Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by PerrydaSavage on 01/13/11 at 03:44:59 YES!! I love the look of that Bike!! What displacement? I'm sure the saddle on that would be too tall for a short-arse like me though ... EDIT: Doh!!! just noticed it's a 125 ... that in a 450 would be AWESOME! |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by Driller on 01/13/11 at 05:58:52 That looks like it could be a heap of fun. All of the KTM Motards are very cool. 8-) |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by Paladin. on 01/13/11 at 10:50:39 They have a lot of small motorcycles in England, such as the Suzuki DR125SM: http://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/bike/dr125smsml0/ They will not be selling it in North America. They will not sell city motorcycles. IF you want small, you can only have scooters. |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by Serowbot on 01/13/11 at 10:56:07 With gas prices predicted to go over $5.00 a gallon, companies may rethink that policy... 80+ mpg might be a strong selling point... |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by Midnightrider on 01/13/11 at 11:10:24 Right on Bot, Aprillia is coming out with a 125cc 4 stroke sportbike scheduled to release this fall, of course Honda's 250 sportbike is scheduled for its release in the next couple of months. I've swore up and down I'm not gonna buy another bike for a while but when KTM releases the Duke in a 250 model, oh well I hope my feet cant touch the ground. ::) Everyone on this website knows what the major manufacturers are finally figuring out, you can have a barrel of economical fun with 30HP. |
Title: NOT a Little Thumper Post by Paladin. on 01/13/11 at 16:05:11 http://members.cox.net/geetumor/pic_03.jpg http://members.cox.net/geetumor/index_pic03.html I had a '67 Yamaha Twinjet -- parallel, two cylinders, two strokes, two mufflers, two coils, two carburetors, 100cc. That little toy had 9.5 bhp and could do 65 mph on the freeway. 125cc is all you need in the city. |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by MMRanch on 01/13/11 at 22:08:08 Hay Paladin I had one of those Twin Jet 100's (blue and chrome) laying flat accross the top of it on the interstate it would allmost do 80 mph and still wheele first gear with just a whip of the throdle. Great little bike that was my second bike , a big jump-up from a Honda 65cc that topped out at 56mph., ofcourse the 65 got over 100 mpg. nice to see a picture of one again.! Anybody been looking at the "BadAss" 125cc , I found an article of two guys taking one coast to coast. Looks like a nice toy. 8-) |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by Midnightrider on 01/14/11 at 08:28:19 I read the cross country article. I've always wanted a 650 Duke but visions of being laid up in a body cast prevented me from buying one. I was serious when I said I hope my feet dont touch the ground when KTM comes out with the 250 Duke. Maybe my saving grace is the local KTM dealer went out of business. The motorcycle companys have been building the small fun bikes for the Europeans for years. Its great that they are beginning to realise that some of us over here might enjoy them too. Speaking of badass 125's, this one will be available this fall!!!!!!http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo2/mwshelton/RS125_replica_2010_cust_cropped_605x469.jpg |

I think the problem with small bikes in the US is the freeway problem, jump on a freeway and giver her all she's got and there are very few 125s can get up there, a good 250 could but you would kill it very shortly,Lets face our beloved Savage has a hard time on freeways, In Iowa,Utah, and Wyoming the speed limit is 75mph ,200 miles at that speed and the savage would give up the ghost. My 250 ninja could do 98mph .,I did get a ton out of her down hill, but even at 75 she was screaming pretty good , I forgot what the actual rpm was at 75 ,enough to wear the engine out in short order. But still the best fun I ever had on a motorcycle. I sure miss it. |
Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by Serowbot on 01/14/11 at 22:29:24 ... speed limits 75mph on the interstates here too... I was thrashin' my little girl on there just this afternoon... ... but, I think it's harder on me, than her... I hate that cold windblast... Seroweeniebot... (told ya' I was a weenie?)... Maybe,... Slowbot?... |

Title: Re: Sharpest Little Thumper I've Ever Seen Post by mpescatori on 01/17/11 at 05:39:51 KTM has been making road-legal bikes ever since they opened, so I'm sorry to say that magazine article is a little short sighted. Here's a 1970's example http://digilander.libero.it/massimo254/MOTO/Ktm125-75regd.jpg This bike would give anything between 24 hp (early '70s) and 32-34 hp in its heyday) Notice the size of the cooling fins on the cylinder !!! :o As for the "modern" Duke; it's a 125cc alright, designed in Austria but assembled ni India with the engine courtesy of Bajaj, of whom KTM are prime shareholders. The other major shareholder is Piaggio, so guess what ? Bajaj also make the Vespa 8-) The KTM Duke is designed for a 250 cc engine, but it was marketed with the 125 cc plant first because 125cc is the legal max fior the 16-18 y.o. age window. No car for Tommy in High School, you want wheels? 125cc is the max you get. So 1255cc is a very agressive market, where anybody and everybody want a slice of the cake. That's why in Europe the most sophisticated designs come in the smaller packages. http://www.nextmoto.it/img/KTM_125Duke.jpg :) |
