does a stock carb on a 1986 model have multiple clip settings on the needle jet for adjusting low to mid range,or is it adjusted by changing the white spacer and is it different on later models

All of them are adjusted by changing the thickness of the white spacer.

some of the original '86's may have had the multiple slot type of needle.
but in any case, the slots are too wide apart to give accurate adjustment.

How wide apart were the grooves?

The only Mikuni grooves that I have seen were .035" .9MM

I had an 86 parts bike and it had a grooved needle.

I wish our bikes had adjustable needles. The white spacer doesn't thrill me.
