How is that even Possible? A product so dependable,with so many features..I don't use mine except internet trawling, but there are a whole buncha things it can do that I don't even try to learn. I listen to Johnny Dollar radio shows to help me get past the tinnitus to get to sleep and cruise da web,, no apps, no alarm clock, nothing,, so much technology in a easy to use package.. It's Gottsta be easy for someone, the instructions that come with it are, IIRC,, zero.. Read what it says and walk through the setup.

At that price, if you don't really want one,, maybe you should get one and mess with it. You just might decide it's The Answer.
Mine came with the wireless charger, which sits well on a little pillow in my lap.

Amazon stuff is a way to nag you to buy stuff from them. They can sell it to you at a loss, and still make money in the long run. Like Apple they want to lock you into their ''system'' and bleed you. (Apple rips you off up-front, then bleeds you.)
Amazon tablets have no gps for some reason (to make you stay home and shop from them perhaps?) so you can't navagate with them, and no access to the Google Play Store. (again to lock you into their system). You can hack them and load the Google PS, but overall few do.

This is it. Considering the billions they make I can't fault the model.

As for not having Google Play that is like asking why Coke doesn't include Pepsi products in their sales catalogs.

Badwolf, Eegore, you can use this simple utility to get rid of Amazon junk apps off the little tablet and then you can use it to put the Google Play Store complete on to your little Amazon tablet.

No, I can't help you with the lack of a hardware GPS chip, but ...... the standard Fire mapping utility and your downloaded Google Maps areas can be coaxed to run a quarter to half-arsed off of simple cell tower triangulation using commercial (Musk) satellites.

I don't generally recommend it to beginners as it requires a greater than normal mortal level of Google-fu to get it to work mostly right ..... and it is never totally right.

Plus, I carry my cell phone with me on trips and it does have full voice and full GPS built into it. I like saying "Hey Google, navigate to the nearest Starbucks" and it immediately complies.

But using the Fire Toolbox to put the Play Store on your Fire Tablet is an easy enough to do thing.

I'm just busting to ask Someone..

What will happen to all the stuff bobbing up and down, in containers, in that environment? Will the circuit board in a Kindle even Know it was on a ship, being in a wrapper, in a box, in A wrapper, packed in with who knows how many others, in A box,?
Bicycles and such, though, they are not quite as well packaged..
Anyone have an opinion?

I doubt they are powered on.

I've never seen extremely turbulent water out where they hold ships so I imagine nothing changes. A bike in a container on one of those ships should be pretty stable, those things are gigantic.

There has been a steady improvement in the Fire Tool Box and in the Fire Tools themselves.

The Tools are still easy to use. Fire Tools are in the 25th generation now, so they have considerable tuning and powerful customization inside them.

The effects of your modifications still tend to disappear over time as Amazon sends out occasional nightly updates that overwrite your tablet over many updates. So don't be surprised when your tablet slowly becomes Stock Amazon again. Just hook up your USB cable and fix it as needed.

The life of your Fire's battery is around 4-5 years, so none of it is really endless.

Black Friday will eventually send you a new Fire Tablet with a better processor and more memory, so feel free to modernize it a bit when you get it to your house.

Hey OF, I like to tinker with computers a bit and might pick one of these up since they can be hacked to the Google environment. Does the amount onboard storage matter much? That seems to be a big determining factor in the price. Does the liliputing hack take care of the lock screen ads? EDIT - I just read a bit of the Fire Toolbox stuff and sounds like the lock screen ads are taken care of. Interesting....

Lock screen ads gone, all the trash apps you hate gone ----- issue remains that Amazon automatically tries to keep your tablet healthy by doing 100% zone replacements that, over time, turn your tablet back into a stock Amazon Fire device.

Note: it does not remove or modify your Google stuff, it just replaces the turned off Amazon stuff with a default turned on current version.

For example when this Amazon lock screen shite comes back up to haunt you, this signals me to simply hook the Windows computer with the Fire Tools on it back up by USB cable and select your own personal change mixture and hit execute. Fast and easy to do, and if you do it 2-3 times during battery life of the Fire Tablet in question it will keep all the Amazon trash at bay.

There is an advantage to some of the Fire stuff, make no mistake about it.
If you have Amazon Prime you get to read a whole lot of free Kindle e-books and a constantly upgraded crop of free movies to watch and music to listen to.

Amount of memory does matter, but if you turn off (forbid the loading of) some of the Amazon crap then the stock device has plenty of memory to handle whatever you do use.

Memory limits do say if you want to play lots of games and Google too, then some of the Amazon trash HAS to go ......

Every generation of Fire gets a bump in processor and memory capability, so this has not been an issue for my household. My wife keeps a spare 8" new in the box for when hers gets wonky on her or the battery gets too puny for words.

...... or she needs a tablet color change to spice things up a bit, you know how it goes.
