Title: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by Dave on 09/29/19 at 17:00:06 Last year Stewmills, his brother Bailey and I went to Barber on Saturday and had a great time.......it was really hot. This year I am riding down with a local friend on Thursday, and I will be at the Vintage Festival Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. Stewmills and his brother Bailey and 1 other friend will be coming up on Saturday. Anybody else going? https://www.barbermuseum.org/barber-vintage-festival/ |

Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by stewmills on 09/30/19 at 07:54:24 Current forecast is 89F daytime and 69F night. It will be a warm day, but hopefully not quite as sweltering hot as it was last year. I am bringing my wide brim hat and my camelback so I can have 'warm' water in between the $3 ice cold waters. |

Because it is the vintage festival, there are of course the Harley's but not as bad as one might think. It is a pretty diverse group of bikes. You could roll up on some old smoking piece of junk and pretty much just blend right in...there are old 2 cycle dirt bikes smoking and zooming around, etc. My suggestion is to buy tickets in advance online, and go to will call at the hotel across the street to get them. That way you just ride straight in through the "already have tickets" line and don't have to sit in the line on a hot bike ona hot day on hot asphalt. |

I thought the military had trucks and planes and boats to move their personal with? Na , Dave . He is home on leave till the last part of Oct. Then he is flying to S. Korea for a year. The Military makes you supply your own transportation if you want to do anything personal: They would have flown him from Tuscon to Seattle then on to S.Korea , but since he wanted to visit home before going to S.Korea , he has to supply his own transportation from Tuscon to home then from Home to Seattle . The military is not very user-friendly . :( |

Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by Dave on 10/02/19 at 18:33:25 I am all packed.....then I did some repacking. The weather forecast has changed. Thursday for my ride down will be 99, Friday 95, Saturday 94....Sunday for the ride home 88. It is going to be a scorcher! The low tonight in KY will be a normal high temperature for this time of year! |
Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by stewmills on 10/03/19 at 06:51:20 Yep...I am going to bring my camelback thingy for water and a change of clothes and tennis shoes to change into for the day (no, I won't need help changing). Walking around in heavy boots and kevlar pants in that heat does not sound appealing. |
Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by Dave on 10/03/19 at 18:40:57 The ride down started out fine at 65 degrees and stayed nice until around 11AM when we crossed Jellico mountain. We soon where in the 80’s and very quickly into the 90’s. The last couple of hours it was clos to 100, and often the bike gauge read 102! We rode 530 miles today. |

Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by stewmills on 10/04/19 at 06:38:08 Dave, my aim is to be wheels up around 6:30am, ETA 8:30am. Unless the area is crowded we will plan to park in the same area over by the food and bike vendors, etc. and let you know when we arrive. |

Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by stewmills on 10/05/19 at 20:49:43 Made it to Barbers and back. Spent the day with Dave and gang and we met up with Badwolf for a bit. It was ridiculously hot as expected but with the help of some faucet water and a few $4 waters we survived. It was a great day and we will do it again next year. Didn't take many photos, but I did get a few of the mx stunt bikes. |

Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by stewmills on 10/05/19 at 20:53:35 Someone said flames were shooting out of the savage muffler. Considering it runs a bit rich at low throttle and it was this hot after the 90 minute ride home, I can understand.... |
Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by Dave on 10/06/19 at 16:48:43 I made it home today....and got a bit wet in the process. It rained last night just after we got to the hotel, and I was lucky enough to get one of the 4 parking spaces under the canopy. The bike and roads were dry when we left this morning, and we stayed dry until we got about 30 minutes north of the TN/KY border. It only rained for a couple miles and we were back in the dry for a while - but it came back hard and the last 3 hours were in the rain. Traffic on I-75 is scary.....78-82 mph will allow you to ride in the center or left lane and blend in with traffic. We passed a few TN patrol cars at that speed, and they don't seem to care - wonder how fast you have to drive to get a speeding ticket? I rode 1,120 miles on the trip down and back and around Birmingham. This year I did not see any of the bike show, motocross or trials....just flea market, road racing, Wall of Death, Globe riders, Trick jumpers and vendors, and a few hours in the museum. The museum would take a full day alone! I plan on going next year for sure! |
Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/06/19 at 17:31:55 You guys didn't even Go to the bike show. You were riding around, shopping for shades. Which essplaines why we didn't Get no PITCHERS! |

JOG, it's like this... Say you're 18 years old and go to the beach at spring break for the first time. Your hormones are in overdrive and there are thousands of girls your age (LEGAL AGE) walking around in skimpy bathing suits and you are just drooling all over the place for hours on end all day long...You want to try to take pictures to remember what you saw but you are so immersed in staring at the hot barely-clothed girls that you forget you have a camera, heck, you are so overwhelmed you nearly forget your name or where you are even at...then at the end of the day the sun goes down and you start to awaken from the fog and realize it is 8 hours later. That's kinda how it is, but we are all old men now and the girls are bikes...but we still get equally confused and disoriented. 8-) |

Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by Dave on 10/07/19 at 16:53:28 For next years Barber event, I am scheming to do some things different. It was very hot and drinks were horribly expensive......20oz soft drink bottles were $5, water bottles were $4, you could get a large tea in a plastic cup for $12 that had free refills all day. Food was also really expensive with pizza slices $9- $11 each, foot long corn dog with fries $13, etc. It was basically street fair food at fancy restaurant prices - I got 2 pieces of pizza, 1 Dr. Pepper and 1 lemonade over the 11 hours I was there on Saturday and spent $39! It was so hot I was lusting for a $1.79 Slushy from the gas station! For next year I am going to take a collapsible cooler and fill it up with ice from the hotel, drinks and sandwiches from the store. (You can tell that I don't go to ball games and buy any food or drink at elevated prices). It is a fun event, the museum is incredible and would take an entire day to see everything.......maybe next year I will go a day early or stay an extra day to see the museum. I only spent a couple hours in the museum as I wanted to get outside for the fun. |
Title: Re: Barber Vintage Festival, Birmingham, AL Post by stewmills on 10/10/19 at 07:32:59 Next year I am going to hook a trailer to my little TTR110 and pull a giant cooler of ice water around that is totally free. Sure to really make the vendors mad ;) |
