Title: Rear shock/strut question Post by Tacopimp on 07/17/19 at 13:17:45 I am trying to find online the size of the mounting holes of our shocks so I can replace them with rigid struts. I have come to 3 different answers looking online and was hoping to get some clarification. I have a 2000 Savage if that makes any difference. Thanks! |

No shocks, it's just a solid piece of metal, so they make your bike a hardtail. You should have a springer seat with a setup like this. Hope that answers your question. |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by batman on 07/18/19 at 04:52:05 Bump-steer - when you hit a bump or pothole in a curve ,the rear tire leaves the pavement ,but comes down in a different track ,somewhere to one side , changing the course the bike takes , the effect has been known to cause a change in underclothes. |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by Gary_in_NJ on 07/18/19 at 08:48:49 I thought that the OEM shocks were already rigid. |

They are but they don't provide any bump steer. |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by ohiomoto on 07/19/19 at 05:56:34 SLOW DOWN!! haha I get a little "flex" in a corner if it has a depression in it. I'm thinking the frame and swingarm on this thing isn't all that stiff. But I really don't do high-speed stuff on this thing. I'll push it a little bit on slow corners. |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by ohiomoto on 07/19/19 at 06:03:20 Also, I lowered my forks but kept the stock shocks. You lifted your back end up a bit. (Of his bike people, the back end of his bike!) |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by Tacopimp on 07/25/19 at 05:37:26 So, 14mm didn't fit. I actually had them at 14.5mm and they only make it over the threaded part of the stem. Anyone know the size of the rest of the stem where I need to get the strut over? Thanks! |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by Gary_in_NJ on 07/25/19 at 06:09:31 They are 14mm. Always have been. Is there a sleeve or bushing inserted on the shock mount or in the shock itself? |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by Tacopimp on 07/25/19 at 06:58:24 Sorry, I'm an idiot. Lol. There was some piece that I didn't get off the stem. I feel stupid. |

Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by Tacopimp on 07/25/19 at 15:32:53 On some other posts/topics I read that people used 1" steel rods to make their struts. The stem for the struts seem to be just a little bit smaller than 1". This means the the strut would hang over into where the threads are just a tiny bit. Is this ok? Should I use some locktite to keep the nuts from vibrating off? |
|
Title: Re: Rear shock/strut question Post by batman on 07/25/19 at 17:26:15 I'd file/grind the over hanging area flat and use a lock washer ,locktite and nut ( a fiber locking nut if you can find them - the type on your rear axle) the coolest struts I've seen where fashioned from two crowbars (pry bars?) the round ends facing down , bolted to the bottom shock mounts. |
