Title: Steering damper for LS 650?
Post by LS650fan on 03/14/17 at 07:12:07

Hi there,I am not exactly that clued up when it comes to things mechanical, but I was wondering if there are steering dampers available for the S40?....if so would that help my straight line stability on the road...I find the chopper style bike a bit wayward up front....

The design is stable, but the forks are flimsy.
A fork brace is the first stop.

Didn't we just discuss this in a multi-page thread just this week?

The "chopper style", having a high rake angle and long trail, is so stable that it actually resists turning. If you find your front end a bit "wayward" there  are a few things that need to be checked or addressed before the bike is ridden again:

- make sure that the air pressure is correct at 28 to32 psi
- ensure the condition of the tire is in good order. Look for flat spots across the profile, buldges in the sidewall, cracking along the side wall. Any of these is a cause for replacement.
- make sure that the front wheel bearings aren't worn. Get the front wheel off the ground and check for side to side play or general looseness. If the tire doesn't freely spin or makes grinding noises like there's rocks somewhere in the hub, then you need bearing.
- when was the last time that the forks were serviced? What is the condition of the fork oil? Is the bike properly sprung for your weight?

If all of this checks out, then look to a fork brace.

Wasn't cutting him, just making a statement that he missed it.

Just to clarify... The chopper "laid back" forks want to go straight and resist turning a little more than the sport bike "straight up" style. Some find sport bikes a little twitchy after riding a cruiser.

Kris , But twitchy is so much fun & feels so right !
