Title: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by renegade1 on 05/20/13 at 21:56:23

Hey guys just wondering what kind of pipes you have all been running? I've been thinking of running a straight pipe instead of the bulky muffler with maybe a small baffle in it...? sound good and do the jets then have to be messed with?

YOu can get a decent bump in power, a much nicer sound that will not make everyone hate you AND you wont create yourself a headache trying to get it to run right AND its cheap AND it looks good
Dyna

& No, Dyna isnt my name,

Have run open, and then a gutted 12" glasspack (packing keeps burning out, cheap JC Whitney/Shadetree Powersports sourced Emgo/Motoasia garbage) with a 29" fishtail extension for over a decade. Added a "stick stopper/beer can" baffle, have seen it listed both ways in the catalogs, in 2005 or 2006. Open pipe the bike sounds like a single engine UH1D Huey medivac helicopter, with the glasspack baffle and stick stopper it sounds like a LOACH (Light Observation/Attack Craft, Helicopter)... Be ready for noise violation issues unless you live in one of the very few states that has lifted its muffler requirements.

One of the best things about living where I do... lax motorcycle policies. No muffler restrictions (open pipes are legal), no handlebar height limit, turn signals not required, only need one mirror to be legal and they don't specify which side of the bike or set size requirements. Oh, and you can in fact get a motorcycle only license here...

Stock airbox and filter with the access door removed since 1999 or early 2000. Stock jetting through 2006, then bumped up to a 155/55, which is way too fat, even with the intake/exhaust modifications. Smokes like an old big cam 400 powered Freightliner, lots of toasted black fuel vapors and heavy carbon fluff deposits. In combination with the 15" rise handlebars and full rear fender, dropped the fuel economy from the 70s into the mid 30s mpg.

I ran an empty slash cut for a year until it rusted out (screamin eagle), then picked up a fishtail with a baffle for $20 at a yard sale. Much quieter now :( , makes the neighbors happier when I leave at 7am, and also authority figures from this fascist state.

Those are sounds I will never forget...burned into my brain they are.

I grew up a few miles from Gray's Army Airfield (on Fort Lewis) in western Washington. The sight and sound of 300 Hueys, Blackhawks, Chinooks, Cobras and observation birds going over the house will likely never be forgotten. Biggest single sortie training mission they ever flew.

One of the Dad's in the Scout Troop was a retired CWO, started flying Cobras when the Corp got them, retired from the Army after a service to service transfer in the late 1960s. One of his old Cobras was sold to the WA State Dept of Natural Resources as a wildland fire fighting craft... he recognized its Army tail numbers through the cheap state repaint.  ;D

I keep looking for the dyna  but can't find it anywhere at a reasonable cost. I phoned Harley down the street here and they said I'd have to buy both of them and it was around 200 some odd dollars. Was hoping to find one on here. What's the usual price for these?

Got mine shipped off ebay for $30.

I run a Jardine pipe. loud and farty. Nearly fully open. Had trouble tuning the carb for it. I eventually got it tuned with still a bit of backfiring. Still working on it.

Watch eBay and you will find one (or a pair) at a reasonable price.  If you get a pair.....you can always sell the extra one here.  You should be able to get really nice ones for about $ 30 each.  No need to buy rusty, dented or scratched ones.......wait a week and a better set will come along.

I posted an add on Craiglist.....and got several responses and ended up buying a nearly new pair for $ 50.

Make sure you get the one with the slotted bracket (similar to the savage mount) close to the middle of the muffler, not the end. Don't get the ones with the tabs or studs. Also, make sure it does not have a crossover pipe.

The BEST place to look is a local independent harley shop. Not a dealer selling chrome. The kind that's run by guys with dirt under their nails, builds custom jobs, and has a shed full of used parts out back.

Man,, custom shops take Dyna muffs off all day long. Theyll sell for a whoppin $20.00. YOur local shop is just being nasty. TRy callin & acting like youre a HD owner, just moved to town & had an "In TRansit" accident, looking for a clean, used Dyna. Ohh, & If you have that last guys name, try talkin to someone else.

Abbotsford? Next time you make a run down to Seattle stop at the Bent Bike in Lynnwood WA. They should have stacks of take off mufflers, I worked t the Auburn store and we stacked them like cord wood. HD, Honda, Yamaha, etc each had a designated "bin" they were put into. Bring it home in your car trunk, no hassle with customs that way.

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by renegade1 on 05/23/13 at 09:21:39

I actually just heard about that shop a couple weeks ago and been told its pretty awesome. Perfect place to go and piece your bike together. That sure would be cool if you still worked there haha, another question about the muffler though... is there any way to not have it chrome? Don't  like the shine of it.

320 grit sand paper followed by bbq paint... In my pic it needs repainted, lasts a couple years between coats.

