Title: I changed my oil. Post by norm92de on 10/05/18 at 16:31:58 I changed the oil. I have been using Mobil 1 10x40 synthetic in my Savage. When I changed the oil to Rotella 5x40 synthetic the RPM dropped 200 RPM from an indicated 1800 to 1600 RPM.?? Any comments. I accept the fact that my Tach. may not be spot on but it seems odd. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by norm92de on 10/05/18 at 21:30:58 Justin, No. It is Rotella 5x40 synthetic T6 CK4. It seems strange even if the tach. is off a bit which I suspect. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/05/18 at 22:11:14 You should put the old oil back and see what happens. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by Gary_in_NJ on 10/06/18 at 07:05:57 Probably unrelated. Just thinking out load...I'd confirm the amount of oil in the system. Too much oil, or the wrong filter, would increase pumping losses. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by norm92de on 10/06/18 at 08:15:57 I thought about oil quantity but I put in two quarts and used a Suzuki filter just like the previous one. The oil level was normal before draining. I will be riding tomorrow morning so I can se if it remains the same. It has always consistently shown around 1800 RPM which is probably indicating a bit optimistically but it doesn't sound high. Atmospheric pressure is the only other variable I can think of. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by norm92de on 10/06/18 at 08:22:12 Justin, I am willing to invest in a couple of quarts of Mobil just to prove a point. It only takes a little while to drain and refill. I can reuse the new filter. Very puzzling? |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/06/18 at 10:08:12 I was kidding. You'll never know for sure what happened, because the experiment can't be repeated. The oil and filter are gone. I would be happy as long as it's running right and in no danger due to low oil pressure, etc. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by batman on 10/06/18 at 10:23:37 Did the Mobil oil contain moly ? Your 1800 rpm idle is a bit high anyway. |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by norm92de on 10/06/18 at 10:39:05 I'll admit to being OCD. BTW I would love to know the actual oil pressure. Anyway, I will change back to Mobil to see if it makes a change. I am almost certain that the old oil was not contaminated with gas since I run the engine dry when I park the bike at home and almost never park anywhere else. If I did I would still turn off the fuel. I wonder what happens to oil after 3000 miles in an engine? |

Title: Re: I changed my oil. Post by norm92de on 10/06/18 at 10:50:11 Batman, I don't think it contains Moly it is certainly approved for wet clutches JASO etc. I suspect that after 3000 miles the viscosity had changed a bit. Who knows? Both filters were Genuine Suzuki so should have generated the same back pressure. The engine sounds very nice at that indicated RPM. At least she never complained to me. :) |
