Title: Re: Merry Mithmas?... Post by PerrydaSavage on 12/25/10 at 12:45:06 Reminds of that classic Star Trek episode, Bread and Circuses, where the Enterprise winds up at a planet where the predominate culture is Classic Roman, though technologically advanced to roughly 20th Century Earth. This culture still retains gladitorial contests, typical Roman brutality and even the persecution of a group of folk McCoy mistakes for "Christians" because they worship the "Son" ... but it wasn't the Son of God they worship as the Crew later discovers, but rather The Sun ... I know, I know ... I'm a geek ... ::) |

Title: Re: Merry Mithmas?... Post by drharveys on 12/29/10 at 15:45:22 And in Mexico, Our Lady of Guadalupe may well be an update of the Aztec goddess Tonantzin. "...Tepeyac was also dedicated to the Mesoamerican mother goddess Tonantzin, and these pre-Christian Aztec associations parallel the Catholic version." Sort of like taking the pagan Yuletide evergreen and making it a Christmas tree. ___________________________ Read more at Suite101: Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Aztec Influence http://www.suite101.com/content/our-lady-of-guadalupe-and-the-aztec-influence-a316218#ixzz19XzSqjm4 |

Title: Re: Merry Mithmas?... Post by drharveys on 12/30/10 at 10:49:11 Yeah, the early (first to third century) Christians adopted the Roman solstice celebrations for Christmas so they could "stay under the radar" of the authorities. After the Romans adopted Christianity as their official religion, it spread into Gaul (then defined as Europe north of Italy) and they co-opted the Yule symbols, giving them Christian meanings and associations. Sort of their way of not re-inventing the wheel and letting the folks keep their favorite celebrations. |
