Title: Dyna Muffler installed: loud with throttle closed?
Post by Fishbulb on 09/08/14 at 12:06:15

Savages,

Installed my Dyna muffler this weekend (rail mount, looks to have a cat). Install was smooth, don't seem to have any leaks. Muffler sounds good, bike seems to run good.

Carb is original jetting (i think!), 2 washers for the white spacer and I think 1.5-2 turns out. We are about 4-500 ft above sea level.

However, when riding and I close the throttle, I get a lot more noise. No hard backfires or anything, just a lot of burbling, etc. at a much higher volume.

Is this normal? Anything I should check? I plan to rejet when I put in the K&N... only time for one project at a time!

Thanks!

The dyna mufflers are nothing compared to the Emgo shorty megaphone muffler or any mostly open muffler or pipe.

With the Emgo, closing the throttle to decelerate sounded like a diesel truck with a jake brake kicked in. Just a loud "blat blat blat" until the engine speed neared idle, then a lot of gurgling and burping. No loud gunshot afterfires.

It sounded better backing off then when accelerating.

Big singles sound like that. My high-school Ducati 250 did the same thing. They also get a real hollow-sounding exhaust note when the engine is running at a nice cruising speed and the throttle is held open just enough to maintain the current speed (overrun condition)

It's just the nature of the beast. Embrace it.

Oh, i have no problems with it...as long as I am not F-ing anything up! :)

It does, however, confirm that I would not be a straight pipe guy...

Thanks!

Normal, sort of like a Jacobs brake on a diesel.

consider it a polite way of saying "get the hell outta may way"

Had a Dyna muffler, put it on my bike and rode it for a day then took it off. Screwed up the carb tuning and was way too loud, top speed was 85mph. Went back to a sporty with a 1/2 hole drilled through the baffle and the bike runs like stink up to 94mph. Raps and burbles on slowdown from speed, sounds like it is singing.
With the stage 1 cam I'm hoping for the ton. Some back pressure is a good thing for the engine breathing.
Different bikes like different tuning. Find what works for yours.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference? I thought they were all pretty much the same except the mounting options...???

Thank you!

Probably had no baffle at all... not stock...

Never checked the Dyna for baffles, it was a $5.00 flea market buy during bike week. I would think Serowbot is right about the baffles, don't know cause the Dyna went into the trash a long time ago.

Look at the ass end with a butt light in hand.
if you see black hole all the way thru, then you don't have a baffle.
If you see a plate about half way thru the muff, then you have a baffle.
if you have a long enough probe, stick it in, if it stops, then you have found something.   :-?
