Title: Roving trips Post by Oldfeller on 10/09/16 at 20:22:14 We have talked about having various trips scattered around the country. Some of them are a fair distance away, and most folks truck or trailer their bike to get to them. These 5-8 day trips are sorta high stress hurried things sometimes, and I am suggesting a new, different approach to get to the same end, one that applies for those of us who are retired or planning to be retired shortly. Ride, slowly, using back roads -- nothing bigger than a two lane. Enjoy the journey, make getting there and back again a novel quest to use different roads, make lots of interesting stops along the way. Sleep in a one man tent, live cheap, ride -- slowly. What drives this, for me, now? I just had to pull a 12 hour 7pm to 7am night shift with practically no warning -- a hurricane requirement. It drove my blood sugar up to around 350 and had me seeing floaters in my eyeballs due to elevated blood pressure. I am still struggling to get my blood sugar back down and into control again. My direct scheduling boss acts like he doesn't really want to have to understand jack shite about where I am medically and that his CARELESS screwing around is costing me my retirement years -- if this continues as it has been going I will HAVE no retirement years apart from a wheel chair (after they chop my feet off that is). And yes, I am willing to quit now. Not happy about it, but willing to do it. |

Title: Re: Roving trips Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/10/16 at 04:17:51 It's difficult to get some people to understand that each of the People on their staff is a Team Member. Using the talents, skills and ABILITIES OF the team members in a way that Gets the job done Doesn't injure or diminish any team members Is part of the boss's JOB. A coach wouldn't stick a wide receiver in a tackles slot and expect it to work out. ABILITIES have to be considered. And, by the same token, once the physical demands of being On a team are greater than ones abilities, it's time to step down, nobody needs to be a skinny guy in the tackles slot.. He's Gonna get pounded. Every member is an asset. I have my amount of energy, then, I'm SPENT. My wife used to ask me to do things that She could Do, she just didn't wanna.. I finally had to point out that there are things she CAN'T do, that I do.. and if she wants Those things done Stop Spending ME on stupid crap. Do it yourself, or, don't expect all the Other stuff to get done. I can't do it all anymore. Took a few rehearsals for her to get it all remembered. |

Title: Re: Roving trips Post by Oldfeller on 10/10/16 at 11:03:43 Back to the Roving Trip, we got us some meets out in the Midwest that are candidates to ride out to and we got a Florida trip left over from last year that got scragged due to "life intruding on the fun stuff". I have never done the Gulf States before and I guess I should go see New Orleans before it gets all washed away again. Ditto for the all the rest of the country. |

Title: Re: Roving trips Post by bobert_FSO on 10/10/16 at 11:43:34 I think a low-speed backroads trip sounds like fun. I can't think of anything simultaneously more boring, tiring and scary than spending the day riding a motorcycle 70 MPH on the Interstate. Granted, my bike is not set up as a long-distance cruiser. Vulcan 800 Classic. I get beat up by the wind, with or without a windshield. Most of my riding is 50-55 MPH on back roads. |

Title: Re: Roving trips Post by pg on 10/10/16 at 11:47:40 Verslagen is correct, New Orleans is not a pleasant place. If your interested in the Gulf Coast maybe tie in something like this as well. http://cruisinthecoast.com/ This is a week long car show that stretches from Gulfport to Ocean Springs, that is roughly 30 miles along the beach. Best regards, |

I've done both. 2 lanes only and cruising on the interstate. If you have the right bike it's not always bad to take the interstate. As it turns out, they are great ways to get from A to B in an efficient manner so that you can spend more time in the place you want to me. You really start to understand why when you live in the great plains. One of my favorite trips was from the St. Louis area to the Grand Canyon. We almost exclusively took 2 lane roads all the way out there. Then we spent some time in Utah and Colorado. I much preferred taking the extra day in Colorado and taking the interstate back home than dealing with 2 lane roads all the way back across Kansas and Missouri. |

It is really like a week long tail gate party with thousands of classic cars. Lots of RVs, campers, cooking out, so on. A whole bunch of casinos if you want to try your luck as well. This was ground zero for Katrina, 28.5 storm surge. Best regards |

Title: Re: Roving trips Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/10/16 at 17:06:19 I saw empty lots, nothing but foundations, a restaurant built in a shrimp boat north of the highway, and power poles painted red for the top couple of feet, by locals in little boats, 1973. |

I'm with you on this. My very best 'cycle trips were "the road less traveled.... ...the Mom& Pop motel in Pagosa Springs, CO, where "Mom" asked me if I needed clothes washed when she put in another liad of bed sheets, & "Dad" showed me a storage shed where I could park my bike... ...the three cowboys camped near me in a county campground in Flagstaff, sharing their campfire & Hamms beer that evening and breakfast the next morning... ...sleeping under the stars in a BLM campground...no light pollution, eyes adjusting to see the vast sweep of stars and a few meteors streaking in... Good memories of wandering on two wheels, no set schedule, simple camping gear and meeting Good People. |

Title: Re: Roving trips Post by MMRanch on 10/22/16 at 14:53:00 You know I've got a 5x8 low rider trailer with a ramp tailgate and a 8x10 tent with a 6 foot roof , and Military type cots so its easier to get up in the middle of the night. Maybe we could go visiting some folks with big yards :) |
