Title: It popped and died... Post by badwolf on 06/22/21 at 10:19:52 Today I was riding along about 60, life was good, then POP and the engine died. Coasted to a stop, put it in neutral and it started right up! Put it in gear and it died, tried it again, same thing. AH-HA! The kickstand saftey switch! Traced the wireing and found it had rubbed against the belt and wore thru one of the wires. Dug out a pocket knife (yes I carry a WEAPON in a pouch on my bike) and cut the wires and tried it, same thing. Stripped the wires, wound them together and slid some plastic covering over the splice, tucked it out of the way and rode home like nothing ever happened. Moral of the story, pull off your belt guard once and a while and check those wires are nowhere near the belt. And "DON'T PANIC" and never be without your towel, or at least a rag. |

Title: Re: It popped and died... Post by Dave on 06/23/21 at 03:08:25 Now I am not suggesting you do the same as I do - but I like to make my bikes as reliable as possible. My sidestand safety switch is gone....and so is my clutch safety. This causes me no danger as I have been riding a very long time before any of these safety devices existed. My starting routine is a well established habit and it doesn't require any safety switches......it has only been modified to account for the fact that bikes no longer have kick starters: Get on bike and pull it upright, fold up sidestand, turn on fuel, set choke, turn on key and look for neutral light and rock the bike a bit to confirm it is not in gear, hit the starter button (or kick starter if necessary). When the engine fires I push in the choke lever and run the engine it at a fast idle for about 30 seconds - then put the bike in gear and ride off using gentle throttle until the engine warms up. I don't want my safety switches failing on some lonely, dark road far from home. ;) |

Post by ohiomoto on 08/28/21 at 04:35:52 Similar thing happened to my but it was because my hacky kickstand mount (that hangs way too low) hit something on the road while I was cornering. It was violent and abrupt. Luckily, but I was able to regain control quicky and rolled to stop without issue. That's when I noticed my kickstand point up towards my seat! I was able to bend it back enough to where the safety switch would function again and ride home. I've know about this issue for a while. I have just been a little careful when turning left. This time I think there was a dip in the road right at a transition on to a bridge deep into a corner and wham! :o |
