Title: Even worth trying to fix? Post by HillSavage on 07/23/17 at 18:45:21 Hey all, Finally got into my motor, things do not look good. As you can see the melted valve on the piston. Any advice here? I don't have much money and the motors that I am seeing are like 6-800 bucks. Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope. Any thoughts? |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by Gary_in_NJ on 07/23/17 at 19:09:08 Looks like a new top end for this engine. Dave has a head for sale in the marketplace. From there you'll need a new cylinder and piston kit. A big bore kit would be the way to go because it is less expensive then an OEM kit. A used replacement engine is probably less of an initial investment, but you don't know what problems you are buying until things start to go wrong. |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/23/17 at 19:20:22 The budget may make the call. Year model can be a problem. Not insurmountable, but not having to swap parts to get it to spark is nice. |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by LANCER on 07/24/17 at 02:03:16 Get some good clear photos of the head, both the chamber and the cam bearing surfaces. Your piston is toast but I might like to take a look at it. Check your cylinder closely after you have wiped it out really well and do it out in the sun light...you get a much better look that way. How many miles were on the engine ? Did your cam chain crap out on you ? I believe I have all the parts you need, not new but good used ones if you want to save a LOT of money. PM me and we can talk about reviving your engine. |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by Ruttly on 07/26/17 at 12:33:01 Can you say: LEAN Or: 10,000 rpms in 7,000 rpm engine then missed a shift Or: BOTH :( |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by Ruttly on 07/26/17 at 12:36:09 Check warranty and/or bank balance ! Read that in a trouble shooting section in a old BSA manual. |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/26/17 at 12:40:12 Get the crap off the piston before you move it. Don't despair. A calm assessment of the situation is in order. |

Title: Re: Even worth trying to fix? Post by Savageman on 07/26/17 at 12:53:48 Post some better pictures of the cylinder and head. I want to see the top of the piston after you chisel all that scrap metal off. Did it run out of oil and swallow the valves? |

That looks almost as bad as what I am dealing with. P.O. got carried away with gasket goo and blocked all oil to the top end. But I found an engine from a low mileage wreck with a busted case. Low enough miles to have only had its first oil change before the accident. Swapped the cases and when finished I will have an essentially new engine. |
