Title: can I grind this tab off my frame?
Post by strang on 01/08/14 at 14:58:29

I've been busy building myself a motorcycle table. Today I tried pushing my savage up the rather steep ramp I built for it and found that this triangular section of the frame catches on the ramp at the leveling point. I got under the bike with the torch and can't actually see what function this bit of the frame has? the front footpeg mounts are independent of this bit so what is it actually for? Is it to re-enforce things generally in the footpeg area? Can I just grind the triangular point off it and job done?

actually the parts fiche drawing doesn't really show the bit I'm talking about so I went out and did a shot with my phone:

Seems pretty useless,... I say, grind away...

Although,.. you might want a second opinion... just so I don't get blamed if you screw something up...;D...

yeh Serow I can't see WTF it's for either. Is it so they can hang the frame when factory painting?

That tab aligns the board I use to lift the bike.

Looks like the spring for the kickstand is attached to the inside of it???

Nevermind, went and looked at the wife's savage and I can see no reason for it to be there, looks like it was part of the foot peg/mount brace on that side of the frame, but nothing is attached to it.

IMHO it is not part of the frame, it looks like it was welded on and painted over.

Is your bike 2nd hand or was it bought new ?

It could well be it was an add-on by a previous owner for whatever his requirement.

However, we only have a pic from one side of the tab.

Take a pic from the other side as well, enlarge, and see what the tab is for.

If "it's just there", then you have a case for getting rid of it.

If it "does stuff" then it has a reason to stay.

;)

OK, Strang, we want to know what happened when you hit it with the grinder? Anything spectacular?

Well I looked at my frame, and it has that angular piece as well.  I can't really see a reason for it - but I don't have the stock peg on mine anymore.  Was the tab supposed to somehow protect and deflect stuff away from the shift linkage or kick stand mount?????  Could it have been used as a place to hold the frame at the factory while the bike was being assembled?

I don't see any reason you have to keep it.

Thats what I was thinking. Anyone have a different idea, please do toss it out.

Could it be there as a lever aid when installing the sidestand spring?...

TIP... when removing the sidestand spring,.. fill the spring gaps with a bunch of coins or washers while the leg is at full extension... Then the spring comes off easy... Leave the coins in place for easy reinstall...
(this will save you many busted knuckles)... ;)...
