Title: Anarchy in my Neighborhood!
Post by philthymike on 05/03/17 at 10:55:05

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/real-time/Anti-gentrification-vandals-Philadelphia-target-buildings-cars-May-2017.html

I love the part where the people who were caught don't even live in the neighborhood - or the city for that matter. Doylestown is a pricey rural suburb where the residents own trophy horses, own beach houses and ski the Poconos.
Ironically these perpetrators seem to meet their own targeting criteria, why didn't they save themselves the gas and bust up their own town?
I'd actually have sympathy if the local residents were behind it all.
Gentrification is a very complex social issue and breaking a few windows and making graffiti won't do anything helpful.

The face of the modern anarchist:
Comes from a privileged upbringing, has an art degree from a prestigious university, walks dogs part time and lives off the parents well into adulthood. Does not get charged with resisting arrest when caught in the act of civil disobedience.

I actually moved out of this neighborhood last year upon getting engaged to my better half and moving to her house. Frankly I'm surprised my former neighbors didn't beat the living daylights out of these fools.

Sad... and you are absolutely spot on in your analysis.

One thing that stands out (and has always stood out to me) though:

"...and lives off the parents well into adulthood."

Therein is the root of the problem.  Not the entire one, but a huge underlying cause.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was out of the house as soon as I grabbed my HS diploma.  IMHO, too many parents coddle their kids and let them sponge.  This is NOT a liberal thing (sorry pubs), but a generational thing.  I know several right leaning and left leaning parents that have paid for their kids school and let them come back home to "find themselves" and pay for their cell phones, their food, their clothes, transportation - everything.  That's not to say you should shun your kids, but actually parent them.  Show them how to be self sufficient. Give them a nudge and let them go.

I see way too many helicopter parents.

Yes, the responsibility ultimately falls upon the kids - but if you raise a spoiled kid - they grow up to be a spoiled adult.

Here's a bunch more of these coddled brats who apparently braved driving through the traffic between the suburbs and downtown to block a busy street here for no apparent reason

I'm ashamed right now. Reason is I used to date the female in the center of the picture. Even with the mask I positively recognize her.
She's 40, claims to be an artist despite never actually making any, has a part time job in a daycare to supplement her monthly allowance from her MOTHER that she lives off of despite the fact she has a degree in mathematics from MIT.
She came to the East Coast by way of San Fran where she was supposedly deeply involved with the underground punk scene. yet she doesn't know who Jello Biafra is.
One day when I was in great pain from my pilonidal cyst when it got infected she refused to go down to the corner store and buy me a pack of smokes because she doesn't believe in supporting the tobacco industry. I limped down to the store best as I could and 1st thing upon getting back to my house I called a friend for a ride to the hospital. I told her she better be cleared out of my house by the time the ER discharges me. I spent the rest of my day getting my butt sliced drained and packed with gauze and it was a much better time than I ever had with that woman and her stupid ultra-super-liberal political ideals. I was relieved to find her gone afterwards.
I'm actually not surprised to see her involved with this stupidity. It's possible she was involved with the vandalism in my old neighborhood too. She might even be the one who chose the neighborhood because everytime she came to visit me there she was gripe on and on at great length about all of the gentrification.

I'm 45 now, this was all a few years ago. honestly if I was 40 and still relying on an allowance from my mother (RIP) I would do the world a favor and donate my body to science before jumping off of the Walt Whitman bridge.

And they make pepper balls for them.
But this is an escalation likely to bring further escalation.

Maybe.. or,, the thugs will be dissuaded. Or, the property owners will be cowed and taught to accept the actions of vandals.
I would risk making idiots unhappy.

You mean like the certain brand of jawbreakers that are the same size as paintballs?

The whole thing is self-defeating from the start. Insurance will repair, replace property damage anyways. These people are wasting their effort and time.
If they were serious about their cause they would wait for the police to arrive and then confront them. Running away and hiding after the act is cabbage night pranksterism and infantile. If you really believe in your cause then step up to the barricade, put on your gas mask and take what comes next. Otherwise go back to the broad estate and have the servants bring you organic tea while you watch V for Vendetta for the 1000th time on your 85" TV out on the veranda you gutless wonders.

No, pepper balls, like pepper spray except they explode and you're in a cloud of pepper.

I Believe, two views on that, ‘paintball/escalation’.

One.   A  ‘Responsible’ person, will know that their are, reactions, to actions, they do.
Then, when that,  reaction, which they consider is UN-desirable, occurs.
They won’t do that again.

Two.  A person, with no morals, responsibility, has been pampered all their life.
2A.  They will just quit, because it is boring, and they got paint on their favorite blue jeans.
2B.   They will rally and say:  “We will Show Them”.

“Can’t teach a old dog, new tricks”
Everyone has heard it, but it is FALSE !
It can be done, just harder to do.
It is  MUCH  Easier to teach a Young dog tricks.

So, ’teach’, children,
 Hard work gets rewards.
     or
Don’t have to work, because someone else will pay.

Pick one, each has it’s own consequences.

For the, ‘old’ dogs, that will take longer, learning a new trick.
Next, Paint-balls.    If it continues.
Round them up, and throw the book at them in JAIL.
If it, Still, continues,   Clean up the Gene pool !

On the same day the vandalism took place there was also an arson of new construction houses in another part of town.
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/Point-Breeze-fire-ruled-arson.html

The police are investigating a possible connection between the two incidents.
So these people are potentially arsonists in addition to vandals.
I'm sure their efforts have permanently stalled the gears of gentrification forever. Or until insurance pays for the damage and the construction companies pick up where they left off in a few weeks.

Unfortunately yes. The friend who introduced me to her has confirmed having seen the picture himself, it's her alright. I hope for her sake she's not in cahoots with the arsonists/vandals too.

actually it was a whole string of them. I had 3 Leo women in a row. Aries and Leo is like fire and gasoline. It's like a fireworks show grand finale in the bedroom. But unfortunately it's like the worst Jerry Springer show ever on repeat until somebody loses their sanity completely outside the bedroom.
This one was the last of the infernal Leos
