Title: Rotella Shortage? Post by Dave on 10/24/21 at 03:45:35 Yesterday I changed oil, and when I went to my oil shelf I discovered I didn't have enough. I usually have a gallon or two on hand - but a couple of months ago when I was in Tractor Supply they didn't have any Rotella in stock. So I rode up to O'Reilly's and found none. I tried Tractor Supply which is next door....none. I drove to Walmart and Auto Zone and found nothing. Finally I found one single bottle at Meijer's. It appears there is a Rotella Shortage and when I checked online - other had started to notice this in May 2021. I am going to look at some truck stops and see if I can find Rotella. Riding season is about over so I am good for this year - hopefully the supply will be restocked by next spring. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by oldNslow on 10/24/21 at 09:03:24 Thanks Dave, I saw your post this morning while I was drinking my morning coffee. I had to go to the grocery store a little while ago, so I swung by the Advance Auto Parts store on my way. I bought the last 1 gallon jug of T4 that they had. There were three 1 gallon jugs of T6 on the shelf. That's it. No quart jugs of either T4 or T6, Last time I bought oil there, that rack was full. The other racks with the normal gasoline engine oils didn't look as well stocked as they normally do either, so it may not be just Rotella. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Serowbot on 10/24/21 at 09:18:27 Ironically, I have 3 gallons stored next to my 24 rolls of TP in my laundry room... ;D |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/25/21 at 01:53:58 Last trip to tractor supply, if they had any Rotella, it wasn't what I wanted. Not sure what it was, but it was in a 2.5 gallon jug. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Dave on 10/25/21 at 02:27:42 I sometimes buy the 2.5 gallon jugs, and a few times I found some 5 gallon pails. Most often the single gallon jugs were a better bargain. Pouring the 2.5 gallon jugs into a motorcycle is also a bit cumbersome - so I keep enough gallon jugs around to allow me to move the oil into the jugs. I just changed oil in the tractor and 1 bike - I need another gallon or two to get the "Pre-Winter Storage" oil changes completed. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by sjaskow - FSO on 10/25/21 at 10:26:42 The local Wal-Mart was completely out of T6 and almost out of T4 a month or two ago when I needed oil for the Vision. However, the wife and I did a road trip this weekend and, when I checked at the truck stops we stopped at, they seemed to have plenty. Maybe Shell is shipping more to the truck stops and less to the regular stores. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by springman on 10/25/21 at 11:45:00 Thanks for the heads up. I guess I will buy a couple of gallons, if available, this week. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by ohiomoto on 10/25/21 at 15:32:59 Has anyone looked into Kirkland diesel oil from Costco?? I was there today and noticed they had it. Might have been cheaper in the store. https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-heavy-duty-diesel-15w-40-motor-oil-1-gallon%2C-3-pack.product.100665743.html https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/new-kirkland-15w-40-diesel-engine-oil.328930/page-2 |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Dave on 10/26/21 at 14:23:47 In order to get more Rotella, I had to order it online from Tractor Supply and have it shipped to the store for "curbside" pickup. Or - Amazon would have shipped me a box with three 1 gallon jugs for about $80. This will hopefully last me until Rotella is back on the store shelves. If you see some in the store and don't have a supply at home - buy a gallon! |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by zipidachimp on 10/28/21 at 23:17:24 Just checked, down to my last 2 qts, good for 2022! Cheers! no cool emojii |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Tocsik on 10/31/21 at 12:18:50 A while back I noticed my local Home Depot carried Rotella. Just ran an errand there, and they're out, too. I'll need to go by a couple Wally Worlds and look for it. The couple near me show "out of stock" online. Dang. Gonna need it soon. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by verslagen1 on 10/31/21 at 13:09:39 Thinking of you Dave, so I bought a gallon of Rot4T. Around a dozen more on the shelf in the local wallyworld. