Title: Timing help.. Am I off?
Post by TallElf on 03/18/17 at 21:04:50

Just finished putting my engine back together after doing a helicoil on the 130 bolt.  Had my piston at TDC on the install.  Matched timing mark on the case and the crank and had both lobes down.

Adjusted valves to .004 on the compression and it fires up and runs at quarter throttle but choppy.   If I let off it cuts out. I didnt want to tear it back down but it seems i have no option

Which way did you spin the crank to get it on TDC?

Will it run better on ether?

I spun it ccw.   Intake down then up.   Lined up the timing mark and did the adjustment to .004.

Didn't need a visit from the ether bunny to make it go.

How long was it down?...
Might have clogged the pilot jet...

Ether can be a troubleshooting tool.

If it's barely running but it comes to life with a snort of ether , time to think.

Down since september...  Sadly couldnt put together time. Perhaps a little cleaning could help.   Ill try and see.

It does go on a shot of ether and starts easily without it at quarter throttle.  If cleaning dosent work... I guess I pull the top and check timing

After a good cleaning she popped off like a champ.   Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best.    Thank you for the guiding light on my dull brain.    Also backfiring seems to have subsided after a new head gasket.

When I build engines I always turn engine over at least 10 revolutions then bring up the marks again and recheck cam timing ! If I've been drinking I may do that procedure twice or more to make dam sure cam timing is correct before finishing the engine. I hate the idea of having to doubt myself over cam timing. Have built at least 20 motorcycle engines and haven't screwed one up yet !
