Title: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Serowbot on 04/25/11 at 19:50:33 Soooo,... I was cleaning my sink today and I punched my knuckle through the bowl,... honest!... It's one of those Plasticy pre-fab Home Depot kinda' units with the bowl and counter all in one... about 3 years old.... Musta' been a bubble, weak spot in the pour... Anyway,... What do you think I should patch it with?... Does JB Weld come in eggshell white?... :-?... Any ideas?... it's a pretty tiny hole... :-/... http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/puink003.jpg?t=1303785798 |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by mick on 04/25/11 at 19:53:51 fiber-glass patch. |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/25/11 at 20:31:33 If you can get to that from behind, then maybe Mick has it spot on. A litl sanding & some fiberglass epoxy on it, a bit O glass & more juice,, 2 o 3 layers O that, & let it set up. Surely F/glass epoxy wouldnt attack a plastic?? Try it in a small spot? Anyway, once you solve the "knuckle Dragging" problem, you can get a bit of paint in there.. |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Serowbot on 04/25/11 at 22:43:10 Can't get to the backside or fiberglass might be the ticket,... seems like a two finger size space behind a fingernail size hole... I'm leaning towards JB Weld,... just wish it was white... ...paint never holds in water. ... caulking always shrinks up with time... Life deals up the weirdest pickles... Amongst all the crap of life,... this one is a new one on me... :-?... |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by justin_o_guy2 on 04/26/11 at 00:40:39 I was hunting a fix for you & found this. Hey, Ive seen this , but just accepted it.. ahhh, science,, http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/10/kitchen-sink-white-hole/ Oh, & BTW, youre gonna be able to make a patch hold a lot better if you can find a way to get something to fill that gap & if you can "wet" the surface behind that hole some. Epoxies, hard as they are, are still stronger when theyre bonding things together, so, maybe you can find a good, strong epoxy & blend some plastic powder into it, or just accept an off color spot, which is probably what Id do. How thick is the sink wall there? It looks like its about as thick as paint,, How high up the basin is it? |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by LostArtist on 04/26/11 at 04:23:59 bubble gum or duct tape? that's my DYI skills right there ;) |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Boule’tard on 04/26/11 at 06:27:58 There's this "plastic weld" stuff, a 2-part epoxy, that comes in about the same yellowish off-white as your sink.. there may be some at Autozone. The hole can be backed up with aluminum foil, then fill, sand, cuss, replace sink. That's what I'd do. :D |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by splash07 on 04/26/11 at 07:01:04 New sink that isn't paper thin would be my first thought. |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by babyhog on 04/26/11 at 07:07:26 This a bathroom sink? Whereabouts on the sink is the damage? How much trouble is it gonna cause? I'd stuff something in the hole, then a piece of that wallpaper joint mesh for something to grab onto, and cover it with some good waterproof caulk (which can be found in many colors), smooth it out real nice a perty, and be done with it until I was ready to replace the whole sink/unit. And don't clean it so hard next time... :D |

Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by arteacher on 04/26/11 at 08:40:12 If the hole is over the overflow drain channel cast into the sink, it won't matter if your repair leaks. If it was me I would tap GENTLY around the whole sink with a small ball peen hammer to see if there are other weak areas before I would bother to repair. If you are really set on keeping the "marble" top you can cut this stuff with a jigsaw and a fine toothed blade. Buy a cheap metal sink, tape the template to the top, and cut it out, then install the new sink. You will never be able to make an invisible repair, but if that doesn't matter to you then I would bevel the edge and use epoxy putty, sand it smooth, paint it with lacquer, and the "glaze" it with clear epoxy. You will still see it, and it will bug the h#ll out of you, because you will know where it is. ;D ;D |

Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Serowbot on 04/26/11 at 10:06:53 I'll be darned... JB Weld does come in white... I think I'll try it... available at auto parts stores for some bizarre reason... I think it's what Boule'tard was referring too.. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51d2q6kvrgL._SL500_AA300_.jpg |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Boule’tard on 04/26/11 at 13:10:21 I was thinkin this stuff: http://www.permatex.com/images/DisplayImage.asp?210|/images/ProductPhotos/84115.jpg But whichever you find first, is best. ;) |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Ed L. on 04/26/11 at 15:58:10 I used to use a epoxy called Marine Tex, the stuff was hard as a rock, water proof and came in off white. Don't know if they make it any more. To fill that hole try packing it with a little paper, put some epoxy in the hole to act as a backing then do a second layer to finish and smooth the patch. |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Boofer on 04/26/11 at 17:01:31 Serow, I used the white JB Weld. It sets up pretty fast, so don't panic or you'll have a bump to clean around. And you'd better be really careful in the shower if it came from the same place. ;D ;D |

Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by runwyrlph on 04/27/11 at 15:42:23 don't know if you're already done with your repair .... this is a trick my aunt uses for fixing holes in drywall when her crummy tenants stick a brook handle or knife or something thru the wall - gives you a "back" to putty onto: get a little piece of cardboard or something that's a little wider than the hole, make 2 small holes in it, thread a string/wire/fishing line thru small holes, fold the cardboard to get it inside the hole, then unfold so it won't fit back out, little goop around the edges on the BACK of the hole, pull it tight with the string, let it dry a little, then goop over from your side, cut off the string flush, smooth up and bob's yer uncle! obviously you'r not using spackle, but the principle might still apply! |
Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Boule’tard on 04/27/11 at 16:16:22 WILL Serowbot fix the sink?? WHICH method will he use to fix it?? WILL the repair stand up to vigorous cleanings and wayward knuckles?? WILL Serowbot post the repair procedure and results in the tech section? Uhg, what a cliffhanger.. I'm just DYING to know!! ;D |

Title: Re: Needing some DIY advice... Post by Boule’tard on 04/27/11 at 19:37:47 Lesser men read about alternative sink repair on the internet, but you're LIVING it man, livin' the dream. ;D Well you could always go on the cutting edge and try the JB weld waterproof epoxy.. good God man, you may not even have to drain the sink! I dunno.. might be too extreme.. You game? :-? |
