Title: Spark across plug gap... without engine rolling ov
Post by madmikesmech on 08/23/18 at 14:34:01

That's right you read the title correct!
I have a non running '86 Savage, it was one of a pair of garage finds, picked up last summer.
I removed the carb for cleaning, the battery was as expected DEAD. So I put my CHARGER/BOOST on it, spark plug out of cylinder, spark plug wire connected, thought I'd check for spark too while I was going to see if it would roll over with the starter. As soon as I turned the key to run, the spark plug sparked across the gap, continually until ignition switch was turned to off position, WITHOUT rolling the engine over. Needless to say I kinda freaked out!! Turned ignition off, and IMMEDIATELY disconnected charger.  Ideas?

Turn the motor a bit,
Retest.

Recommend you oil that jug before you start running the piston up and down.

I'm thinking like you, that the position sensor is sitting in the Goldilocks position.

Good call justin O guy2[ch128077]
, last year when I picked the bikes up, I used fogging oil in both bikes cylinders, thru the spark plug hole, let em sit a day or 2 and then put trans in 2nd gear and slow rolled 'em. Did the same thing just prior to this experience. Thanks for the concern tho ;)
You guys think the engine just happened to stop in the location that the  the positioning sensor contact points are just so lined up that they are sparking and cause the engine ain't rolling it just sparks?
You can't write the stuff that I have happen!!!! ;D
Makes sense.
Thanx!
Mike

If it has or hasn't stopped in the 'Goldilocks position' it's the first thing to try. Not that I have any other explanation.

It's in the book. Oddly, not in alphabetical order. It's after the missionary position.
The Snow White position is something else..
