Title: New 2017 S40?
Post by norm92de on 03/13/17 at 10:48:50

What does everybody think about the new 2017 blacked out s40?

At first didn't like it but it does seem grow on you somewhat. It is in vogue so to speak. :)

Blacked out things are much harder to see in any light, having said that it gets rid of some of Suzuki's crappy quality chrome and polished aluminium, but I prefer light coloured bikes anyway. At least they don't appear to have gone to matt blacks or greys. At the present moment, I'd rather be "dorky" and seen, rather than half wittedly "cool" and dead.

I like it. Especially the version with the orange tank.

I'm a fan of the styling of the Sportster iron 883 and the Sportster 48 so that probably explains why I find the 2017 S40 color scheme attractive.

My own S40 is a 2006 (red) and I've always thought it would look better with a bit less chrome and more black.

Will 2017 be the last true S40? Market seems to be going EFI/watercooled. 8-)

I thought we all agreed last time this came up a couple of months ago that it was the ugliest looking S40 since ever?  :)

Well, we didn't ALL agree. I think the 2017 model is one of the best looking S40s( or Savages for that matter) since ever.  :) The old Savages with the two piece seats, the passenger backrests and the cartoon looking indian headdress  tank decals always seemed especially unattractive to me.

I like it in black , orange not as much , just wish they would drop the name
"Bowloflard" and just put an old school "S" on the tank !!!

I get the distinct feeling Suzuki don't want the Suzuki brand to stand out too much on the S40 .. for reasons best known to their marketing department [ch9786]

A black colored engine dissipate heat well, plus, it hides the oil leaks!

JC , If you ride at night you should be wearing some dorky reflective clothing , like I do !!!

I like the black one and your right the orange looks dorky it should have been Snow White in Black trim !

With an old school "S" on the tank and nothing else , no s40 tags either !

The ugliest part on that bike is that dam tank sticker, that alone could keep me from buying one.

Title: Re: New 2017 S40?
Post by jcstokes on 03/14/17 at 00:26:46

Ruttly, I have almost always worn Dorky white helmets and since 2012 a Dorky high vis yellow jacket, the yellow is fading a bit now. The 2016 S40's were available in a white and black, I think. I will agree with you on the tank sticker and no doubt some techie here will work out a way of removing it without damaging the paint.

If Suzuki would do like Victory did with the 8 Ball models, and sell the blacked out/de-chromed version as a separate model at a cheaper price, it might start looking a little more attractive. ::)

They are in the process of shutting down but the Eight Ball kept them afloat the last few years.  Without it they would have gone down several years ago.
Since starting they have only sold an average of 7,000 motorcycles a year, and that is not very many at all in the motorcycle world.

Apparently, Polaris decided that Indian was more lucrative, and they didn't need Victory anymore. :-/

I checked out the Scout model, but I ain't ready for a bike with a radiator, hoses, water pump etc.  I realize I am bucking the trend, thanks to Big Bro.  The Chief is a thing of beauty, but too big for me, both in size and price.  I hope they make a go of it, give the Motor Company some competition.

The CEO made a statement that the first year out the gate that Indian had eclipsed Victory's best year and that it just did not make any sense to continue loosing $$ with Victory.  They will continue parts support for Victory for 10 years.

The biggest problem with buying / owning an Indian Motorcycle is going to be the same as buying anything else Polaris sells; Who is going to repair it?

I just talked to a guy this week with a brand new Scout that has been sitting at the new Indian Dealer in Denton, TX for a month waiting on a fuel injection repair.

The greatest advantage to owning a Harley Davidson product is no matter where you live in the First 48 there is knowledgeable repair facility nearby.

Incidentally I would love to have a new Indian Scout, but I ain't gonna do it.

I think that might have been part of Victory's problem also. There was no such thing as a Victory dealer anywhere in my part of the country. The dealers were Polaris Powersports dealers that mostly sold ATVs, Snow Machines and personal watercraft and sometimes a couple of brands of lawn equipment. "And Oh , by the way, we got coupla a motorsickles over there in the corner."

That's not going to work for Indian either I don't think.  There aren't enough Indian models for a dealer be be "just" an Indian dealer either. So Indian had better be getting their bikes into the big multi line motorcycle dealers if they want to be successful in the long run.

Which is one of the reasons HD is still around, and will continue to be.

One thing that Indian has going for it that Victory didn't have is this. I don't know how much it will help their sales, but since I'm a Flat Track fan I think it's wonderful.

They'll sell you one if you got 50K burning a hole in your pocket. You're on your own with the lights though. And good luck getting a license plate for it. :)

My understanding is that Indian took all three podium positions last year.  Harley is going to campaign their new 750.  Should be interesting indeed!

