That stopped me. I heard she was stabbed, but thought she was going to live. Now, I hear she was shot, too. How sad,, I don't know what she stood for, but I don't care. Poor thing is dead. And that's sad, though I wouldn't feel such sorrow for some of America's female pols should they be killed.
Where were her armed guards?

I THOUGHT guns were banned there.

Guns are highly restricted in the UK,... but, some are allowed... (and a small number may be kept illegally)...

Early reports said it looked like an antique weapon... it may have been a collectable or family heirloom...
At least this limited the carnage to 1 dead and 1 injured....
Unlike the Giffords shooting, where 6 died and 13 were wounded...

Sadly, these sad events can happen anywhere...

You want less killing?
Make self defense legal.

Best regards,

I read some speculation that the motive may have been political, related to the upcoming referendum on whether or not Great Britain should leave the EU. Mrs. Cox was a strong proponent of staying in, and some witnesses said that the attacker was yelling "Britain out !" or something like that, which is apparently a catch phrase used by the faction that is in favor of the country exiting the EU.

Even if that's the case, I think it's pretty hard to dismiss the " insane nut job" component.

Sane people don't do sh*t like that.

I can accept the rational that an unbalanced person can commit a horrendous crime.  The little that I read basically said they were bat $hit crazy and they was not motive as of yet.

So,

A promising young woman with a bright future is dead. A country that is very important on the world stage is in the midst of a political upheaval that might very well determine the fate of the European Union. Something that has ramifications for our own country.

And we're gonna just have the same  old dumb a*s arguments about gun control ? ::)

Get yer' knickers out of their bunch...

Firstly,... we were talking about the UK...
It wasn't limited to the US...
Secondly,.. What rules?...
... and lastly,... Intellectual Dishonesty is not just my domain...
This kettle's calling you out... ;D

Sure,. America's 4 times the size of England...
They have 200 gun deaths per year... we have 600 per day...
Isn't it the height of intellectual dishonesty to say we need more guns, and fewer gun free zones...?...
England,... is a gun free zone,... and it's clearly working...

Sorry, oldNslow... you're right, but I had to reply to that accusation...

Title: Re: UK has had it's Gabby Giffords moment...

"Put Britain first" not "Britain out"  was what the guy supposedly was yelling. Another witness claimed that he didn't say anything. They have the guy in custody so presumably they'll eventually hear from him directly about what his motive was. Unless he tells them that "The voices in my head told me to do it."

My guess is that it was political to at least some degree. The vote on the referendum is next week. I don't believe that the fact that this happened now is just a coincidence.

A working gun free zone equals zero.

Look at Where the shootings ARE.
And yes, Americans Free to protect themselves will equal fewer dead.

The high gun murder rate is IN your much sought after
Gun Free zones.

Look at Chicago. Over sixty over the memorial day weekend.

I'm really, really,  busy this week...  posting in shorthand....

.... but,...
we can argue, less is more... in a general way...
lower taxes = more revenue...
smaller gov'nt = better ...

..but,.. more guns = less death...
just don't add up... not logically, statistically,... or mathematically...

...does more eggs = less chickens?...
... more dough = less bread?...
... more calories = less weight?..
... more heat = less sweat?...

Intellectual Dishonesty...

Sometimes,... less of something, equals more of the other...
Logic dictates...

If I take away your gum... there wil be less chewing... :-?

Pardon...
I'm playing 3 minute a shot keep up, this week...
... went to an appointment today, scheduled for next week...

Sheet harpoons... :-?

I'm not sure more guns equals more deaths is true.

There are fewer murders now than 20 years ago.

There are certainly more guns now than 20 years ago.

So, logically, statistically, more guns do equal less murders, right?
Am I missing something?

Title: Re: UK has had it's Gabby Giffords moment...
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/17/16 at 07:21:19

Again, look at WHERE the mass shootings are.
Gun Free zones. Certainly a
Fewer Guns location.
I'm not suggesting everyone be armed. Actually, if a law was passed making CC legal, no license, I would get trained but I probably wouldn't carry unless I was traveling.
The thing is by making it Legal for people to Be armed anywhere then the people who want to commit mass murder wouldn't Know that they were walking into a
Free Kill zone.
But, here we get into property rights. The owner has a right to deny what he disagrees with on his property.
But, by denying the clients their ability to defend themselves, does he Assume that burden? Or, since they Chose to Be there, are they accepting a risk in order to enjoy the venue?
A sort of Informed Consent situation?

FL, isn't this the state that was having rampant carjacking/crime until the gun laws were relaxed?

