Title: stories of bugs Post by LostArtist on 12/03/10 at 14:05:01 so got an email from victory about a mythbusters episode http://www.polarisindustries.com/en-us/Victory-Motorcycles/Experience/Pages/0000Discovery.aspx?WT.mc_id=E3071094-66FE-DF11-BCF9-0017A4A77F44&WT.mc_ev=email&WT.mc_id= about what happens when a motorcyclist hits a bug and if they could be killed by bugs or something. so did anyone see this? it ran Wed. I'll start, hit a huge dragonfly once, thing exploded all over my helmet, also hit one of those big flying cockroaches we have here, sounded like a rock and it exploded with red blood and white guts, reason to where helmet right there |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by prechermike on 12/03/10 at 14:26:20 I saw part of that one, I think, maybe it was the ad for it. I can't remember, anyway I did not see the whole thing. Of course, I could have just fallen asleep in the chair. Anyway, my bug story. I was riding my Honda fourtrax 300 ATV on dirt roads with my daddy. For some reason I had on a good shirt and for some reason I decided to take it off, so as to not get it dirty. As I was riding along, maybe 25-30 mph, some BIG hornet thing appeared and hit me right in the middle of the chest, stinger first, I think. That think whelped me up pretty good. That was the worst, but like everyone else I have had bigs hit my legs. Makes me thankful for my jeans. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/03/10 at 14:42:32 I saw some guy get killed by a grasshopper. He was racing at Isle of Mann & one splattered across his visor. He was clawing at his visor, trying to get to where he could see, as he was headed into a long sweeper. I guess that was before tear offs.. sad darned thing to see.. I saw a guy jump off a bike & start clawing at his throat once in Tyler,,I guess he hit something with a stinger.. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by Serowbot on 12/03/10 at 16:10:25 I ran through a bee swarm once,... musta' hit about 60 of them directly... it sounded like a hailstorm in my helmet... Pulled over and did a 30 second wacky dance on the side of the road... :-?... |

Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by stinger on 12/04/10 at 01:45:36 I was riding across the mid west on my savage and decided to see what it was like riding without my full face helmet. My head got fried from the sun so I put it back on and had some kind of black bird with a red breast smash into my visor at 60+ mph. would have caved my face in. Wasn't a bug but same idea. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by odmanout on 12/04/10 at 05:25:24 Bugs and birds: Years ago a great big fat june bug committed suicide on my helmet front dead center. I lacquered over it. Quite a conversation piece. Again years ago we had a major infestation of june bugs to the point they were an inch thick under the street lights. Cars and bikes were skidding off the roads. Not bike related: While returning from our honeymoon camping in Algonquin Park in a '67 Chev van I was going about 80 in one direction and a humming bird was going about 80 in the opposite direction and hit the van on the vent intake. Thump, and the inside of the van filled up with pin feathers. The entire bird except for the head, went through the 1/4" slot in the vent, breaking every bone. except the skull. Also not bike related: I was driving to work going about 70 and in the distance I saw 4 or 5 pigeons right in the middle of my lane pecking at some scraps of food on the road. All flew away except one who started walking towards me. I figured it would eventually take off but it didn't. I drove over it and looked in the rear view to see if I'd killed it. After tumbling over a few times it continued to walk down the center of the lane as if nothing had happened. My car does not have much ground clearance so either it ducked or was knocked down by air pressure. It did not appear to be hurt. How can you tell if a biker is happy? By the bugs on his teeth. I have learned to keep my mouth shut while riding (after catching a few in my mouth. ;D |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by BurnPgh on 12/04/10 at 05:44:09 june bug in the face. Like getting shot with a frozen paint ball. Small bird to my right shoulder. Leather took a lot of that impact but i had a good bruise for a couple weeks. Like having someone hit you with a hammer as hard as they can. The worst ever though, my first year riding I got a hornet up my right sleeve. Didnt notice until I came to stop light and it started stinging me repeatedly....in the armpit. The line behind me had to wait while I fumbled as fast as possible to get my effing jacket off and i ended up with a golfball sized welt that wouldnt not stop throbbing for the rest of the day and a good bit of the next. |