Like so:http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/CameraDump112310081_zps966c0bdf.jpg

The gas tank, fuel filter, gas cap and cap cover, rear fender, tail light, plate mount, headlight shell, headlight guts, headlight mounts, grips, cables, mirrors, seat and springs all came from Bent Bike in Auburn. Bars are from an independent HD shop in Tacoma. Sissybar is out of a friend's collection.

It now has a VN800A 2 up seat, 2 tone paint, no fork gaiters, different mirror mounts (modified windshield clamps from Memphis Shades, Emgo mirror clamps are garbage), needs new grips, the 1970s n.o.s. ones have finally split (7 years on the current bars)...

Take a thick skin in with you, the shop has interesting items and atrocious customer service.

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by renegade1 on 05/23/13 at 11:01:46

I'm guessing more of a pick and pay shop. I know a couple of those places... awesome though I'll check that out someday. How crazy of a sanding job do I need to do until I can paint it?

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by WD on 05/23/13 at 15:44:54

Scuff the entire unit until the shine is gone. The paint needs to have a rough enough surface under it to ensure a mechanical bond, not just a paint on paint style chemical bond.

How's those Helicopter sounds compare to a PBR-(Patrol Boats River)?

As for those looking for a Dyna muffler...cost too much for me so I made this muffler myself last week cause I got tired of re-packing my fiberglass ones every 2-3 months.

I bought a spiral steel baffle (1 1/2" I.D.) from Dennis Kirk on close-out (They don't have any more), a 2 1/4" x 24" steel exhaust pipe and a 2 1/4" to 1 3/4" reducer from Auto Zone - welded them together, cut a 45 degree slash on the end shortening the pipe to 18", installed the baffle, welded on a mount bolt on the back and painted the whole thing with High heat (2,000 degree) gloss black paint. Don't know how it sounds yet but it gets installed next week. No more re-packing!! :)

Cost -

Exhaust pipe - $11.00
Exhaust reducer - $4.95
Dennis Kirk / HardKrome Spiral Exhaust Baffle - $34.95 plus $11.00 S&H

vers.... you think they really wont use that sign for fineing? I doubt that for sure. To many laws that are rediculous... Where i live we can't have tint on the front seat windows or we will get a $200 dollar fine or a Complete V.I. for having our race cars straight piped. Just crazy ...

Do people move their rectifier into the air box even when its still being used or they get the K&N first so it's not funcional anymore?

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by ToesNose on 05/24/13 at 04:08:26

Renegade is it illegal to have tint on the front windows, or is it illegal to have over a certain shade of tint on the front windows?

And yea people put the rectifier in the functioning air box.   ;)

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations

illegal to have tint on the front windows. I believe in the states you can tint them how you'd like if I'm correct. That's what my family says who lives there.

And sweet thanks a lot for the answer... How do you do that just bolt it in there and away you go?

You're not allowed to tint any darker then the darkest factory tint.
Which many people ignore anyway just like they're not supposed to text or hands on call either.

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by renegade1 on 05/24/13 at 10:09:27

makes sense. the only ones that can have it are the ones that have it from factory .. bmw Mercedes audi... and so on all of which I can not afford haha. Is there big fines where you live for loud exhaust or do they usually ignore it?

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by verslagen1 on 05/24/13 at 11:24:03

I think you mis under stand me...
you can get your tint anywhere.
It just can't be darker than any factory available tint.

That'll go good in the crash report... cause of accident... limo tint on drivers and forward windshield... goes well with "I didn't see him"

There are still a few "wake the dead" exhaust pipes in my area, not limited to m/c's either.  So either they are ignored or not bothered with until something else comes up.

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by apache snow on 05/24/13 at 11:41:59

It varies from state to state. In Tennessee for the front windshield..  Non-reflective tint is allowed along the top of the windshield above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

The supertrapp has the best deep rumble and makes it sound alot like a Harley Davidson or at least half of one anyway. The ability to add and remove discs for more power means as the instructions say, you do not need to rejet the carburetor.  Expensive tho!  Almost $400 for the muffler but well worth it.

There are some owners on here who seem unlikely to spend more than $20 for anything, which I can understand for a bike from the 80s or 90s. Those of us who bought newer models are more inclined (I think) to spend a few more dollars on upgrades.

I don't think $62.00 for a solid steel muffler that won't burn out is a lot to pay......I had the fun & experience of building my own muffler.....plus it kept me off the streets and out of trouble for a while ;D

I forgot to add I put in one of Lancers high performance cams and combined with the supertrapp it made a whole lot of difference in performance. I'm not sure if he is still selling the cam but if he is, you might consider one.

I spent the Big $$ on a Supertrapp. I also did the stage 1 cam, Each gave about the same Bump in power. I wish I had gone with the Dyna,
They cost tons less, look better & give almost the same performance boost.
The slight difference in power just isant worth the Big difference in $$$,,

IDK if it matters, but I adjust valves to the tight side of Okay, so, I get that last bit of Opened Valve.
Jets in the carb
white washer
idle air
S/trapp w/14 disks
K&N drop in
& I weigh about 145.

