Title: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/25/11 at 16:53:33 Be careful what you ask for... 1841 Plantation manor house, front porch and pillars redone in the early 1960s... Small brick building is for wintering over tropical plants, floor is 6 feet under ground. Max likes the grass here, likes the clover even better. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/FarmHouseFront.jpg Rear of big house, east end. The big room by the carport contains a whirlpool and sauna. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/FarmHouseRearEast.jpg Kitchen area of big house, that pecan tree was planted around 1964. Swimming pool and summer house are just to the right and rear, no pics. Both need restoration. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/FarmHouseRearWest.jpg 1921 cattle barn, walnut and poplar siding over southern white oak timbers. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/BigBarn.jpg My house, was built for Lisa's grandmother. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/SmallHouseFront.jpg Central garden area, late 60s horse trailer, sailboat, some of the tractors. Grapes and berries between boat and tractors. 2 acre pond, 6 acre wheat/soybean field are just beyond the pecan trees (about 10 trees in). Trees are spaced on 60 foot centers. This open area will be turned into lease/rental garden beds, naturist friendly. Property goes back another 1/4 to 1/2 mile. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/Orchard.jpg Melon and squash bed. Smithy is behind the old white single wide, guest trailer is peeking out as well. 2-3 acres around the old trailer for farm stand, parking, couple firepits, may add a couple tent pads. http://ravenscroftart.net/jowens/GardenNorth.jpg Tried to get pics of the Bug that will be redone as a Skat project, looked great with natural light, flash made the barn interior go dark. Nothing fancy, just an orange slug bug covered in 5 years of dust. We're planning to start pool restoration this winter and pour a pad for a decent sized hot tub. West TN is severely lacking in true bike/naturist friendly venues. Beach style volleyball court will be by the pond, a small beach will be cleared, some pond dredging. And then we can start hosting official bike/classic cage get togethers. And other stuff. |

Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by jef.savage on 06/25/11 at 18:35:54 Really nice. It looks so relaxing. |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/25/11 at 19:43:24 Not during Cicada season. Or tree frog season. I'm 20 miles from Wal-mart, 30 plus miles outside of Memphis. Heck, the gas station is a few miles away. It can be relaxing, but right now it is too hot to do much most of the day. Fish don't bite when the pond is bath water warm either. Beauvoir (Jefferson Davis' last home) is bigger, but not by much... |

Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by kimchris1 on 06/26/11 at 07:36:09 WD.. I am envious as hell. Your new home looks like it was made for "Gone with the Wind." Which happens to be one of my all favorite movies.. Any time there is property like you have, it is alot of work to maintain. Once you get it under control it will be easier for you and Lisa to do so. Sounds like a nice place to work and relax all at the same time. I miss my country life. Save me a section, I may have to retire there.. ;) Great pics and thanks for sharing your "Tara" with us. I am indeed envious yet glad it is yours.. :) kim |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/26/11 at 09:11:20 Mine is the small house, Jack (Lisa's Dad) still lives in the manor house. The big clump by the chimney is a Celeste fig tree (or 3), absolutely loaded down right now. Kim, I know I sent you my address so you could get an aerial view... Suppose I could do a screen snap so the real size of the place is on display... once I figure out how to make the computer edit the pics. You guys have no idea how much work it needs. Have to be very careful though, there are only about 4 or 5 of the old "river homes" left around here, there used to be a dozen or better. Anyone of you is welcome to come by and check the place out. Next year it will be in a lot better shape, plan to spend fall, winter and early spring getting the orchards back under control. And the pool house re-screened, pool tiles repaired (and the turtle evicted), pool deck cleaned off (jungle). And there are 3 small boats accessible for the pond, a canoe a johnboat and a pirogue (Cajun canoe-johnboat hybrid). Lots of bbqs and smokers, plenty of white oak and pecan wood to go in them. Bring your own beer. |

Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by webhead on 06/27/11 at 14:14:38 Awesome man! Where's the ferris wheel and the roller coaster? Seriously though AwEsOmE! |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/27/11 at 16:54:26 Ferris wheel and roller coaster? Funny you should mention that, the Mid-South Fairgrounds got condemned and the amusement park was torn out. Lisa rode the old wooden coaster there, with Elvis when she was little (lead car). Her dad has the pics somewhere... If I could find them, pick them up cheap and get them transported, I'd put them in. What the heck, they have to end up somewhere... |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by scroop on 06/27/11 at 20:29:09 Where's the shooting range? Never mind, with all of that land I guess that it's whereever you point the gun. No worries from loud neighbors. How many generations has the place been in the family? How old is Max? Any other "pets" running around? |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/28/11 at 02:37:11 Jack and Shirley purchased the place in 1958. Some of her relatives owned it off and on since it was built. Property changed hands several times after the war. Max is either 11 or 13, can't remember for sure. Minis can live well into their 30s or 40s. Pets? 2 beagles, 5 cats between the 2 houses. When we lived here before we had a 6' copperhead that lived in the greenhouse. And there is a decent sized red eared slider pond turtle in the 50 year old swimming pool. |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by drharveys on 06/28/11 at 03:25:46 Wow! An old house that looks like even more work than mine! Super property -- enjoy! |

Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by mpnoffi on 06/28/11 at 20:07:26 Now that's what I'm talking about WD! That's like where I come from...the country! I live in a subdivision now, but I miss living way out. Looking forward to coming to see the place...I'll bring the PBR! |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/29/11 at 03:11:09 The pond is stocked with bluegills, crappie (both kinds), bass, catfish and silver carp. If you bring your son he's welcome to drown a few worms or crickets. Cane pole works better than fancy gear for some reason. He might even catch himself a pet turtle. Ed, beehives are going in next year, need to decide what style and how many. |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/29/11 at 03:29:34 Ahh, BEES IM wanting to do that, too. |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by Ed L. on 06/29/11 at 12:42:30 WD and JAOG go ahead and ask me about bees, I've been a hobby bee keeper since '91, and have 5 hives which bring in around 40 gallons of honey a year. Can't even remember what refined sugar tastes like. |

Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by WD on 06/29/11 at 14:58:30 I don't like honey, but the bumblebees and other native bees aren't doing a sufficient job pollinating. I think I've seen a whole 3 honeybees this year, usually saw hundreds a day when we lived here 10 years ago. Have to add a few active flowerbeds I guess. No biggie, Lisa wants a lot of era correct flowers anyway. |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/29/11 at 15:04:43 I sure hope you put a hive or 2 out,, we need the bees,, Many have died, I blame the GMO crops. |
Title: Re: You guys wanted farm pics... HUGE thread... Post by Ed L. on 06/29/11 at 16:25:04 Here's a link to one of the bee web pages I hang out at. http://www.beesource.com/forums/index.php They are good people and can give you a lot of advice. Just expect to pick up a few stings ;) |
