members live around this area, so heads up and keep safe.

16-17 April 2011

In a 24 hour period there were more than 100 reported tornadoes
and multiple deaths due to the powerful storms that swept through
the South Friday into Saturday, making it the deadliest storm so far
this season.

The severe weather stretched from Missouri and Illinois in the
North to Mississippi and Georgia in the South.

So far, the severe weather is blamed for several reported
deaths; 2 in Oklahoma, 7 in Arkansas, 7 in Alabama and 4 in
North Carolina. Many injuries were also reported.

Aftermath videos look BAD (jeez, it looks just like japan!).

Please check-in guys and post news, updates, pics, vids, tips, shelter info etc.

"Skipping" tornado (touch down, go up, touch down, go up) went through Fayetteville NC destroying homes and raking through neighborhoods in little short segments.

Sucker went within a quarter mile of my house .... where my wife was sleepin (I was at work about 5 miles away)

North Ga checkin' in. :) Last week I think we got a good bit of it ended up killing 8 people in one night. Otherwise no catastrophic pictures to share or anything. Since that incident it has really just been some pretty severe thunderstorms causing some havoc.

I'm pretty sure the weather took out our systems for the intersection lights where I am. For the past two weeks I get off work late at night and the whole cities intersection lights are blinking red. The sad part is everyone is an idiot and refuses to stop, causing some pretty nasty accidents about every other night it seems now.

Beaufort County escaped relatively unhurt, I think there were a few powerlines down, nothign major that I heard of. A couple of counties over in a couple of directions, things were not so good. I had thought about OF, glad he is OK.

& homes almost unscathed sitting so close to others that are destroyed, smashed to nothing. amazing. Terrifying stuff those darn tornadoes.

north central NC ok - My son is a Marine in Jacksonville - he lives about 15 miles from there - no damage at his house but he said there was a tornado on base.

Amazing the strange damage they can do. We get hit in KY quite often. So far I have been very lucky, been hit all around me but my neighborhhod has always been spared. Very scary stuff!!!

Seeing the damage they do makes me want a "Root Cellar" all the more.
When I was a little kid we went up the road to the neighbors storm cellar when the weather got wild. 5 adults & 2 kids down in that tiny cellar was kinda packed, but the inconvenience was nothing compared to being "up there" with the weather. Thankfully, neither of our farms were ever hit.

We're moving some dirt & excavating where we mite put a goat pen. IF thats how it works out, they may have to be ready to Scoot Over a ways & let us huddle up in there with them if the weather gets too crazy.

Thatd be ideal, but I dont see that happnin in such a small place. We are gonna have to go outside to have a safe place..Id rather it be closer to the house than Up a hill to a goat pen,, Ill just have to keep working & see how it shakes out,

THE SOUTH, the most religious part of the U.S.A. One would think all places to be spared the south would get top billing.
How about all gathering at your local church,that should be safe.
Ooops thats no good ,I mean praying to the guy that could have stopped it in the first place, is not very smart.

Gotta say I'm with Mike on this one. C'mon Mick, if you don't feel bad for these people and don't want to "pray" for them, that's your perrogative, but don't be a downer when we have folks to be concerned about.

I hope everyone is ok and stays ok. I checked on a friend of mine in Garner, NC this morning. Her hubby and family are fine, although there was alot of damage around her. We had and are having some pretty rough storms in my area too, thankfully no confirmed twisters yet. Spent 3 days last week without electric at home, but had it at work (wish it had been the other way around!)

My thoughts and prayers are for us all.

Like you guys I feel just as bad as you do about people being hurt or killed, I feel terrable for the people of Japan as well.
It just annoys me to see you (or hear you) pray to the god that caused it in the first place,and being omnipotent could have stopped it.
So please tell me why you do, And please none of the old
"God works in mysteriuos ways".

As for me I just hope with all my heart that not to many people get hurt,or killed.

To get back on topic: I have sympathy and well wishes for those who have been affected by these tornadoes. In 1984 a "skipping" tornado hit our condominium complex while skipping through the neighborhood. It completely demolished one block of row houses and severely damaged some others. It did some amazing things. It stripped off every single shingle and half of the aluminum siding. We had a shingle pushed half way through our back door, just as if a saw had cut a slit through the door and the shingle had been inserted there. A piece of aluminum siding was pushed 4' into the ground and was perfectly straight when we pulled it out. Twigs and sticks were pushed into trees as if a hole had been drilled first. Most of the windows in a 5 bock radius were broken, including every single window in a large apartment complex behind us. They were getting glass from as far away as Florida to replace it as there wasn't enough in eastern Canada. Trucks were flipped over. Those roofs that weren't destroyed outright were picked up , shifted about 6" and set down. This happened on the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend. On the Sunday some Mennonite representatives came and offered to have 100 people on site on Monday to help us rebuild free of charge! Our insurance broker turned them down, as they were not insured contractors. At that time we were the only condo in London that had tornado insurance. One person was injured (not seriously) when a wall fell on her.
And Mick: as much as we respect your opinion on religion we are getting tired of your song and dance every time someone says "pray for", whether we believe in God or not.

One tornadoe can wreck havoc on a town,
yet for so many at one time to touch down
is almost unbelieveable. Yet it did happen.
Piglet I was worried about you gal and was
so nice to talk with you on the phone and
know you and yours survived those nasty
storms.
It allways amazes me how they touch down
and then spring back up. Hit one house and
not even touch another on the same block or
side of the street.

Spent much of this evening in the basement -- every time the sirens went off. Oh well, cleaned up a few things, organized some of the tools and braced some shelving units that were starting to lean forward.

Finally took the portable DVD player down with me and started watching "The Bicycle Thief", an old Italian movie w/subtitles.

My place is OK, probably be some downed tree limbs in our neighborhood, but the airport got kinda trashed.

Alas, the rest of the weekend forecast is for more thunderstorms! :'(

Glad you are OK in St Louis. watched the video of the airport. Scary. Our sirens went off this evening here in central Ky.
Several funnels were spotted but none touched down thank God, yes I said THANK GOD!!!!

Central KY got hit again!! a few miles from work last night. We shut down and sent everyone home after round one, got home just in time to get hit by round 2. Needless to say me and the dog spent the night in the basement. I've been blessed, getting hit all around me, Caneyville, Leitchfield, Big Clifty, Boston, Toniville and Hardin County fairgrounds. I hope this is a week that never gets repeated!!!!!!

Tuscaloosa Alabama got hit hard, the tornado is reported to have been a mile wide, on the ground.

Versy, My B in-law just built a new house with a safe room. It is, as you say, basically a hardened room, but kinda like the space shuttle is a big glider. I saw a piece on the Weather Channel about them. Some withstand fire, wind, earthquakes, just depends on what you need. I have a friend from Ca who says we are crazy to live here. She prefers the earthquakes--if she has a choice. ;D I have been putting off getting a "Storm House", but I am now actively looking. The little 4 person fiberglass in-ground ones would work for me. $3000 installed. I'll be asking for donations later. ;D

Versy, I did see a video today of a guy with a trap door by his bed that went into a 4' culvert buried vertically about 6' tall. He lived in a mobile home. Kinda like the trash can idea, 'cause the mobile home is sure to leave. Having a "bug out" kit is a good idea.

Unless I misunderstood my weather people said we have more tornados this season than the last ten years all together. And May is supposed to be the big month in the South. :(
