Title: GM
Post by T And T Garage on 11/26/18 at 14:46:16

Tommy Wolikow remembers the day he became a donald trump supporter.

He hadn’t previously paid attention to politics, but in July 2017 he went with his mom and aunt to a trump rally in Youngstown, Ohio, where the president essentially promised to save his job.

“Let me tell you folks in Ohio and in this area, don’t sell your house,” trump said, to applause. “We’re going to get those jobs coming back, and we’re going to fill up those factories or rip them down and build brand-new ones. It’s going to happen.”

Hmm, not-so-much, huh trump?

“I believed what he said, and at that moment it turned me into a Trump supporter,” Wolikow said. “It made me feel that he wasn’t lying and he was being honest.”

Yeah, that's understandable Mr. Wolikow - he's a professional liar.

By the end of this summer, Wolikow’s enthusiasm for Trump had faded, so much so that he attended counter-rallies organized by Good Jobs Nation, a union-backed worker advocacy group that has been calling attention to U.S. companies’ habit of offshoring American jobs.

“It’s really hard to be a Trump supporter at a time like this,” he said.

No sh!t....  But there are still plenty of gullible people out there.

If you think GM's decision had anything to do with the current President, you are monumentally ignorant and you should probably stop talking. This story is being spun that they are closing plants in this city or that city because that's the media's way of damaging Trump. Like our fool TT here, they publish a quote from a single individual in an unfortunate spot to paint the image of widespread uneasiness. (funny they never prominently present the loss an Angel Mother feels, but that's another story) .

GM is closing plants making cars whose appeal is waning and sales are going no where. It's the normal course of business and while unfortunate, it happens.

If you want to do something about it, go buy a LaCrosse....otherwise, shut up.

Trump is already working on getting them to retool and bring some overseas production back.
But when he saves their as s, it won't be anything he did, but it's his fault sedans are not selling.

Again, it's got nothing to do with the tariffs, huh?  You may want to check yourself.

I'm not a fan of Buick.  Maybe trump should promise things he can't deliver on.  That would make more sense.

Yes.  Passenger cars have been losing market share. The last three new cars I've purchased are one truck, two SUVs. My wife bought a new Beetle just because she wanted one. I can't remember the last passenger car we bought.

My guess is the top 5 best selling cars the past couple years are SUV's or Pickups. Maybe the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry slips in there, but I'm guessing not. Look it up.

GM might blame it on rising cost to save face, but the reality is smaller cost increases due to tariffs wouldn't matter if people wanted those cars.

absolutely the economy is very complicated. just as long as you've NEVER blamed Obama for the economy under him, then it wouldn't be fair to blame Trump for the economic decisions companies make under him.

fair enough?

this is kind of how I see it, Trump and republicans bend over backward to give the rich and corporations everything they want to encourage growth, they reduce regulations, they give them money via tax cuts, (and screwing over medicaid, medicare, ss, and other welfare programs to seem "fiscally responsible",  they cut banking regulations so they can get money easier and quicker, etc...  and yet, the economy does what it does....

the democrats want to increase QUALITY of life and support measures along those lines, are they right on with their cost/benefit analysis... maybe not, but they are trying to serve the people, and occasionally they try to appease the corporations, but for the most part they know the economy is going to do what it does, and they do try to move somewhat slowly as to not burden the economy too much, or maybe they move slowly because of partisan opposition, idk,

now, DON'T IGNORE THIS:

the above are two generalities, neither is even 80% accurate, yes, there are very corporatist democrats that will just do what their donors want, and there are principled republicans that see an abundance of overspending in our government that they'd like to streamline.

and yes there are more differences than just that, but as far as an economic view, I think that's fairly fair.  The economy is going to do what it does, you can either kiss up to corporations and screw us the people, or you can protect the people and risk losing corporations.

And to be fair, I'm not demonizing Trump for renegotiating trade deals or addressing other economic issues, like currency manipulation, NAFTA 2.0 was probably about due, not sure it really did much though, but it's progress, But his tactics of tariffs is crap, and his tactics of being rude to our allies is crap, and his isolationist/nationalist BS is terrifying.

you can either kiss up to corporations and screw us the people, or you can protect the people and risk losing corporations.

I would suggest this sentence represents a major flaw in your thinking / philosophy.

Have you ever worked for a poor person?
Is there a successful socialist nation? (a nation that 'protects the people' at the expense of corporations / business?)
A nation run by capitalist according to your philosophy should demonstrate an enormous income gap while a nation run by protecting the people should demonstrate a equitable income range. Is that true?

and that flaw, as I said, which you seem to have ignored, even after I told you not to, is a generalization, of course there is nuance and it's more complicated than just that, UNLIKE YOU AND YOUR ILK, I actually understand that the devil is in the details and it's not all just black and white

yes, I work for poor people all the time, they buy the product we make at my company, they are our customer, they are our boss.  without people poorer than your CEO buying whatever is manufactured, YOU DON'T HAVE A JOB.

yes, Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, the UK,  etc...  they all pay health insurance, they all pay college...   NO ONE is asking to be Cuba or Venezula, which are DICTATORSHIPS not democratic socialist you have no idea what you are talking about, learn something besides your far right wing conservative talking points.  can you? do you even dare try?

and again YES, in Europe the income inequality is much more fair

That's a suitable explanation for a 5th grade civics class, but its not really a valid point in this discussion now is it?

You work for a rich guy, I work for a rich guy. When he gets richer, I get richer. I don't care how much money he makes, I only care how much I make. If I'm not happy, I go find another rich guy to work for. If it were my thing (which its not) I'd figure out something I could do and be my own boss.

no, you're in 1st grade still!!!

jeesh

the only way I get richer, is if the COMPANY GROWS buy selling to MORE POOR PEOPLE.  the richness of the owner of the company I work for means NOTHING to my bank account.

Title: Re: GM
Post by LostArtist on 11/29/18 at 09:08:32

GM isn't laying people off because they're losing money, they had a good year in profits this year. it's not about making money, it's about the future of the company and the GROWTH they want, they cant' get that growth from the plants they are closing, their shareholders all made MORE money this year than last, yet they didn't trickle it down did they?  no, they shut it down and laid off 50,000 people

this idea that rich people trickle down their "excess" money on those that work for them, or that the little extra they spend on yachts and luxury goods actually motivate the economy needs to die, it's ludicrous and not based in reality AT ALL.

encouraging investment encourages GROWTH, that's the only way, not blanket tax cuts in the hopes and prayers that these people have some misguided guilt complex that they have to trickle it down on their subordinates

from their profits they've made from selling to POOR PEOPLE, and I'm not against TARGETED tax cuts, tax cuts on dilapidated property in inner cities or anywhere, or tax cuts on cutting edge technology that's untested and risky to invest in, or tax cuts on machinery needed for whatever, tax cuts for company sponsored education plans,  etc... and a lot of those already exist, so it'd just be a matter of changing the numbers to help encourage those buys by companies.

and I'm for having our business taxes be competitive with other nations so I wasn't against lowering the business tax rates, just how it was done, by paying for it by screwing the lower and middle classes.

but again, lets get rid of this trickle down BS idea, the rich and companies don't just give to the poor out of the goodness of their hearts, they need a return on their investments