Cars and bikes were skidding off the roads. YOu guys shoulda had ducks imported.. OHHH, talk about slick streets tho... yukkk.. At first, when I got the bike, I was so into riding & being "out there" I just had goggles to protect my eyes & I was wearing contacts,( No more contacts for me, thanks). I took a few bugs to the face, & yea, the difference between a June Bug & a small pebble? One has legs. Its amazing how much pain ya can take when youre having fun. |

THe one that hit me in the face was a starling I think, Judging by the remains that stuck to the face shield and chin guard. He won't have the guts to do that again, I know cause I got them, and they stink. Phelonius |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by mick on 12/04/10 at 09:45:40 What exactly are june bugs ? I might have run into the while trucking down south,Are they all black ? about the size of a half dollar? Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by verslagen1 on 12/04/10 at 10:24:03 Those are gnats. a june bug is a brown beetle about as big as the end of your thumb. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by Serowbot on 12/04/10 at 14:37:33 I just got back from a little 50 mile putt,.... wearing just a T-shirt in December, and thinkin'... "How lovely is this?"... and right then a bug flew into my shirt and bit me on the back of the neck... Bastard!... :-?... |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by JohnBoy on 12/04/10 at 16:17:13 I was riding on a guiet country road at about 40mph, with my visor up, singing a happy tune. Some flying critter bounced off the back of my throat. In the time it took me to stop my throat swelled and it was touch and go for the next 15 minutes. I was brought to my knees by a critter the size of a June bug! |

Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by Midnightrider on 12/04/10 at 17:33:07 Was riding home from the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally with a group of guys back in the 90's. One of the riders wearing only jeans and a leather vest hit a seven year locust. He took it in the shoulder next to his leather vest. Went in like a bullet. Had to stop at the emergency room in Greensboro and have the locust cut out of him like a bullet. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by piglt on 12/04/10 at 19:33:02 Had to be at work at 5am one morning, it was kind of chilly so I wore my pretty pink leathers. As soon as I walked in the door one of my co-workers pointed and laughed and asked me what I ran into. I knew something had hit me, just figured it was a big bug, no where big enough to be a bird. Between the brown furry stuff and the little feet looking things we figured it was a bat. It must have taken a straight shot upwards after it hit me because it was all over the left shoulder of my jacket and all over the side of my helmet. It was kind of a gross mess to clean but I was glad I had both of them on. :D |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by Bug Chaser on 12/05/10 at 08:57:47 Living and riding in South Florida I have splattered my share of bugs. Usually in the Summer you have to clean off the visor every time you stop. This summer I was taking a ride West on the Bee Line Hwy about 10:00AM when I saw it coming towards me, a Palmetto bug about 3 inches long. Bang! It hit my helmet visor and snapped my neck back. I momentarily lost control and swerved it right into the water filled swale on the side of the road. The Palmetto was the classic big brown Florida type. The bike and I was in about two feet of water, and it all smelled like a septic tank! Pushed the bike back onto the road, took my favorite tee shirt off and wiped down all that I could. I noticed that the bug actually put a mark on the visor about an inch long. The bike farted then started after about 10 minutes of playing with it. Road home looking like Swamp road kill. The 30-minute ride back home dried me off and left a nice rancid crust on everything. Took about three hours to clean and fix the bike. Being totally pissed off gave me the incentive to just get it done. I stripped and grabbed some Go Jo soap and hosed myself off in the back yard before taking a much-needed shower. Wife made sure to level as much abuse as verbally possible while I was delousing myself outside. I think she burned my favorite tee shirt as soon as she heard the shower turn on. That night I went online and bought a windshield. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by kimchris1 on 12/05/10 at 11:28:34 So is that how you came up with your forum name? A couple years ago I was riding home on the bike, I had my ff helmet on and the visor down. All of a sudden, kepsplat...It was loud and left a nasty mess on my visor. I remember a large black bug. ICKKkk.. Also I have had birds release themselves and have it land on my visor. So far when that has happened my visor was closed. Then here is a story not mc related yet bug related. I was driving in my truck between Sacramento and Marysville Ca. Along the roadside are rice fields. It was Spring and about 10 pm. Before I even knew it I was surrounded by bugs.. My windshield got to splattered the washer fluid couldn't even wash the windshield completly clean. As soon as I could I got to a gas station and I was not the only one there trying to get the mess off my windshield. My entire grill, headlights as well as visor were completly covered in bugs. I have never had that happen since and sure would hate to have been on a bike then as well.. |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by Phelonius on 12/05/10 at 12:30:55 But you could save the price of dinner by riding with your mouth open. It's really just a matter of taste. Phelonius |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by stinger on 12/05/10 at 16:02:05 Out here in the West bugs are not a big problem usually. Even mosquitoes don't come out til the late evening. When I was riding my bike in Illinois it was around noon and the temp was 90. I had sweat dripping of my chin at traffic lights and mosquitoes were landing on my forearms and neck in droves. Not to sure I could live there. Beautiful country and great people tho. Just big bugs, and I hate bugs! |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by Ed L. on 12/05/10 at 16:33:53 I was out riding last year during Love Bug season and rode through a huge cloud of them. They coated my face shield so bad I had to turn into a gas station and use a windshield washer squege to scrub the mess off. I didn't even take the helmet off, just scrubbed away with it still on my head. Got some real strange looks from the drivers at the pumps. |