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by MMRanch on 10/31/21 at 15:10:47 Hi guys :) Hay , was it the z??pp something that got us on the Rotella thing in the first place ? I have to use T6 after experiencing the difference. I'm thinking other companies make good oil too. :-? Dave , I started using the 0-w20 oil in the truck and MPG did go up . Ya think it might work on the Savage too ? |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Dave on 10/31/21 at 16:14:57 Your truck was made to run 0W-20....and it has babbit bearings. The clearances in the engine are made specifically for the oil that they recommend in the owners manual...and on the oil filler cap. You really should run the weight of oil they made the truck for - at least until you get a couple hundred thousand miles on it. Your Savage was made to run a thicker oil....and it has roller and ball bearings (except for the cam). You can run 5W-40, 10W-40 or 15W-40 in the cooler months......and if you want you can run 20W-50 when the temperatures are really hot. The "W" rating really doesn't mean much if you are only running the engine in warmer temps - if you don't ride your bike in freezing weather the winter rating doesn't really affect how your engine starts. Once the engine is started and warmed up the "W" rating is meaningless. And......adding thick STP or Lucas really won't extend the life of your engine any noticeable amount. Modern oils are really good at what they do and they really don't need any additives. I looked at Mobil1 in O'Reilly's today - the darn stuff is $34.99 for a 5 quart jug! |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Dave on 11/02/21 at 03:47:46 I was able to get stocked up on Rotella yesterday and I am stocked up for 30,000 miles......give or take a bit. My online order at Tractor Supply got me a couple of 2.5 gallon jugs of 15W-40, and on the way home I stopped at Walmart and they had a couple of 2.5 gallon jugs of 5W-40......both places were $56 for each jug. Walmart had the Mobil1 at $22 for a 5 quart jug - significantly cheaper than the $35 at O'Reilly's! I will buy a couple of gallons of that as Deb's car. O'Reillys carries Wix oil filters and if you watch the YouTube videos where folks cut oil filters apart and inspect them - they are built much better than most filters......and when I put the Wix filter on my Vibe it was the exact same filter as the Bosch that came off. For years I was buying the Fram filters - they are very poorly made and I won't use them anymore. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by MMRanch on 11/03/21 at 08:00:19 I was in wally world last week and found Havoline 0w20 full synthetic 6quart BOX for $10.00 a box, so I bought all three boxes that were left. :) I was playing investigator on my computer yesterday and now I have a new IP address. I "reset" my "u-verse" box . This morning my computer can go to the SuzukiSavage.com site. :o Was it something I did ... or ... did our hero John find his " get around to it ? " |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Serowbot on 11/03/21 at 09:04:57 Pretty sure it was the new IP address... 8-) |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by MMRanch on 11/03/21 at 20:31:22 My best guess , YES . The day I got blocked ... I was looking at some old post about "BigZuk" , then all of a sudden I was blocked and couldn't log in no more. I think I got viewed as a threat and blocked with a : " Access Denied You don't have permission to access " .................................................................... So , if I have a hard time getting T6 oil then can't I just add some flat tapper magic to another oil . I am thinking of going to 10w30 next time to see if the MPG numbers go up . If there is no improvement then I can always just add a can of STP to thicken things up a little again. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by verslagen1 on 11/03/21 at 21:47:53 welcome back, now behave yourself. ;D |

If you can't find any Rotella T6 on the shelves - then maybe you can do what I did and order it. The Tractor Supply had nothing on the shelves for months - but I was able to order it online and it was delivered to the store in a week. I have been able to find the T4 on some shelves and it works fine as well. I am no longer a fan of adding ZDDP to oil. Too many of the ZDDP additives are not compatible with the wet clutch as they also contain Moly or other friction modifiers. Once you opened the bottle of Redline ZDDP a pink sludge would settle to the bottom of the bottle, and you could not shake it up as the layer became stuck to the bottom. I also believe the Mobil1 4T motorcycle oil is a great oil......it costs about $10 a quart....so it is about 3 times more expensive than Rotella T6. https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/for-personal-vehicles/our-products/products/mobil-1-racing-4t-10w-40 I don't think that adding STP to thicken up the oil is a good idea....using the proper weight oil will likely provide better protection. Additives take the place of the oil molecules....so adding things results in less actual motor oil molecules. (That is why break in oil has very little detergent additives and no "multi-viscosity additive"......it has more oil molecules to provide maximum lubrication). As the oil chart shows, 10W-30 is an acceptable oil viscosity to use in the Savage provided the air temperature doesn't get over 86....so I would not use it as a summer oil. I really don't think you are going to realize much of an improvement in MPG by going to 10W-30. If your engine has some wear - you could see a bit more oil consumption by going to a lighter viscosity oil......but there is little reason to expect that 20W-50 is a better oil just because it is thicker. I used 15W-40 weight as it is suitable for all temperatures. