Let's say you were going through west Texas and blew out both front tires going over a cattle grate.  You didn't have any water, cell phone, so on.  Some rough necks happen to be driving by from the oil rig down the road. They would get you two new tires and get you on the road for $2,500.  Would you just happily hand the cash over with no hard feelings?

Best regards,

Good article, thanks.

I would suggest that all of us on this forum agree with the principles of this article 100% even if, after reading, some would claim strongly to disagree. We all act this way in our own individual lives.

We are all expert economists without even realizing it. With limited supply or high demand, we all "raise our prices" or we make a value judgement to deliver goods or services at a loss.

Lot more information needed.
Lots of  Questions.

Basically, it is, ’their’, and, your’,  choice.

First, Why did the roughnecks, ask a high price?
Were you driving a Lamborghini, wearing top of the line designer clothing?
Were you, driving a beat up 80’s PU, and had a, ’T’, shirt/jeans, and boots on?
Did they,  ‘Profile’,  you, on your looks/car/clothes/attitude ?

Next, you:
Do you, ‘HAVE’, to get some place,  ’NOW’ ?
Can you wait until someone else comes along?
Can you walk, (have things necessary to walk) ?

So  many unanswered Questions.

As to the, base, of the idea.
(Say Water bottles in a impending Hurricane)
       Yea.
What are,  ALL,  the  Possibilities,  ?????
Is it, ‘Mom/Pop’, with a case of water in their cart?
( Who have decided to ’sit out the storm’)
Is it someone, with 20 Cases in their cart,
(Who you firmly Believe), will SELL  them for 10.00 a bottle ?

We, are,  ALLOWED, to,  ‘PROFILE”.
(Unlike the TSA, who is,  P.C.), 'correct'.

Charging a, tiny bit more, for the, ‘Mom and Pop’,
and charging a,  Whole  Bunch  more, for the, ‘Gouger’.

YEA.   ’Common Sense’.

The  BIG, Problem is, the 15.00 a hour, DFI, behind the counter !

They do,  Simply,
What their, TOLD  to do !

There are people who can be called.
The market decides the price.
When service providers are scarce, services cost more.
Nobody is going to be cheap.
But there are options.
And, since the rescuers aren't risking their lives to save you, and, you're not in fear of death, the Demand for the service isn't sheer desperation, so, the victim isn't desperate, the heroes aren't risking much,, typically, that's when people just help each other.
