Title: Gas filler cap
Post by marekbuk on 06/16/17 at 12:43:31

my petrol cap has a broken locking mechanism - one of the 2 plastic locking catches has snapped. Has anyone used an after market filler cap that fits the Savage!

I don't think it's plastic .maybe pot metal, but have you considered using it for a pattern and making one out of steel.a piece of flat  bar some grinding /filing and drilling a hole for the stud on the lock should do it.

You didn't mention what year it was, but it appears that some of the UK bikes had an evap system and used a different cap.  Looks like either one is pretty expensive.  You might try a local wrecking yard.   :-/

Now that's a good idea - keep me out of trouble - down In the garage. Probably be able to use a chunky piece of aluminium that I have in my 'bits of metal box'

I've just checked a new price - £95! Definitely going to make a replacement catch

The Cali evap caps are almost identical to the standard cap.
The only dif being the exhaust vent is closed.
So, no matter the year, the locking mech should be identical.

The OP was looking for a replacement cap.  Repairing the old cap won't be an issue, which he's now considering.  Which cap you use really doesn't matter either, as long as pressure can vent out of either the vapor canister, or the gas cap.  What he may have to pass as far as inspections in the U.K. is the other reason I mentioned it.
