Title: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 05/30/16 at 19:19:08 Finally fired up my RYCA street tracker. It fired up so fast it scared me for a second. Runs well, still needs alittle jet work. But when I shut it down I hear a click and a winding sound for maybe 1 second,I know it's something to do with the starter drive. Just don't know if it's normal, it been 2 1/2 years since it ran last, don't recall if it made the sound before. So does your savage make this noise ? Or do I have an issue ? |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by youngde811 on 05/30/16 at 19:23:00 I have a 2014 S40 and it occasionally makes the same noise. I asked about it once on this forum and it's apparently a non-issue. I don't worry about it. However, smarter people here will perhaps reply differently. David |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by verslagen1 on 05/30/16 at 19:46:15 I believe you're hearing the starter torque limiter work. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 05/30/16 at 20:14:36 So normal condition Versy? It runs great, that's the only thing that made me worry. It pulls like a beast, haven't tried to wheelie it yet! |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by SugarBoogers on 05/31/16 at 11:20:15 Mine does that too. I'm glad you brought it up. I'll ignore it for the time being then unless it's decided it's serious. Also I get that POP at shutdown which I think is hysterical. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by SugarBoogers on 05/31/16 at 11:25:21 Mine goes whizz wheeee POP! I chuckle every time. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/31/16 at 11:56:40 I truly enjoyed hearing mine growl spit and snarl as I went down through the gears. That last Hurrah when I shut down always made me smile. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 05/31/16 at 12:40:42 Thanks guys , I guess it's normal , wow I really like a big single with a happy button , it's so cool ! So light & nimble, but it has more motor than brakes going to have to work on that ! |

Ain't it the truth! Thanks Suzuki! ::) |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 05/31/16 at 19:16:29 I thought cutting 60+ lbs off the bike and a braided brake hose and some quality pads would help the brakes, if it did it wasn't by much. Guess the engine mods are overriding the brake mods. Good thing it steers really good. Just about burned my fingerprints off checking the rotor for oil or grease , Ouch ! |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Kris01 on 05/31/16 at 19:18:17 Does the braided hose really make THAT much difference? |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 05/31/16 at 20:51:19 Hold your hose to your front brake and squeeze the brake hard , that expansion of the hose is lost pressure to the caliper a braided hose reduces the expansion from 50 to 80% sending more pressure to caliper. Yes it does help. I think my pads need to wear in a bit ! |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Kris01 on 05/31/16 at 20:53:49 I'll try that in the morning. I've had to get on the brakes pretty hard before and I was less than impressed. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by KennyG on 05/31/16 at 21:13:20 Steel braided hoses definitely work as Ruttly describes. On some bikes the fork legs will spread open, front to back, when using the steel braided line. A lot of the guys that install the braided line will tell you that you should think about installing a fork brace at the same time. Just saying. Kenny G |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 05/31/16 at 21:57:23 Yes , Superbrace makes one for the savage. I put one on my RYCA ! Bike steers very nice, feels very solid even under hard braking , no wiggles no wobbles . With the shortened forks & Progressive springs it steers much quicker than a stock savage. |

So far, the EBC Organic pads are the best ones for the Savage. I have tried some others, and they take more lever force. Once you get the motor improved.....the marginal front brake becomes more of an issue - especially if you want to used that extra HP occasionally. The brake kit that Shawn makes is a huge improvement. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1391549028 |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/01/16 at 05:48:55 The rear locks up too easy. A grinder to slice grooves across the shoes, decreasing the amount of surface area to drag on the drum made a very much better brake . |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 06/01/16 at 10:19:54 My Ryca is about 315 lbs, I'm very pleased with the power. Not a wheelie machine yet , still have to do jetting. But this bike hauls ass , it breathes the way a big single should really want to open it up and see just how big her balls are , might have to go hunting some SR500s. Glad I didn't go big with the cam, it's all smooth usable power , but got to get a binder up front. Got those ebc organic pads think they need to wear in. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Dave on 06/01/16 at 12:17:19 Even the wildest of cams provided for the Savage motor is pretty calm. Don't go dropping a DR650 cam in your Savage.....the rest of the cylinder head (exhaust ports) likely be able to support that kind of breathing. With the forward lean of the rider.....the bike really doesn't want to wheelie on it's own. I don't believe I have ever had the front wheel off the ground in 6,000 miles of riding it....I suppose I could force it to wheelie if I had to.....same thing for that locked front break and smoke the back tire thing - it just doesn't fit the image of the bike. I have had mine up 101.1 mph, and I think there may be a bit more available.....I just had to do the "TON" to really fit into the Cafe' experience. TON UP! (Ignore the rpm shown....the tach was having a glitch!). |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 06/01/16 at 12:47:16 Hey Dave , I have got to get a wheelie or two to know how it's gonna act when I get crazy stupid. Street tracker need to wheelie. I went with chain drive 18 counter & 54 rear I already know it does over 100. It must have been the right combination of engine mods cause this bike moves ! |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Dave on 06/01/16 at 13:04:27 I forgot that you had a street tracker and not a Cafe'. The more upright riding position might favor wheelies a bit better. I am not opposed to wheelies, and on my trials and motocross bikes I spent a good deal of time with the front end in the air - but the Cafe' seating position doesn't lend itself to getting the front wheel in the air. (I was also more comfortable riding wheelies on a bike that only weighed 165 pounds). |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Ruttly on 06/01/16 at 15:01:52 Your Ryca is red correct with the digital dash |

I am seriously considering it but I'm wondering about the availability of replacement pads, etc. |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Dave on 06/01/16 at 18:59:55 It is no problem getting replacement pads for Shawn's big brake kit. The caliper is used on sport bikes and some cruisers......it is a very common caliper and pads. If you don't buy the caliper from Shawn, he will tell you which one you need to find. Dave |
Title: Re: Strange noise when engine is shutdown Post by Kris01 on 06/01/16 at 19:27:37 Ok, then I shouldn't have anything to worry about. I had one of those " :o " moments the other day and needed a lot more from my brakes than they could provide! Ya gotta love bad drivers!!! I may have to move this waaay up on my wish list! |
