Title: NASA finds new form of life?
Post by Boule’tard on 12/02/10 at 08:16:26

If this is true, it is pretty fascinating.  http://gizmodo.com/5704158/nasa-finds-new-life

DNA that incorporates arsenic has been found in lake Mono, CA.  The article is pretty light on details, and as a skeptic I would not be surprised to see this debunked.  And we know life can adapt to toxic conditions, but this is different.

There are tube worms that live on the ocean floor that live in extreme heat & a constant flow of toxic mess. not sure theyre even carbon based, idk.

I love this quote from the comments section of the link...

"NASA discovers new life form. Chinese scientists already working on ways to cook and eat it."

;D ;D ;D....

religion has never claimed that life as we know it is the only form of life, that's science that claimed that

Guys.. not at all.. the "as we know it" part has merely expanded to include a new element, one that's poisonous to other forms of life.  We have known for a long time that life adapts to harsh conditions (like the sea vents JOG points out) but those bugs subsituting arsenic for phosphorus in their DNA.. that's pretty awesome.

Wonder how long it will be before it gets spliced into some food crop ... a la the BT gene spliced into broccoli to kill the caterpillars and worms that munched on it.

Naw, that lettuce tastes funny to me ....      :o

Broadcasting to all Star Trek fans out there...

All you Trekkies, yo !

Have you already forgotten that wonderful episode in Series 1 (with Bill Shatner and Leonard Nimoy) where thay land on a planet where all life is based on silicium instead of carbon?
Where plants grow as crystals and sand is actually insects?

The authors realized that in the Table of Elements Silicium sits right under Carbon - hence it works just like carbon, chemically speaking, only that the "chemical offspring" will be different.
In our case, plants like crystals, flying sand and rock-like earthworms.

Here on our planet, our blood is red because hemoglobin is chemically based on iron.

But in mussels, octopus and squid, blood is based on copper.
They are much stronger, but run out of wind much earlier.
That is why a scuba diver will, if lucky, successfully "win" when wrestling an aggressive 5ft. squid

So arsenic-based DNA? Why not ? After all, haven't we got poisonous plants from which we draw life-saving medicines?
:)

I was so eager to post my own reply I did so before reading Bouletard's link.

They too mention Star Trek... ::)

So, I'm not the only Trekkie on this Forum, eh ?  ;)
