneville America......$3561 to fix it. Insurance had no problems paying the claim against himself. They even gave him $350 more to fix the fence! Full coverage is full coverage, period. Always read the fine print and check your local laws for certain rights that you can not be denied, even IF the agency says 'we don't cover cover that since you caused....'

Charon is correct about how it's usually handled. Most m/c policies are minimal if any for personal injury. Years ago after my "big get off" everything was handled under my personal health insurance. Costs were a bit over $30,000 and that was in 1982. For about 2 years I kept getting papers to be filled out and signed stating I had no other insurance coverage. Because of the way m/c insurance is written I don't buy into the freedom of choice argument about the helmet laws. The average guy who slaps his bare head on a curb and ends up chaired, guess who'll be taking care of him? I know, different subject.

Sorry I didn't make it clear. Our motorcycle Ins. wouldn't pay for anything. They told my husband sorry & to read the fine print. Since I hit him they wouldn't cover it because we would be making a claim against ourselves and that you can't do. (still unclear to me).  :-/ My husband's medical ins. covered my medical as well as the ambulance ride thank goodness

Thanks! I'll try to get my husband to look into it!

Ok here is what I have discovered with my accident.

Your policy should have a p.i.p. that stands for Personal Injury Protection.
Also if your like me, I have uninsured as well as underinsured. That may come in handy later on.
Dr's offices will ask for your p.i.p. as they don't bill 3rd parties. If someone else hits you as in my case, that is a 3rd party.
Our personal health insurance has paid all my medical so far. My attorney advised me that they can even ask for repayment if and when a settlement is reached with the other drivers insurance company.
Check your p.i.p. and place the coverage there as that should also pay for repairs or replacement of gear.
Each state as well as insurance company varies. If you have to go in,  and have a one on one discussion with your insurance agent  I would advise it before thinking your covered. kim

Hmmmm, insurance. I'll have to get some of that if I EVER land a JOB.

Because my relatively low initial investment in this bike (used) and not being worth a large sum of $$$ I chose liability insurance only (required by law too) but have increased levels of coverage. Unless you buy these bikes new or are using bank financing (loans) it's not worth having full coverage in my opinion.

The payouts on "full coverage" aren't very high, either. At most you'll get the blue book retail, and more likely the blue book trade-in value. Once damages exceed that dollar amount, the bike is totalled and the insurance company takes it. Same thing is likely to happen if some else is at fault and hits your bike. Their liability insurance will limit out at the blue book for your bike.

By the way, your liability insurance typically has three numbers, such as 100/300/10. The first is the liability to one person; the second the total liability the insurance company will pay; the third the property damage liability. With the prices and repair costs of today's cars, how much do you think it might cost if you run into the front of a Lexus, causing its air bag to deploy, damaging the body work, the air conditioner, the cooling system, and maybe the engine?

No injury coverage at all for riders here in NJ. Passengers yes, but none for the rider. Need to use our personal health insurance if we get hurt. If no health insurance and big injuries....well......you're screwed.

I have no idea what a wreck like that would cost my widow.
