While such markets are typically set up to help combat “food deserts” in low-income and minority communities, the academics argue that they instead “attract households from higher socio-economic backgrounds, raising property values and displacing low-income residents and people of color.”

Collective ignorance, or just plain azz stupid?

I guess we need a new law saying we can't have these "farmers markets" anymore, BUT HEY, its not because that some one gets offended, it the property value thingy why ::)

I haven't paid much attention to the race demographics of local farmers markets but I do see the price point argument.

I grew up in agriculture, organic is more expensive due to yield loss, then non-organic is cheaper, then huge farms that sell to large markets like Safeway, Wal-Mart etc. are cheap, lastly a box of frozen burritos is by far cheapest.

Farmers markets are typically in the top tier of expense, organic and locally grown. If someone is making minimum wage that box of frozen burritos will feed them longer than the 4 tomato's they can get at a farmers market.

My wife is Mexican, but I bet she would even have a hard time getting burritos to grow if she planted them...... :-[

Do you believe we will always have a bottom rung of the ladder?

Do you believe its not fair?

Do you think goverment should raise that rung so all are on the same level?

I lived poor. My entire wardrobe would fit in a grocery sack at one time. I never complained about the places I couldn't eat. It was never the fault of racism or some grand hateful buncha meanies. It was 100% my fault.
When people own it , then THEY are empowered to fix it.
While they are victims, they don't have control.