Indian hired the riders that finished 1,2,3 at the last race of the season to ride the new bike this year. There was only one FTR in that race. It finished 7th.

The Harley riders, Kenny Coolbeth, Jake Johnson, and Brandon Robinson, are just as fast as anyone on equal  equipment, but it remains to be seen if the new Harley is ready for prime time yet.  They started racing the new bike in the middle of last season and they had the expected teething problems. They've had all winter to get those worked out though.

I'm as excited about this upcoming season as I have been for quite a while.

Yes.    Shayna Texter # 52. Her brother Cory, # 65 also races in that series. At one of the races last year, I can't remember which one, one of the half mles I think, the two of them were both on the grid for the main event. First brother and sister to ever do that.

Back in 2013, when Shayna was racing in the singles class, she won the Indy mile. Since moving up to the twins she's struggled a bit. The twins are a real handful compared to the singles though. They are heavier and more powerful. And Shayna is tiny. 5' tall and I'd be surprised if she weighs 100 pounds. She still can ride the h*ll out of a motorcycle though.

N'Slow,

Ray Texter was Prince Of A Guy and he treated his employees better than any dealer I ever knew. I bought my first brand new Harley Sportster from Ray & Bill Miller in the summer of 1960. XLCH $1340.00 plus $5.00 for license.

The grandkids are good people too. I was lucky enough to get a chance to speak with them briefly at the New York half mile last summer. They are good ambassadors for the sport. One of the nice features of the Flat Track series is that the pits are opened to the spectators between qualifying and the heat races. You can wander around, check out the bikes, talk to the riders. Most of the racers make a real effort to be accessible to the fans. I like checking out the bikes up close almost as much as I do the racing.

This just popped up on Cycle World. The bike that Cory Texter will be racing at Daytona tomorrow.

OK.....back to the 2017 Savage topic.

Do any of the EU members know if there is a 2017 Savage being sold in your country?

It is my belief that "all" new 2017 motorcycles in the EU are required to have ABS braking, and they all need to meet the "Euro 4" emission standards.

Title: Re: New 2017 S40?

I don't think new S40s have been sold in EU countries for a while but I'm not 100% sure of that.

I'm sure they never will be again though

Here is a pretty good rundown on the regs.

Very depressing indeed.

The EU and the ridiculous proliferation of their regulations, by unelected regulators, are having effects on everything. In aviation they wanted to accuse me of cabotage, "for flying myself" since at the time I was flying using a  British passport whilst piloting a US registered aircraft!

I have, perhaps forlorn, hopes that Brexit will help but the British have never been shy of over regulation. :'(

Cabotage /[ch712]kęb[ch601]t[ch7547]d[ch658]/ is the transport of goods or passengers between two places in the same country by a transport operator from another country. It originally applied to shipping along coastal routes, port to port, but now applies to aviation, railways, and road transport as well.

Cabotage rights are the right of a company from one country to trade in another country. In aviation, it is the right to operate within the domestic borders of another country. Most countries do not permit aviation cabotage, and there are strict sanctions against it, for reasons of economic protectionism, national security, or public safety. One notable exception is the European Union, whose Member States all grant cabotage rights to each other.[1]

So, you hauled Yourself? How confewzing..

Exactly how different from driving Yourself
From one place to another is that?

It only took 3 posts to get off topic again..... :-?

I was trying to see how many countries have already lost the Savage, as it might be an indicator of when it will be discontinued in the US.

The Savage really doesn't sell all that well in the US, and I doubt that Suzuki would keep making the bike if the US is the only place it is still being sold.

It could be that Suzuki has already made all the 2017 models that will be sold in the US....and when the supply runs out it will be the end of the Savage - who knows?

I have a US ATP but as far as the French were concerned since I am British it is cabotage? Even though I was flying a Us registered Gulfstream jet with a US licence. Go figure.

Back to square one.
Sorry to get a bit off topic. We were talking about over regulation of the motorcycle industry, same thing. I think. The EU is a monster on the backs of the populace.

Title: Re: New 2017 S40?
Post by IslandRoad on 03/23/17 at 00:24:43

In Australia we have the 2017 S40, but the bike is virtually unheard of.  I was looking for a cruiser and only saw it because a dealer showed me one as a last resort after I sat on a Vulcan 500 and a V Star 650, but didn't like them.

It's the the only other 650 cruiser available on the learner market here apart from the V Star. Learner approval requires no bigger than 660 cc and a specific power/weight ratio.

I've noticed that some dealers have been drastically reducing 2016 floor stock (I think, to below cost), and the second-hand market is sparse ... used parts are basically non-existent.