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by apache snow on 05/28/13 at 09:48:34

I never adjust valves to the tight side. The valves always tighten up over the miles. The reason is because of wear on the valve face and valve seat. This causes the valve stem to stick up slightly higher decreasing the valve clearance on the adjuster.

When the clearance is allowed to get too tight the exhaust valves can burn. Sitting tightly on the seat dissipates heat.

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/28/13 at 10:35:49

My bike did jut the opposite. The adjusters rounded & compacted, loosening the setting. After the adjusters "broke in" & slowed @Waaay down on their changing profile I still adjust to the tight side & find I no longer have to adjust at 5,000 mile increments. The valve faces & seats shouldnt be changing enough to be the deciding factor in how it adjusts unless they just didnt get the seats all the way down & youre slowly spanking them into place every compression stroke,

Title: Re: Exhaust questions/recomendations
Post by apache snow on 05/28/13 at 11:08:37

Yours would be an unusual case. I have been adjusting motorcycle valves since the 60s and have observed most of the time that they tighten up. As have others I have spoken with.

There are always exceptions. I have seen poor heat treating and metallurgy causing short life in the adjusters and valve train. But this is rare but it does happen.

If the adjuster nuts are not torqued down enough they could loosen some. If the wrong oil or sub par oil is used there can be premature valve train and rocker arm wear. But also cam wear. I believe I will stick to what my long term experiences tell me.  :)

I think body weight is a important contributing factor.

But I don't go to church, so does it matter? And when I did, the priest always accelerated mass so we can get home for the football game.:)

ahahhaha " and thank god for football and please let us win " amen. Yeah I'm 5'8 155lbs and I can get it pretty quick off the line but I seem to always want just that little bit more...
As for the valves I always thought they loosen up and that's why you do the adjustments... to tighten them back down. very interesting.

For them to tighten up is rare. They DO "tighten up" some when the valve grows from heat. Thats why you have to leave that gap.

The reason is that valve clearance will always get tighter over time as the valves wear. From the 2nd one,,

I can assure you, that is absolutely not always correct. My valve adjusters rounded off & shortened from the banging & beating, pushing the valves down. They did that at a rate that far exceeded the valve & seat wear that allowed them to press further up into the head.
The part about the ramps doesnt quite make sense to me either. I know Id rather have anything thats gonna hit me start off as close to me as possible, rather than be standing off & then slammed into me,,Close adjustments keep the ramp from slamming into the rocker & slapping the valve. That makes sense in my head. REsults discovered on race tracks by people with years of experience may contradict that. Ive set mine close for 20,000 miles, Ive seen no sign that Im doing it wrong,

I can post 15 or 20 more threads that say the same thing..The whole world can't be wrong..just saying. :)

Your case is not the norm although it does happen.

see valve recession..

The adjusters were pointy like a pencil, almost. I thot it was a bad design when I saw them. They slowly pounded down & rounded off & work hardened. I no longer need to adjust as often.

I'm in the same process also trying to get some new jets to test out.

seems like the struggle to have it properly jetted is an ongoing process depending on distance from sea level. does the temperature affect the performance also though?

its crazy I've phoned Harley here and they say they don't have any of them and everywhere else said they don't also. Seems to be more of a struggle to get them locally here ... sort of frustrating. :o

last thing you want to tell HD is that you want it for a japanese bike.

You never know exactly what goes through another persons mind.

Some dealers may think....I got these take off mufflers that I am not going to use, and I might as well help somebody out and get a few bucks for them.  He might be a good return customer someday.

-or-

I am not going to sell these stock mufflers.....cause I wont't make any money on them and I can make a lot more profit by selling him some new aftermarket fancy/shancy ones!

yeah that's true and that's what I believe is happening. A guy I met with a savage (sportster slip on) said he talked to a local shop and they told him that they just throw them in the garbage at the end of the day so go pick through the bin after close. haha I'm catching a drift that they just want a up sale. :(

That's the name of the game... upsell any and everything you possibly can. Bike and parts pricing in the northwest is horrible. I paid $5800 in 2008 for a low miles 2005 VN800B (Classic). Yesterday I found a 2000 model with 13K on it for $2500 (I'm broke, of course), and the stealership guy kept steering me to the brand new 2009-2012 models for a whole lot more. Tempting, but, not that fond of Yamaha. Although, $9500 out the door for a Road Star isn't bad.

If you weren't in Canada I could probably hook you up. But a used muffler isn't worth the extra FEES involved. I remember selling a Shadow 500 (early cartoon style) for about $1800, the border fees were close to 1/3 more. $600 to get it into BC, for a bike that should have fetched maybe $500 off the lot... :o