As a Brit, what's your take on whether the UK should stay in or get out of the EU?  Since they don't use the Euro currency, is it a big deal either way?
Years ago I had a friend and client who worked at a company that did a lot of business all over Europe.  She loved the Euro because part of her job was pricing her company's services.  Every morning, very early, prior to the Euro, should had to get in her office around 4 AM here in Ohio, check all of the overnight changes in exchanges rates for all of the European currencies, and change her prices according from U.S. Dollars into all of those dozen or more currencies.
After the Euro she had to check only 3 rates:  Euro, British Pound, and Swiss Franc.
The poor lady died few years ago; fell off of her horse and hit her head on a rock.  And people say motorcycles are dangerous.

Louisiana showed the way. People were getting killed all the time. The Governor finally said, Arm yourself, defend yourself, and in a matter of a coupla weeks, with car jackers Dying, kicking, screaming, gutshot in the streets, it ended.
The people who were so affected in Florida were tourists.
The travel industry told them
Hide maps, binoculars, luggage, everything that would make you look like a tourist.
Rental car companies stopped putting decals on the cars.
They were Still getting mugged..
Then the Governor said
Arm and I defend yourself.

And, in a short time, the news stopped being about tourist victims in Florida.

And THAT is what arming victims does.

Handcuffing the bullys victims really isn't a great way to stop fistfights.

Is that new orleans your referring to or all of la?  After Katrina, all the crime was dispersed to the surrounding communities & states.  Places that were half way decent, now people get mugged at gun point in the parking lot of a nice mall.

I don't remember it being so much localized to N.O.., I remember the news just continuing to be about the horrific ways some drivers died, snagged in a seat belt, dragged, run over, and all because they were defenseless. Watching that game come to a halt within weeks, after all that time, all that horror, all those lives, the families ruined, all because the darned gutless among us want everyone to be safe, by being defenseless. Watching the bad guys stop after a few died painfully was cold comfort. Throw the helmet away.. be safer.

Car jacking was a bit of a fad crime,... it had it's day... but, it dropped off everywhere.
Carry laws were only coincidentally related...
The crime itself proved hard to pull off... criminals just quit trying it...

PS... If I stick a gun in your face,... are you dumb enough to draw on me?...
Your brains are going to make a mess of my new car's upholstery... ;D

You can have your opinion, but I saw what I saw.
While the bad guys were not getting caught or hurt, i t was a going thing.
Texas wasn't on the news much,I don't remember any, actually, Louisiana was.
Louisiana changed the rules.
Game over.
But, you can see what you want.

Crime that is a felony isn't a fad. It's a business. You might find a coupla times when a few punks pull one and dump the car, but the majority were one man, walking up, yanking the door open and dragging the driver out. Go read some crime reports.Don't ask me how they were done. I remember what grizzly horrors were committed. Hearing about the gutshot , screaming, kicking, dying creeps made me feel great.

I'm not that familiar with the debate...
My day saw the change to decimal money... hapenny's and farthings were fun... crowns and shillings...
Penny"s though, were insanely huge... ;D

I think I'm generally for remaining in the EU...

You've never heard of copycat crimes?...
A nut took off for the LA  Gay Pride Parade with a load of weapons the day after the Florida shootings... copycat = fad...

There was a rash of car jackings here when the whole jacking craze started...  (I carried a flat blade screwdriver on my drivers door (figured to stab the jackers forearm into the headliner....yes, I'm that evil)...
...but then carjacking became rare... fad over... no gun laws changed.  We've had open carry since Wyatt Earp...

Gotta be a cat to copy. Whatever Caused it, it was not a short time thing. Your dad or sister didn't get killed while everyone waited for the jokers to stop the game. The game ended very shortly after the rule change. But you can see it all as coincidence. The car thefts were Gonna stop.. but the dead creeps in the road didn't do it...

Actually, I know of two incidents in the past year where people were mugged at gun point at their home.  They pulled into their driveway or garage and as soon as they cracked the drivers side door there was the thug.  One incident was in Atlanta and the other was Memphis.  The police in Atlanta said that was extremely common.

In St Louis last month, a 21 year old woman with 9 month old baby in back of car in a car seat and her friend in who was 6 months pregnant in the front were carjacked by two "youths". One guy threw the driver to the ground, put a gun in her face and said "die b!tch" and blew her head off. The other guy threw the pregnant girl across the road and they took off. Couple blocks later they noticed the car seat so they slowed down, opened the door and pitched it out. No kidding.

Cops caught up to one of the "youths" couple days later and they had a shootout. They riddled him with bullets. I say "youths" because thats what our local paper calls blacks involved in serious crimes. Funny thing, this crime was so bad, not a peep about police brutality. They blew this kid into swiss cheese and no protests followed. Guess this kid was so bad, the regular protesters must have decided not all black lives matter afterall...
