Title: How do you refuel? Post by runwyrlph on 06/08/11 at 17:20:14 One of the other threads was talking about getting off to fill up due to danger of spilling, fire, etc. I have almost always stayed in the saddle, allows you to hold the bike up straight, fit more petrol in the tank. Never really thought about a fire starting. Off a hot exhaust pipe? was the guy smoking too? |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by KristenAnn on 06/08/11 at 17:30:29 If ihave to go in the store to pay and get water or anything else i end up off the bike to fill. If i am all set to go I do a drivethru and pay at the pump sitting in the bike. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by Boofer on 06/08/11 at 18:36:19 If you have ever spilled gas on your thighs and had to ride home you probably get off the bike. I learned that when I was around 12 yrs old. Funny I just told my daughter about gas blistering my leg yesterday when she filled up her atv. :) |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by Serowbot on 06/08/11 at 19:27:59 I like to live dangerous,... plus, I'm lazy... If my bike ever caught fire,... I'd throw my body over it to save it, anyway....;D... |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by 2whlthrpy on 06/08/11 at 19:45:05 I need option 4. Always get off the seat but not for safety. Dont know why, just always have. :o |

But the filler is on the high side when the bike is on the side stand. Seems like one could get more gas in that way. As for me, I get off the bike, take off my gloves and helmet, dig out my wallet, swipe the debit card, select the grade, then lean over the bike to watch the gas level rise so I don't overfill. Then I tap the nozzle on the spout so nothing drips. Then I do a quick walk-around of the bike. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by Trippah on 06/08/11 at 20:16:22 My wife tells me the smell of gasoline on important body parts is NOT a turn on; I take her word on such issues. :D |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/08/11 at 20:25:57 I stand over the seat, holding the bike upright,. & letting the sun shine in if possible, I stop filling & look & add till I get to the bottom of th tube. I have held the nozzle in & slipped it up till I fund the bottom of the tube, but thats a bit scary. Id rather spend the time & make sure I dont overfil or spill. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by thumperclone on 06/08/11 at 20:36:55 i keep the bike level so i dont over fill and then leak at the next right turn... |

Take a milk bottle and fill it up right and then try in on and angle see which one you get the most water in. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by prechermike on 06/09/11 at 02:41:24 I usually stay on the bike, stand up over the seat, as Justin and try to get the light just right. Like KritenAnn, if I have to go in and pay or whatever I have to get off anyway. I have never had an issue with filling up and missing or overfilling. Only once or twice did the gas burp out of the tank when I straightened her up. I am not sure what happened then, I had not done anything any different. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by weracerc on 06/09/11 at 05:13:20 off - left side between bike & pump - arthritis in hands makes it easier to do it that way for me - plus if there were a spill and or fire i have an easy out close to the pump shut off button (kills the pumps on that island. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by babyhog on 06/09/11 at 05:30:08 I have re-fueled a time or two while staying on the bike, but 99.9% of the time I stay off. Since the one time I got fuel spewed down my right leg, I always stand the bike up slowly, and pay better attention on the first few hard turns... Actually, I usually let hubby pump the gas ;) |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by Gyrobob on 06/09/11 at 05:42:42 - Get off - Convince the pump to give me gas - Fill the tank while looking down into it - When full - pull the nozzle almost all the way out and delay there for a few seconds to wait for the gas to stop dripping - Turn the nozzle up like a waiter does with a wine bottle (to make sure nothing drips on my precious paint job) - Park the nozzle. Sometimes I remove helmet/gloves/earplugs, etc. -- depends on how much of a break I need. I never fill up while sitting on the bike. Filling with gas in a busy gas station has too many possibilities for unexpected/unsafe/unfriendly events: -- dopey drivers (I want to be able to dodge them rapidly) -- gas problems (I don't want gas on my junk) -- bad people (I want rapid access to the pocketed 9mm) |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by Ed L. on 06/09/11 at 14:58:55 I just run the gas into the tank till it starts splashing out. To check to see how much more I can dump in I'll light a match and hold it over the filler. When the tank catches fire I slap the cap back on and throw my leather jacket over the entire thing. By then the fire department shows up and hoses the bike off. I end up with a fillup and a bike wash that way. ;D ;D ;D Most time I get off the bike and walk around before a fillup unless the bike is on fire then I run around flapping my leather. |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by kimchris1 on 06/09/11 at 15:03:18 I have always gotten off my bike. I usually stand on the outside of the bike, in case some idiot hits the gas pedal instead fo the break. I don't want to get pinned between the bike and the pump.. Other than that like most, I watch as it is filling and then hold till no drip, turn upside down and replace on the pump. I usually take my gloves off, lift the shield on the helmet, stretch the back.. etc, etc.. This also gives the guys a chance to give Genie a good look over. :) kim |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by scroop on 06/09/11 at 17:09:20 I keep 2 five gallon gas jugs in the shed and fill the machine at home to save the hassle of refueling on the road. When I do fuel up elsewhere I always stay on the bike. Nothing helps though - I always spill gas on the tank. You should see me when I paint or glue! :P |

darn - my bike needs washed - why didnt I think of this!?? ;D ;D I get off the bike, set the gas cap and key on top of the pump, watch the fuel filling so it doesnt spill...and still end up with some hissing and leakage on really hot days, even when i dont 'top off'. I've learned to carry a cloth or napkin wipe with me to get the fuel off the tank. And I've learned to pull the sheepskin back before fueling....ask me how gasoline soaked sheep wool smells... :P ;) |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by MMRanch on 06/09/11 at 20:14:19 Option #4 I need option 4. Always get off the seat but not for safety Get off , loose gloves and helmet , dig for card , Only fill it to bottom of filler sleve , (have had gas come out while driving away too many times) Call me cheep but : I turn the pump off by reaching into the slot where the nosle goes and push-up the flapper. Then get that extra little bit of gas that is presurized in the hose. then do the wine glass thing to make sure I get a "no drip exit" but I carry a piece of cloth between the handlebar and the triple-tree just in case there's a mess . "Cain't have my baby going around with a mess on her tank" ! :) |
Title: Re: How do you refuel? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/09/11 at 21:05:20 Then get that extra little bit of gas that is presurized in the hose. & the next guy who gets gas there watches the pump ring up a dimes worth before he gets a drop.. |