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by MMRanch on 11/04/21 at 07:53:04 Well I've got a supply of 20w50 I got on clearance at the Sloans Motorcycle shop . https://sloansmotorcycle.com/ .................... Versey , did you fix my logging on issue from your end ? I'm not 100% sure what fixed it . Hay , are you still on an extended vacation and having a great time doing it ? |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Dave on 11/04/21 at 09:10:25 I was just at Walmart and they had the Mobil 4t 10W-40 for $4.85 a quart....but there was only 1 quart on the shelf. |

Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Tocsik on 12/09/21 at 10:06:30 Everyone near me is out of Rotella. Walmart, Tractor Trailer, Home Depot etc. What are you guys doing in lieu of our favorite flavor of oil? I'm due for a change and don't have enough in my jug >:( Edit. Just called a Napa near me and they had 1 jug of T6 so they're holding it for me! I would have bought more if they had it. $25. No T4 anywhere at all. |

I was able to order 2.5 gallon jugs online at Tractor Supply. None in the store - but it just took a few days for my online order to arrive at the local TSC for me to pick up. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Tocsik on 12/10/21 at 07:14:13 Well, the oil they held for me wasn't Rotella. Not sure what the guy was thinking or hearing on the phone. I'll try to order from Tractor Supply, too. It'll be a bit of a drive, but not too bad. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by LANCER on 12/11/21 at 16:20:25 Stopped in a local store today similar to Tractor Supply and saw 4 qts. of T4 |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Tocsik on 12/13/21 at 11:46:16 Napa has T6 on a monthly special for 24.99. son of a nutcracker!!! Placed the order and not 2 minutes later they called and said there isn't any to be had. Anywhere. sorry for the false hope. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Tocsik on 12/13/21 at 11:51:51 So, since I have the synthetic in the bike, how long do you guys go between oil changes? I don't want to stop riding just b/c I can't change the oil. The weather in Denver is jut too nice! |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Oldfeller--FSO on 12/13/21 at 21:33:58 I used to change Rot full synthetic every year, but I suspect that was actually more than was needed as the oil took forever to get dirty. I put in a better filtration system with strong super-magnetic ferrous separation as an experiment, and the change interval went up to two years between changes and I changed it then because of the potential for silica build up (can't filter out finest dust particles, no tech exists to do so). So, use Rot syn and change it once every year ....... use standard filters BTW, Rot syn is impervious to any internal heat levels our Savages can make. The oil does not break down during the year, so silica build up is what really prompts the yearly oil change. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/15/21 at 13:11:29 How many miles are you putting on it in a year? Are you running speeds/RPM that make you need to add? If you add, then that is clean oil, and whatever got away was not, right? Sounds like a good plan. It's not exactly hard to change the oil, but it's not exactly fun, either. So, less is more.. |
Title: Re: Rotella Shortage? Post by Tocsik on 12/17/21 at 07:22:31 First few years I was putting over 3K per year on but the last few have been around 2K. I do need to add a little every once in a while; my freeway sprints aren't near as much as my surface roads or the occasional run up the mountains. I pretty much ride year-round but there's a month or two out of the year I can't due to temps below 25 or so and/or snow. I found T6 at Home Depot this morning so I grabbed 2 1 gallon jugs. I've been changing oil every 2K miles. It seems an easy way to protect the longevity of the motor, but it sounds like the synthetic really doesn't need it that often. IMO, the bike starts to "feel" different around 2K anyway. Shifting gets just a bit stiff and the higher RPM's feel/sound different. |
