Title: My very first oil change Post by kimchris1 on 12/16/10 at 12:02:11 I am soo proud of myself. Today armed with my wrenches, filter and oil I challenged myself. Ok so to most of you it may not seem like such a big deal. But were talking of a woman that has never done an oil change in her life. Oh I know where the oil goes how to check and even add. I just never took on this task before. Hubby would have done it yet again, I wanted to know that I could on my own. I even leaned it to the side to make sure I was getting it all. Oh and I even did the filter.. I feel so good as knowing I can do this gives me confidence I can tackle other things as I need to. I would like to thank the technical section as that helped me alot. The hardest part was getting the drain plug back on. We don't have a lift, so I was laying on my side and seems about the time I got it back on, it would slip and fall. I never gave up and finally got it and the filter changed and new oil in. Varroomm Genie sounds great and is now ready for her bubble bath.. :) kim |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by verslagen1 on 12/16/10 at 12:10:09 There's a trick to that. Hold the bolt in place with your index finger and spin the bolt with your thumb and middle finger. |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by ALfromN.H. on 12/16/10 at 15:21:47 you'll have to try changing your front brake pads next. Thats an easy job that'll give you more confidence. Good job on the oil change. ;) AL |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by bill67 on 12/16/10 at 15:31:34 I always turn the drain plug to the left a little then to the right To me that seems to line it up. |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by prechermike on 12/16/10 at 16:10:19 COOL!! I knew you could do it! :D |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by Boofer on 12/16/10 at 16:42:52 I will get no disagreement from this bunch on this....Timely oil changes are the one and only best thing you can do to keep your 650 in good shape. Or any other engine. Now you know the secret and can do it yourself, we wise guys can't make a big deal out of knowing all about mechanicing and "maintaining the little beast". Proud of you. |

Parachuting leaves a few seriously negative options open,, [/quote] When I was in the army I took a parachute course to earn a little more money, had to do 8 jumps, I remember asking my instructor, Sir, how much time do I have to open my secondary chute if my main chute doesn't open, He said "Soldier you have the rest of your life" I'm kidding, I'm not stupid. |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by Fuschia on 12/17/10 at 05:12:45 congratulations Kim! I confess I've never changed my oil or even put gas in my bike myself! That's why I married a mechanic! |
Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by babyhog on 12/17/10 at 05:31:32 LOL Fuschia! ;D Kim - great job! Hubby would do mine too, but he is more of a procrastinator, so I think if you can do it, I should be able to also. I'm gonna do it before spring! (we got several inches of snow yesterday, nasty!) ;) |

Title: Re: My very first oil change Post by kimchris1 on 12/17/10 at 08:55:44 Thank you everyone for the nice pats on the back. It really gives one a great feeling when realizing you take on a challenge and acheive it. Piglet, go for it gal. If you don't at least attempt to do this, you will never know if you can. I have faith in you. I figured if I got stuck along the way, I could have come here and asked the forum. Or had the hubby finish when he got home. I feel good that I didn't have to do either one. Fushia, their is nothing wrong in your hubby doing all your maintance and fillups. That leaves you with nothing having to do but ride your bike. Thanks again to the technical section and all of you that contribute to that section of the forum. Genie enjoyed her bubble bath, then I tucked her under her cover and hope to ride today. :) kim |
