Title: How do you wave? Post by Z on 06/10/11 at 14:04:59 We were out on the bike today and while waving I started to wonder. Do any of the returned waves have a meaning? Are they just the rider's personal preference? I wave with a peace sign out straight out to the left. One quick movement. I don't wave my hand around or anything. I guess mine is more of a salute than a wave. What about you? How do you wave? |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by arteacher on 06/10/11 at 14:29:04 If I can't wave because I'm doing something with my left hand like shifting, I nod to the other motorcyclist. When I can wave I hold my hand out under the height of the bar (so no one will mistake it for a hand signal) with my thumb and first two fingers partly extended, so there is less drag in the slipstream. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Smokestack on 06/10/11 at 14:40:42 I throw the horns, but I'm an idiot.... \m/ |

Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by ALfromN.H. on 06/10/11 at 15:34:14 I use a two finger wave, sometimes a one finger wave. |

Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by T2 on 06/10/11 at 16:21:14 I see dozens of variations of the wave. The only one that bothers me is when the other rider uses their index finger to point directly at me, then moves the finger to point at the curb. I think it means "pull over" or something like that. I always smile and wave back. ::) Terry |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by MotoBuddha on 06/10/11 at 16:22:23 I lift my hand straight up from the grip, palm forward, fingers relaxed. It means less time off the bar. What bugs me is that some people insist there's only one correct way to wave. When did riding become about conformity? |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Z on 06/10/11 at 17:12:38 I have seen lots of different waves too. I've seen fist pumps, things that really look like some kind of code, plain old "hi" waves, pageant waves, two fingers up, two fingers down, two to the sides, the horns, I've had actual salutes (like military salutes), pistol shots, pointing, all kinds of stuff. I have never considered that people think there is only one "correct" way to wave. :-? I always nod if I am not in a position to wave as well. I love to see all the different waves. Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Starlifter on 06/10/11 at 18:20:21 I do left hand two fingers pointing down at a 45 degree angel. It seems to be the custom in my area....Come to think of it, that's the only wave I have ever seen around here. An observation; any bike with two up the pilion passenger always gives a wave. Good idea for safty, and the second is girrls always wave no matter who what or where they are. :) |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/10/11 at 18:56:49 I usually keep my hands on the bars & raise my left forefinger. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Dj12midnit on 06/10/11 at 21:42:04 All depends on the situation. some times I wave with both hands. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by SavRon on 06/11/11 at 05:33:11 I just give everyone the 2 finger thumb wave. Down below the bar about a 45 degree angle. I've gotten waves from all types, Harley;s, Honda's, etc...except for the ones on the crotch rockets. Their to busy hunched over in the fetal position attempting to triple the speed limit. Oh well,,,I wave, whether I get one in return or not. :) |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by KristenAnn on 06/11/11 at 06:40:21 When it is safe it drop my hand off the throttle and use the whole hand or if not safe i give a nod. I find around here that everyone waves no matter what they are riding. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by thumperclone on 06/11/11 at 07:32:31 index finger down = rubber side down knuckle touch sometimes at a stop light.. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by kimchris1 on 06/11/11 at 07:46:56 Majority of time, peace sign down by my left leg.. Sometimes arm extended above head. Then their is the fingers off the bar with hand still intack on the bar. Tip of the helmet if going thru intersection and another bike is wating at the light. Again all depends on the situations and whether I feel safe or have time. I won't put myself or Genie in danger just to wave. I do wave as often as I can. I miss some yet is not on purpose. Harley gals here, if two up with bf's will wave, by selves most time not. :) kim |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by 23Skidoo on 06/11/11 at 08:08:52 Obviously riding on the left in the UK it's not pratical to wave so most people nod or I may peace sign whilst still holding throttle if passing a group.. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by joscswny on 06/11/11 at 12:48:57 I'm tryn' em all. Haven't made up my mind yet. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/11/11 at 13:56:17 Im thinkin I mite put a button on the h/bar & a relay & a solenoid to raise an arm with hand shootin a peace sign, with a pretty stout spring in it, so itll wave around.. mite get me a second "hand" to put on it, with only 1/2 a peace sign, for special moments. |

Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/11/11 at 14:22:44 Clever & funny, & doing it better would be a ridiculous waste of time.. |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by WD on 06/11/11 at 14:29:04 Depends on my mood. Usually down and to the left or a simple raising of the fingers. Apehangers do require some extra attention, even when you've rolled with them for years. Ditto my modified (front heavy) suspension. You are more likely to get a wave from me if you are: A Female, B in a half or 3/4 shell, C riding a bike you obviously built yourself. And of course, the cute little hardbellies in tank tops on the back of a crotch rocket I tend to blow a kiss, or at least leer at. I AM a dirty old man after all. ;) |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by weracerc on 06/12/11 at 08:05:33 head nod when i cant let go of the bars - drop 2 to the left casually when i can let go - If i know the other rider i will raise 2 while holding the bar if i am not shifting.........passing a large group might call for combinations of all of the above......there is one (older) guy i pass every morning - he is on a GW and he never acknowledges any of my attempts to be friendly....i quit trying several months ago - then one day i saw he had two up and I though ok now he is getting with the program wonder what changed his mind? |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by kimchris1 on 06/12/11 at 10:28:25 Weracerc, that is how an older gentlemen was with me too.. Hmm something with age you think? lol... I would see him in the early mornings on my way home from work. Well used to as used to work nights. Anyways, he looked like a Ewok from Starwars on his bike. Big burly, hairy.. I would wave and he never waved back. I would say to myself, grumpy old man.. lolol.. Well one morning, he surprised the heck out of me, he waved back!!! I smiled and figured Grumpy, went thru the change of life.. ;D ;D kim |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Boofer on 06/12/11 at 17:39:30 I usually just extend my left arm as if I'm going to scoop up a volleyball but without the leaning over part. If they wave, fine--if not, fine. :) |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Sunchasers on 06/13/11 at 09:18:37 Standard two finger wave, left hand. Now if the other rider is a Scouter (Boy Scout Leader ), three fingers with the thumb and pinkie touching... ;D |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by WD on 06/13/11 at 17:24:13 I used to ride to Troop and Venture crew meetings on my Vulcan, in uniform, including Order of the Arrow sash. I was the strangest Assistant Scoutmaster they had (a judge, a sheriff's dept water rescue diver, a couple soldiers, and a long haired full bearded biker, among others). Change at the bike shop, throw on chaps and a vest and go. |

Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by Southpaw on 06/14/11 at 09:29:53 Heel of the palm kept on the grips, rotating the wrist to the "peace" sign down 45 dgrees for rubber side down. I wave at most everybody. First couple of bikes in a group. and +1 on kids on bikes. it seems to make their day! Wierdest wave I ever saw was an old dude on a Honda would always put his fist on the top of his left grip and "flick" a peace sign twice. You couldn't tell if he was waving, signalling a left turn or chasing flies... :-? |
Title: Re: How do you wave? Post by sneakyB on 06/14/11 at 17:01:11 whats the signal for "cop ahead, slow down"? |
