Title: gas tank bracket repair Post by springman on 06/02/21 at 13:07:50 I have been thinking about this for over a week. I have not had the time to repair the gas tank bracket but have had the opportunity to think about it a great deal. What if I glue a small piece of metal or other material to the underside of the tank (to protect the tank) where the bracket broke, then set the tank back on the bracket and foam it together with great stuff or other such foam. Thinking outside the box. Comments welcomed. And don't worry I am thick skinned. ::) |

Barring that I would want a piece of metal the same thickness or minimally lighter, braze the bracket and doubler , poke the holes, install the bushings ,adjust to fit if the thickness is a problem. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by ohiomoto on 06/02/21 at 18:44:10 I think I see where you are going here and I like it. I think I would probably modify the bracket so that the tank could sit on in and then use a strong adhesive to keep the tank from lifting away from the bracket. Maybe a small piece of angle iron or aluminium welded or bolted to bracket. Something that would spread the load of the tank and offer more surface area for your adhesive. 3M VHB tape would probably work for that. They actually use it to manufacture things like trailer walls and skyscrapers etc. The hardest part is getting the right version of it for the job. They probably have hundreds of variations and you might need an engineering degree to know which one to get. Not saying it will work, but the idea seems sound. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by verslagen1 on 06/02/21 at 18:54:11 I took a peak at the area... but I'll need a couple of beers to get in solution mode. ;D The back of the tank flange drops down about a half inch, you might be able to drill thru it to mount the support for the bracket. I'm not sure where they seal the flange so this may cause a leak. It's a thin section so it would be easy to weld if it did. So glue to the bottom of the tank and bolt to the back flange with a spacer between the flange and the bracket. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by MMRanch on 06/02/21 at 20:03:39 Springman There are several kinds of "Great Stuff" The expanding stuff may not be strong enough .... maybe the "Semi-expanding" is tighter foam ? On a Kawasaki KZ750 I had at one point there was a rubber cushion between the spine (frame) and the tank. What your suggesting is about the same thing. I believe I'd get the tank ready to go on and put a good squirt on the spine - then slip the tank on before it expanded and got hard. Maybe a piece of saran wrap between the tank and the foam so the foam don't stick to the tank ? Maybe a light coat of grease on the inside of the tank too (will also keep the saran wrap in place) ! That foam is really sticky and one day you might want to take the tank off again ! https://www.ebay.com/itm/184188166809?hash=item2ae2786299:g:LJcAAOSwms1eV1vp https://www.ebay.com/itm/254762071161?fits=Make%3AKawasaki&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item3b5100b479:g:aoEAAOSwvWFfmbFm&amdata=enc%3AAQAFAAACkBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%252Fn%252BzU5L90Z278x5ickkrDx%252B2NLp21dg6hHbHAkGMQw0GzuTknLBekfnGLs6h4tl9vNHyOpsVBt65v1wJkCSwrnWI%252Fb6VLq%252BvRm6cgVpeKqm7YjTxwm0ir3DhjyULdGs9dsdhu5DFOyuR7o0J3Pvj2GIiRbhhmZZea%252BKpyUBKvZ9DNTZSarq6vzlef9DLvlBW8jWIBvX%252FSuBtcJ9OBqaW%252Fg4YtJYHTdi77GGfOr5foTA2N%252BGbBh2SbPiYK5kZSxVa%252Fnb0eeEkNlRxrj6k4Ju8EHGHVMGfI0ockfVH4oZBv6OtCFCJiGzTJmLXsHeg3vHA7wLwhlt4xg%252B35ckYMNDiljzaftsDfc9PvYdz%252BDPklgWkxvk1JpfD23KnxsZXRpx2SnJPoZF5ce5jjMgLpUankI3n6736qNNqpzWSc%252F14xvybn67GEAp8zygxyvNVo0Npp14HMc942PstT1BQ2VEijCBt7K%252BrfWZdIeqPCM%252BQqpLHjCA6xuiZVsnPkihYXPZ%252FjvmfSNhT%252B9kiiJ2M4uFqSNts4Gfa2%252BZSGR6MqSCxZmp8nTJBGHFfO7ZXwmMkiXAIYfm%252B7Jbk5O7R%252FGaPl8riyyaFxCl0q51NgIYMQ8k%252B74rj2jv2YoQ6Y4b%252FOuisSEUNcjATP2IT7SS9RZ7uLuC8W7reYyfIPm4O%252FrVLCwIuDM0u9gJiRew0FH1o5RXzJBnWphrRNQIGo3wMW6Z2BXDbwrLi0TobkqDQ2%252F3xaxoaPNoqzoIIrzXgn0LsrAuu5OJfZJk7aLBc%252BIH3HJOFjHzvt7D5fF4YTXKSj83bRK%252BTU6Y6VUYqdu8gshwMrA6oA7AEeaKSGqkqzjsDd01A8wC%7Ccksum%3A254762071161967057c21c8e45d7b601f55a5bdd41c3%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Cclp%3A2334524 https://www.ebay.com/itm/273925582150?hash=item3fc73cad46:g:NjgAAOSwdzNdJ966 The hot water pipe insulation from Lowes looks like it might work ? :-? If it comes in a large enough size ? |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by springman on 06/02/21 at 20:08:38 Yep Ohio, you understood exactly what I am thinking of. Originally the piece of metal that I had thought of gluing to the tank was just to protect if from the jagged top part of the bracket rubbing and creating a leak in the tank. The idea of actually welding or brazing a cross section to the bracket (not the tank) to distribute the holding action of the foam is really good. Being lazy I was hoping to not have to take the tank off the bike but looks like I'm gonna have to do that anyway. I also figured the foam would provide a little bit more protection against the vibrations affecting the tank. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by springman on 06/02/21 at 20:12:42 Not a good picture but maybe gets the idea across. |

Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by MMRanch on 06/03/21 at 07:28:26 Its the rear of the tank where it broke ? I was picturing the two sides under the tank ! Sorry for the confusion. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by springman on 06/03/21 at 08:47:56 Yep, it is where the tank and seat meet. Versy, I guess you had your couple of beers cause that is a pretty good idea. I'll have to take a look at that more closely. Thanks. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by Dave on 06/03/21 at 10:10:43 Seriously.....take the darn thing off and get it to a skilled welder! I really can't support trying to glue the gas tank support back together. If you want to epoxy on some kind of bracing after it is welded - that likely wouldn't do any harm. The welder fellow might also see where he could weld on a brace. A diagonal brace could help to reinforce the area - but I am not sure what might get in the way. |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by ohiomoto on 06/03/21 at 19:42:23 Dave is not wrong...(is Dave ever wrong?? haha) But... My idea was closer to what Varsy drew up except I think you could just use some 3m VHB between the support and the tank. It would avoid needing a skilled welder, you won't hurt the paint, and there is no chance of blowing up the tank! |
Title: Re: gas tank bracket repair Post by springman on 06/03/21 at 19:48:16 Yeah, Dave has the more sensible solution. But we are doing an exercise in thinking outside the box. And rather interesting ideas we have come up with. ;) |
