Title: Best oil for car
Post by rl153 on 08/09/12 at 12:14:30

I have an 88 Buick century 2.8 v6 and a 95 buick regal 3.8 v6. Does any one know what kind of cams are in these motors? I use valvoline ,but apparently some car oil may be inadequate, for the older cams. What oil do you reccommend?

High zddp oil, doesnt matter which, Brad Pen, Kendall, Valvoline, Rislone ...

I used Valvoline for years and Castrol is good, too. Most name brand oil is good nowadays, but I have found that some cars I've had used more of one than some others. I believe any oil that says SL on the top is the latest. Right gang? Some of those were turbo. They benefited from frequent changes and an oil cool down pump.  :)

I found out my old car has a flat tappet cam, with hydraulic lifters ,and the oil these days lacks the zddp for these cams. I have decided to add 4 oz of redline engine break in additive ,according to the discussions going on on this website, to boost this. It seems to be a good idea.

Makes sense, good oil is cheap enough, cheaper than engine rebuild, why take a chance. I got used to hearing valve ticking on those flat engines but makes me wonder how far is ticking from tapping. Got myself some oil additive too.