Ive done that. IDK why they look at me like that..its a lot easier than holding it in one hand & scrubbing with the other. Seems they get a bigger giggle out of when I use the squegee end more than the scrubber end |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by wayne929 on 12/06/10 at 17:49:57 bug chaser, i know everything your talking about down here. live over in fort myers. gotta stop every hour to wipe the glasses off and it looks like someone threw pepper on my face within 30 sec or going anywhere. the worst is weaing anything but a black shirt! |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by babyhog on 12/06/10 at 17:57:04 I guess I've been lucky because I don't have any good personal bug stories.... yet... the usual buggy windshield and face shield, but nothing major. My hubby, on the other hand, had a yellow jacket fly down the back of his shirt, from the neck down. First thought was to take his shirt off, but he couldn't get it off because of his helmet! He said it was a pretty funny sight to watch! |

When I was a kid I once caught one live as it was emerging from its shell. I tied a piece of very light fishing line around its' middle and with about ten feet of line on a small bamboo fishpole, I flew it around the neighborhood like a toy airplane. It even made its' own engine sound. Locusts were fun. Phelonius |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by mornhm - FSO on 12/07/10 at 10:40:26 Not really a bug story, but when a pheasant flies into the passenger side of a car at highway speed, the passenger ends up in the driver's seat. Still not real sure how I managed to keep that one on the road. (This was in the days of bench seats, and no seat belts.) |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by odmanout on 12/07/10 at 14:54:01 I used to do that with bumble bees and thread! ;D |
Title: Re: stories of bugs Post by John_D FSO on 12/08/10 at 00:30:11 I've had some pretty good sized bugs crack on the FF shield before I got my windshield, some made a pretty colorful mess. ;D My worst bug incident happened in the same stretch of road as my closest call with a bird too. The bug was something with a stinger that went up my left jacket sleeve and started stinging me in the inside of my elbow. Held the clutch in and coasted to the side of the road while trying to smash it with my right hand. Got pulled over and out of the jacket, and shook something dark and smooshed out of it. Thinking it was a yellowjacket since I ended up with a couple little welts that itched, which is my standard reaction to wasps. The bird was almost in the same spot, cruising along at about 40 mph, with my buddy behind me. Bird came cruising in from the right and right in front of my face, cleared me by probably less than a foot. :o Friend said he thought for sure I was going to hit it! ;D |
