Title: Does freedom really exsist? Post by raydawg on 05/25/16 at 04:53:37 Is there such a thing as unfettered freedom? Do you understand the question? I offer you the answer no. Just like the island I live on, it is getting smaller from natural erosion. The rain, winds, and water asult her, it's part of what they do.... Man however can accelerate it by his actions too. If I cut into the earth, remove trees for a better view, etc, I have hastened the effects of erosion from the islands inception. As we try and fit more people and homes on her, we must make consession and adjustments to the betterment of all. We can never turn back the hands of time, or live in the past. Some old timers here view this as an invasion and a bad thing, harboring ill will as a constant companion.... Tell me, how does that better their lot? It's a stretch, but I think we can extend this parable to our democracy.... And I find it is a natural thing, not sinister.... However, our task is to elect good stewards of freedom who have wisdom in the balance, for all, not a select group. |

Title: Re: Does freedom really exsist? Post by Serowbot on 05/25/16 at 06:37:40 Unfettered freedom would allow you to take actions that could hurt others. That's why we must fetter it... "Fetter" is a word,.. how 'bout that?... ;D "Beware ... there are mine fields out there. Most of them are inert. However, some of them are ert".... - Sgt. Ross :-/ |

Title: Re: Does freedom really exsist? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/26/16 at 00:35:42 No,, not if you are in society. You can go up in the mountains somewhere, stack logs, survive on your wits, and be free, till someone discovers you and decides that you need some fettering in your life. |

Title: Re: Does freedom really exsist? Post by Ed L. on 05/26/16 at 06:37:48 It's freedom within the constrains of whatever society you try to belong to. Full freedom becomes anarchy which is why we all get fettered in our actions, thoughts and words. It's all an illusion of control while we swim in circles in our little fish tank. ;) ;) ;) |

Title: Re: Does freedom really exsist? Post by Serowbot on 05/26/16 at 08:22:09 If you think about it,... the entire concept of government is to limit individual freedoms in order to live together peaceably... The only true freedom is anarchy... ..kinda' makes flag waving seem counter-intuitive... :-? The flag represents your social agreement to live within the bounds of the agreed upon restrictions imposed by governance... "Freedom" and flags, don't mix... :-/ |

Title: Re: Does freedom really exsist? Post by Paraquat on 05/26/16 at 09:32:09 Money is the key. Money equals freedom. You want to go live on a mountain somewhere, hope you own the land. Here in Connecticut you can't get an AR15 anymore (for $5-800). But you buy a preban rifle for $3000. You can't manufacture a machine gun since '86, but you can buy a legal form 4 MG for ~20k. You want to process chemicals but it's dangerous? Cheaper to have crappy conditions? Move the operation over seas. That way if something bad happens like fire or a gas leak, those lives cost less. Fire: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/workers-die-factories-tommy-hilfiger/story?id=15966305 Gas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster You want to travel the country. Passport costs money, so does air fare. Money equals freedom. --Steve |

The difficulty is always about who gets to decide what those bounds are, and the disagreement over how onerous those restrictions have to be. Who gets to decide who else's freedoms are infringed and to what extent. The trend unfortunately is almost always in the direction of more restrictions and less freedom. Fine and dandy for those OK with the rules. Not so great for those who are not. |

Oh man. I was taking Writer's Comp 2 in college and the teacher asked this. "What would you do if there were no police?" One girl said "Hide in my apartment and hope I don't get raped." I said "Post up and hold the block." I brought this up to a kid I was training. He was 20. He said in this situation, and a la The Walking Dead, people would come together and unite and maintain order. I told him he was delusional. There would be bandits, rape gangs, chaos, rioting, looting... --Steve |

Title: Re: Does freedom really exsist? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/26/16 at 15:09:44 I think the immediate response of a society that suddenly was without authority maintaining, forcing under penalty of force, polite behavior, there would be a Huge spike in violent crime. The decent members of society would band together and create an ad hoc police force, and the Neighborhood Watch concept would be the order of the day. Vigilante justice would correct the criminals in places, criminals would concentrate in certain areas, as would good people. Early in human development communities came into existence. I can't find it and can't remember what I read, but a small community really doesn't need a police force. It takes a surprisingly small number to start to need some oversight. Of course, the Kind of people who make up the community plays a huge role. The There is no real right or wrong Situational Ethics crowd? Ohhh, gonna be needing cops. Imagine the jerks in government suddenly completely free of the potential for prosecution, ohhh, wait,, |
