Title: Even worth trying to fix?
Post by HillSavage on 07/23/17 at 18:45:21

Hey all,
Finally got into my motor, things do not look good.  As you can see the melted valve on the piston.  Any advice here?  I don't have much money and the motors that I am seeing are like 6-800 bucks.  Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.  Any thoughts?

Cylinder and head condition is what you need to consider.
And Why did it do that?

You might be able to buy a whole top end, head, jug, piston.

Looks like a new top end for this engine. Dave has a head for sale in the marketplace. From there you'll need a new cylinder and piston kit. A big bore kit would be the way to go because it is less expensive then an OEM kit.

A used replacement engine is probably less of an initial investment, but you don't know what problems you are buying until things start to go wrong.

The budget may make the call.

Year model can be a problem.
Not insurmountable, but not having to swap parts to get it to spark is nice.

Get some good clear photos of the head, both the chamber and the cam bearing surfaces.
Your piston is toast but I might like to take a look at it.
Check your cylinder closely after you have wiped it out really well and do it out in the sun light...you get a much better look that way.

How many miles were on the engine ?
Did your cam chain crap out on you ?

I believe I have all the parts you need, not new but good used ones if you want to save a LOT of money.

PM me and we can talk about reviving your engine.

In the picture is the piston all the way to TDC on it's stroke. If it is your rod is also bent therefore you would need a bottom end also.

See if the piston goes all the way up to top of bore.  :o

Can you say: LEAN

Or: 10,000 rpms in 7,000 rpm engine then missed a shift

Or: BOTH

:(

Check warranty and/or bank balance !

Read that in a trouble shooting section in a old BSA manual.

Get the crap off the piston before you move it.
Don't despair. A calm assessment of the situation is in order.

Post some better pictures of the cylinder and head. I want to see the top of the piston after you chisel all that scrap metal off. Did it run out of oil and swallow the valves?

That looks almost as bad as what I am dealing with. P.O. got carried away with gasket goo and blocked all oil to the top end. But I found an engine from a low mileage wreck with a busted case. Low enough miles to have only had its first oil change before the accident. Swapped the cases and when finished I will have an essentially new engine.
