Title: YSS Emulators
Post by hotrod on 05/01/19 at 17:24:58

Looking for any updates on the use of YSS#310 fork emulators for the Savage.  How much oil ?  Adjustments ? Ride improvement ?

The YSS are a knock-off of RaceTech's Gold Valve Emulators. I would set them up with a 140mm air gap. As far as adjustment of the valve spring on the emulator, you may be on your own. That's kind of why I would choose the RaceTech product over a knock off. RT provides support and guidance as to which spring to use and how many turns for initial fitting.

Did the YSS unit come with three available springs with different colors. If so, did the instructions provide the spring rate?

Have not ordered one yet, looking for feedback on what improvement in ride quality would be if set up correctly.

If you do not want to try emulators Bruce Triplett is a vintage suspension tuner and gets rave reviews from all his customers.  He did the forks on my Honda CRF230F and they are better than they were with RT emulators.  Others have made the switch as well.

If you have a lot of patience these can be made to work very well as we have used them in two of our bikes.

However...  Without proper fork springs for your riding weight you are wasting your time.  You MUST have proper fork springs to get rid of all that ridiculous stock preload and to achieve proper Race Sag and Free Sag.  One the springs are right you can move on to damping...

How much are the YSS knock off's? Is it worth the time to have to learn to dial them in yourself? In order to adjust compression you'll need to remove the fork cap (one at a time otherwise the bike will collapse on the forks), remove the shim stack/spacer/ fork spring and then fish out the emulator. You will loose some oil that will need to be replaced and you have to ensure that the emulator is replaced with the spring up. Not bad to do once or twice to tweek the RaceTech suggested setup..a royal PIA if you have to do it a dozen or more times because YSS didn't provide you with a good start point.

BTW, I have found that RaceTech products are usually less expensive on Amazon.

Here's a good read on the GVE:

Also, member kojones used a YSS emulator. He's in Finland and it looks like he last visited (posted) the forum xactly a year ago. While he may be able to provide his set-up, is YSS's quality control and consistency reliable enough to provide a direct relation? Parts sold to Finland may differ than those sent to the US. RaceTech is 100% consistent - and they stand behind their product with technical support. Here is kojones set-up...he used two turns to start but I don't know where he finished because he never gave us a ride review or further info beyond the install. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1522253676/4#4

How much is that YSS emulator?
