Title: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Howitzer on 11/01/10 at 21:39:43 I finally opened up my bike today and "cleaned" out the air filter. All I did was spray some of that compressed air in a can over the filter, and then tapped all the loosened dust out. The filter was pretty clean in the first place, but I did it more of as a way to get familiar with my bike. It took a week of finding the right time, and buying all my tools, before I could finally do this. I feel a lot more confident about doing maintenance on my '06 S-40 though, now that I've done something once. |

Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Arnold on 11/03/10 at 04:55:30 Ahhh, a black box for a bike. They dont make that, yet... |
|
Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Charon on 11/03/10 at 08:15:21 Don't bet heavily they don't make "black boxes" for bikes. All it requires is flash memory in the ABS and/or engine management computers, for those bikes with fuel injection. Honda already has an air bag on one of their Gold Wings, and air bag triggering is one of the events the "black box" is designed to store. Add an impact sensor and/or a bank angle sensor to "freeze" the data, and you have it. Many bikes already have the bank angle sensor, used to shut down the engine if the bike falls over. |

Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Arnold on 11/03/10 at 08:25:23 And that is why I bought a simple Savage, in an attempt to keep electronics out. |

Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Charon on 11/03/10 at 08:42:34 Yet even the Simple Savage has electronic ignition and an electronic voltage regulator. |

Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by ralfyguy on 11/03/10 at 19:13:45 I have an app on my Blackberry called GPS tracker. It records average speed, maximum speed, traveled distance, time traveled and even tracks the route traveled on a map. It also does current speed, but I didn't wanna check current speed on a phone while riding. So one time I tested it on the superslab, started recording before I left and cracked it open for just a little while and reached an indicated almost 90mph before I let off. She was still going. When I came home and checked the data, it showed that I reached a maximum of 88mph. Next time I go, I start the recording and see what she can do and let her fly. Seems the speedo is dead on. |

Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by mornhm - FSO on 11/04/10 at 13:50:31 Most of those apps also provide your information to stores that you walk in, what you shop for, etc. I think that is JOG's point, that you are providing the evidence for a slam dunk conviction. |

so you had to save up for that phillips head screwdriver to get the airbox cover off? |
|
Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Howitzer on 11/06/10 at 22:34:31 No, I had to go buy a socket wrench, and then socket allen heads to take the seat off. It doesn't take a week to just buy a screw driver obviously. |
|
Title: Re: Opened up my bike for the first time. Post by Charon on 11/07/10 at 09:32:03 Might take longer than a week, if you go looking for the proper screwdriver, which is not a Philips at all. Lotsa luck finding a JIS screwdriver at your local tool emporium. |

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 11/07/10 at 10:06:01 http://www.rjrcooltools.com/vessel.cfm Makes understanding how the upper shoulders get rubbed out easier. Looks like JIS has a sharper tip, so a #2 would ride high, fill the slots right at the top & not fill the slots down lower in the head of the screw. Now that Ive seen a pic, I think Ive got a small one of those. More of a heavy jewelry driver size than useful on a bike. |

A few other places to find these screwdrivers: I got all but one of my JIS screwdrivers here: http://www.amessupply.com/products1.cfm?aid=1&cid=D&sid=DE&fid=1404070 Quality is good. I got a #3 JIS screwdriver here: http://www.mcmaster.com/#jis-(japanese-industrial-standard)-screwdrivers/=670nes Quality is average.....but still good enough for working on a Savage. IHTH! |
