Title: Don't have to know it all........ Post by raydawg on 02/05/19 at 07:51:44 Ya know it sure is great to be a know it all...... You can take the attacks on you, by minimizing others who challenge your beliefs, too cool, huh......NOT. You are playing a fools game. I am asked about my reasons to believe, all the time. I am asked to explain stuff. I can't. Yeah, it would be cool to be a know it all..... But ya know what, I wonder.....can you answer a question, that was not asked in earnest? :-/ When the game is all about SELF PROMOTION, while denying it, thinking you've fooled them, who I wonder really stays ignorant to truths? Anyway, this quote from a great man explains faith of believing waaaay better than anything I could concoct ;D Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. - Martin Luther King, Jr. Have a AWESOME day everyone! |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by Eegore on 02/05/19 at 16:36:06 I think its the same as asking someone how a part on their car works. Some know, some don't. What is interesting though is that when it comes to religion the person who doesn't know tends, in my experience, to take the question harder than the person who asked. |

Hey thanks for the reply, interesting input..... :) As to the car part/work, let me try and make a correlation. Let say I have this car, but I know it is not up to the ability of what I need to use it for.... So I take it in to be modified with different parts. Now I know what I want/need it to do, yet I don't know the necessities needed to make it happen, thus I have to trust someone else to do it. After the modifications to the car, I drive it away, and indeed, it is able to do what it wasn't able to do before.....same car, just new stuff :) Now you have the same car, but you don't need it to do the same thing, so..... :-/ We all have different lives, tho much the same, lots different too. Is your car right, mine wrong? As to your second observation...... I kind of addressed that in my first post....was the question even sincere, or was it a gotcha? That mindset and behavior is not beholden to any religion, belief, or..... As folks who are insecure in the first place, of who they are, is the root cause of "taking it harder" as in your experience. Me, personally, I welcome honest and sincere questions about my faith, the bible, etc, and I am no scholar or whiz, and my drinking days were most defiantly triggered in part to insecurities in me. I figure a sincere person can help me even understand my own beliefs better, if I am truly honest in looking at their questions..... But again, if we are talking about how someones faith, meets their requirements to their needs, like that car part, then I wonder, is there a definitive answer that can satisfy the query? |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by MMRanch on 02/05/19 at 20:52:20 I've attended at least one Bible Study a week for the last 25 years and still don't know all the details. Really , unless a person can understand Hebrew then all we have is a "translation " or general idea of the Old Testament . You know that Hebrew is a TINY language that rely s more on sentence structure more so than word definition . That being said , some of the more resent translations make a lot of sense. Like the Hebrew word : hayah is a prim root word that in English means "be" or "become" , or "come to pass" . Well this is the word that in the King James Version tells us that the world WAS created Void. Well , nothing could be further from the truth. Science has been telling us for a long time that there was a "World Wide" event that wiped out the Dinosaurs and made a mess out of the world . If you take the time to read :Genesis 1:2 Then use the "real" meaning of the word that is translated as WAS then you will see that in reality the world BECAME void according to Moses who wrote in Hebrew. Well , that is what the evidence points to also . It seems that part of the problem comes from the fact that in the early 1500's (when the printing press came about) "nobody wanted to "piss-off" the pope" . Even now its almost HERESY to speak the words I just wrote. In the words of an old rock-n-roll song : "The word of GOD is not that bad !" ;) No , I don't know it all ! But ..... I learn when I can . 8-) |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by raydawg on 02/06/19 at 08:03:31 Well I am sure most folks have heard the bible referred to a "living bible"....yes? I know personally for me, each time I have read through it, not from front to back, that is hard, but in a study plan of "through the bible in a year" where you get the OT, the NT, and psalms & proverbs for inspiration, independently .....each day, I have found new meaning personally, to ME, from a certain verse/scripture....that I did not "get" on previous read through(s). I believe its because my wisdom and knowledge have changed, not that the bible has changed..... Who of us still think and behave in their present age, as that they did even a decade ago? Sure, there are set, or certain undeniable truths in scripture, that is where much of the present day psychology realized its behavioral goals in folks, how we "get there" we where it differs on many issues and beliefs, yet, the GOAL is STILL the same. Shakespeare borrowed much of the themes he wrote into stories, based on that which is rooted in the bible..... Much music as well, has sprung from that of the bible..... David was a real rocker, the dude use to dance and sing walking down the streets nekked ;D Its not what we KNOW that makes us people that can love, no....but what we SHARE, of ourselves, that makes us loving creatures.... And love too, is so hard to define, capture and hold, for that very action will keep it from thriving freely. If you got anger and hate in your lives, if it takes up a significant time daily in it.....you spend time justifying it at trying to prove others wrong, you are not sharing, loving, or living, to what life is meant to be..... And that is a choice each and everyone of us must make for themselves, regardless if you read the bible, the New York Times, or whatever, its your gift to yourself, the resulting attitude, outlook, and just simple joy, of living life on its terms, daily :) |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by MMRanch on 02/06/19 at 11:09:58 Matchless G11 Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina (1615) The Church had already started to forbid Galileo’s teachings, especially anything that supported Copernicus. However, in 1623, a new pope, Pope Urban VIII seemed to be more liberally minded, and he allowed Galileo to publish his great works on astronomy – supporting the ideas of Copernicus. However, after the publication of Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, conservative elements within the Church sought to attack Galileo’s beliefs and writings. In this pamphlet, Galileo appeared to ridicule the words of Pope Urban VIII – making the Pope less sympathetic to Galileo. As a consequence, Galileo was arrested and imprisoned for several months. He was convicted of heresy and was forced to recant his beliefs. One apocryphal story relates to how Galileo, after recanting his scientific beliefs, muttered under his breath – the rebellious phrase: ................................ Here is the rest of the story . https://www.biographyonline.net/scientists/galileo.html ............................................. Before the printing press the Church leaders had the only Bibles and all the power. Bibles were not in English , most were in Latin . So in translating to English ... Nobody wanted to "Piss-off-the-Pope" . The story of GALILEO is of one who did Piss off the Pope. ............................................... Here is another item to ponder : The Apostle Paul who was perhaps the world's greatest Preacher , did start many Churches and wanted to see them grow. When Paul got word of one of his Churches having trouble he sent letters to them and/or went to visit them. Paul was unmarried and these Churches were his " Baby's" . So , when Paul wrote the "Epistle's to the Churches" to his Baby's , they should be read in the same context they were wrote in. I'm sure Paul was "prayed-up" and was being guided by the Holy Sprit , but if you'll read/study his writings then its not hard to see his personality shinning through. None of us are perfect , not even Paul. Also we should take into account the world situation at the time. ;) You know the New Testament was wrote mostly in Greek , not English. I see and feel the Holy Spirit in the world , as does anybody who study deep enough. How far Man's corruption reaches into Organized Religion , that we may never know ??? :-? |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by raydawg on 02/06/19 at 14:04:05 I see and feel the Holy Sprit in the world , as does anybody who study deep enough. How far Man's corruption reaches into Organized Religion , that we may never know ??? Mike, the Spirit was the "piece of the puzzle" that made all the difference to me. I tried desperately to believe and did all the things a "good" christian is suppose to do, as instructed by preachers, elders, etc... I think now, I was a Old Testament believer, as I was baptized into the Southern Baptist Church.... a very "We are all going to hell" pretty much anyway, because I will never measure up......to what it takes to get to heaven. As a kid, I really feel it scared me so much, I wanted to hide from God, which means to hide in life......itself. Not until I, many years later, much in need of SOMETHING....., for I was at my wits end, did I get honest with God. Sitting alone by myself one late night in rehab, having watched KIDS die in front of me, from their addictions, I got REAL scared, like in SCARED STRAIGHT I guess. I readily saw only two choice in my life, as if I stood on a cliff, I jumped to the certainty of death, for over 40 years into this life of mine, it still wasn't working, no matter how much I wanted to pretend otherwise, or confront God himself.... This was the very first time in all my life of saying, "YES LORD, I BELIEVE" when in fact, I didn't......really know, I hoped. This was the first time I ever spoke truthfully to God, saying I am done "pretending". That if he was who he says he is, then he better fix me, or I will just quit this life..... 500 hundred miles away from home, with a wife and family hoping and praying for me, yet I still didn't even consider them, I just wanted this crap to end..... Yeah, sweet guy, huh ;D I told God, in no uncertain terms, I am through with me, trying to control life and circumstances, I want no part of me.... If you really want me, then take me, I surrender myself to you, my life is yours to use, I'm done.....with IT...!! Dude, I didn't even have time to consider how I was gonna kill myself..... I was filled instantaneously with such a feeling, I knew I wasn't just making it up, hoping it so.... It was as real, if not more so, than anything I have ever known, or have since, come to know, it was the gift of the Spirit. Dude....I could go on for hours, the joy, the uplifting, etc, this part of the Trinity, has done in my life..... I have heard testimony by many how they have come into this grace, and how it impacts their lives..... Mine, I wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world, but too, I appreciate everyone else's testimony into how they came into possession of God's promise.... :) All of it paints a magnificent tapestry across all aspects of life, on this planet..... I get chills just thinking about it, and its FREE to anyone, that is almost, UNBELIEVABLE ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by Eegore on 02/06/19 at 20:41:19 "I kind of addressed that in my first post....was the question even sincere, or was it a gotcha?" What do you mean by "gotcha?" To clarify: In my experience when an individual asks another any multitude of specific questions directed towards faith or religious beliefs in an attempt to understand, assess, or otherwise inquire for personal information or study, about one's religion, the person who has been asked the question is typically more invested in the outcome of the conversation than the one who asked the question. |

Title: Re: Don't have to know it all........ Post by raydawg on 02/06/19 at 21:32:00 What do you mean by "gotcha?" Asking a question under the pretense of trying to become enlightened, when in fact it was asked to trap, catch, reveal, a fallacy in what the queried offered disingenuously. To clarify: In my experience when an individual asks another any multitude of specific questions directed towards faith or religious beliefs in an attempt to understand, assess, or otherwise inquire for personal information or study, about one's religion, the person who has been asked the question is typically more invested in the outcome of the conversation than the one who asked the question. I can see the truth in that, but by no way is it absolute...... If you go to a car dealer that sells chevy's, expecting a honest answer if you ask him to compare his car with a Ford, then the naivete is not ripe for intellectual growth, regardless of the "topic"..... Thanks for the exchange! :) |
