Title: Front brakes replaced..
Post by kimchris1 on 06/02/11 at 13:59:20

Today with some much needed guidance
and help from Serowbot, I did my front
brakes..
Serowbot gave me some great suggestios
and once I got the 2, 17mm bolts off and
went and bought a C-clamp, it went very
easy.
I can't wait to show the Mr. why I decided to
change them..
I had almost no groove left on the stock ones.
The old ones look pretty nasty.
So now I have done my own oil and filter change
and front brakes. I am becoming one with my bike.
Now I will be ready to take Skat for many thousands
miles of rides...
Thank you again Serowbot for the help..

Thanks guys.. It means alot to get the pats on the back
from all of you.. :-*
Vers, only 10,000 more to go? Wow guess it is good I
enjoy learning as well as wrenching.
Hubby came home, had already went and checked Genie out,
came in and asked to see the old brakes.
He was amazed that the old ones were so worn.

Glad I had decided to go ahead and do these when I
heard the metal grinding sound last Sun on our way home.
Lucky for me it was the last couple miles from home when
she started making the noise, as I pressed on the brakes.

I want to also thank all of you that have placed topics in the
tech section. Without the how to's and pics, I would never
have attempted to try this by myself. Well almost by self, again
serowbot helped me thru a couple rough spots.
Hugs to all..  :-* kim

Way to go! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  The stock ones on mine wore out about that same mileage too, if I remember right.

Great job! Common sense and doing your own repairs is what sets the riders apart from the "lemmings" out there that just don't get it! Can't beat that sense of confidence it brings!

congrats!

The stock pads must be extra soft? I had to replace them on my '07 to pass inspection in '08.

I haven't had to change them since - just passed inspection again yesterday.  Hmm maybe I should be slowing down more often?    ;D

What did you use the C-clamp for?

I could tell ya', Bill... but, then I'd have to kill ya'...

What the heck,...
It's to compress the piston cup, so the new pads will go over the disc...
;)...

Just but a flat screw driver in there and turn slowly and it opens right up.

You must have got something other than the organic pads at Bent... There are THREE different series of brake pads with the same number, and 2 sets of them are too thick. I found that one out the hard way, courtesy of Emgo saying the thickest fit the Savage (wrong, the thinnest fit it).

Stock pads are alright. Savages have extra hard rotors though. Short pad service life regardless of what you use.

I usually just crack the bleeder screw open and push the piston in. Yes, I tie the brake lever back first.

I got the EBC's and their working great.
I tried using a wrench like the one shown
in the "how to" section and could not get
it to work. The C-clamp did the job in a
matter of a min..
Now that I have done it, and have all the
right tools, next time should be easier.
I feel good knowing I didn't have to pay
anyone else or wait till hubby could get
around to doing it. Especially when I
saw how bad the stock ones were worn..
With the weather turning nice, I am now
able to go and enjoy.. In fact took a lil
ride today.. Brakes work great and sure
noticed the differene right away.. :) kim

I like 4 " C-Clamp Vise grips for brake jobs.

I've changed out my front brakes twice already, and the C-clamp really helped. and the help from the Tech section WITH PICTURES was the best - i did it myself too!
At some point i need to do the back brake pads too, but have been putting it off as too much of a project right now. Pic of how badly my front pads were worn. I am in stop-go local traffic daily, so i was not too surprised.

Skat, those look identical to the ones
I took off of Genie.
BTW, it was your post of doing yours
by yoursef, that inspired me as well.
Thank you. :) kim
