I wanted to powder coat my gas cap and was wondering, when I remove the 2 screws on the underside ofthe gas cap the plastic casing comes off but I can't seem to remove the lock itself. If I was to powder coat the whole cap,minus the plastic casing, and bake it at 400 for 10 minutes do you think that would damage the lock?

Yes it probably would. Why not just paint it? The lock tumblers are soft metal.

Can you mask it?
you won't want to overspray in the cylinder or keyway... hard to get key in... may lock up the pins... won't turn... etc.

Yea, I can mask the key hole with high temp tape so am not worried about getting powder in there and locking up the cylinder with paint, I am just worried about damaging the lock from the heat when I bake the paint at 400 degrees for 10 min.

Ideally I wanted to powder coat it if possible, rather than just paint it, because I would like it to match some other things that I have already powder coated

as an alternate option, does anyone know if it is possible to remove the lock from the cap temporarily so I can powder coat it, and if so how because I couldn't figure out how to?
