Title: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/11/21 at 20:42:02 The ebay listing for Kate (the W650) just closed and the closing bid was $3,000.00 I think the person who bought it was the guy from Houston Tx. that ask me to put a new front tire on it before selling it. They even said they would pay for the tire. So , I put a new Dunlop K-70 on the front then jacked the price up a little . I'm a little remorseful about selling Kate but ... life goes on ! I drove Kate more last year than the other two bikes put together. I wore out both of her tires in one year plus put several 100,s miles on the new back one. Don't have the $$$$ in my pocket yet but its in sight ! :) |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Dave on 11/12/21 at 02:20:23 I enjoy getting a "differnt" bike every so often to see what they are like, and then letting them go to make room for another. If you buy used and don't pay a premium.....then you can break even or maybe even make a few dollars on the sale. Kate was a nice bike to look at, and it hauled you and Marcia around Texas and Arkansas in grand style. So what next? Downsize to two bikes, get a Himalayan, buy a camping trailer? |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/12/21 at 08:55:26 Your so right Dave. I liked the looks of Kate too. And when that 650 twin got wound up to 4500 and beyond it was pulling really good ! That front tire I just put on was done the old one side at a time way. The one that went flat in Arkansas was done the "both-sides" at once way , (the tubeless way) I paid $2650 for Kate , not running and covered in dust with 20 year old tires on her. So as you might guess it took quite a lot of time and a few $$ to get her going again. But , I had a nice "FLING" with her ya might say ! ;D .................................... Yea on the Himalaya thing ... I just can't get that thought out of my head ! :-[ :-/ But I've got a nice Honda ATV Recon that is in "A-1" shape so I don't need a dirt bike at the Ranch. And I'm not sure I ever want tube tires again ? ::) I have looked at those smaller fiberglass campers , and they don't look like pulling them around would be an ORDEAL every trip. The thing is it's got to have its own bathroom , and be easy to pull. I can put the bike in the back of the truck or pull it with the Jeep and a bike rack on the rear of the camper. One big "Fly-in-the-ointment" is that we just bought the 87 acres next door . So a full-price travel trailer is not really a good idea right now. ................................... I can see fuel prices going up with no end in sight. I suspect the next thing will be some tax on liquid fuel to help pay for electric vehecles! :-? so Maybe some 85-MPG - vehicle would be nice. ??? ::) |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by ohiomoto on 11/12/21 at 14:54:52 I wished I was in the position to buy Kate. I've always loved the look of the w650. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Ruttly on 11/12/21 at 19:58:09 The fowl smell of regret hangs heavy in the air for awhile , when you sell a Good bike. But you can always buy another when the fowl smell gets too strong. ;D ;D ;D |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by springman on 11/14/21 at 16:34:45 That was a really nice bike MM. You had a good time with her and I am sure the new owner will appreciate her. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/15/21 at 20:53:35 I have been bumped off the Savage site for a few days , Im starting a new thread to tell ya about it. ............................ Hay Springman , Guess where the guy who bought Kate lives ? You may be seeing Kate around town ! More I might get paid to deliver Kate to Houston if he can't find another way. He's already paid for her and we might meet in the middle somewhere ??? , but I get the idea this guy is loaded $$$ so I offered to deliver if he covers my expenses then Marcia and I could get a road trip out of the deal. If we spent a night in Houston , I like to come by and say howdy ! I'm hoping it works that way . :) |

Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/28/21 at 15:57:13 You know what Dave ? I was just looking at that same model when I came across the XT250 . Yea , If we got the VanVan type bikes we could explore all those trails around Suches . It seems there are a lot of those BIG WHEEL machies. ........ Years ago, I had a Honda 185 Twin-Star then later a Honda 250 Rebel. I really liked ridding them , they were super fun bikes. But Those 17 HP bikes loose speed going uphill ... even at 55mph speeds. What's the chance of getting a Dual-Sport with tubeless tires ? OR Finding Dual-Sport tires for my Savage then returning to the factory gearing ? Not for "Log Jumping" , but for dirt trails. My windshield is the Memphis Shield with easy off and on. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Dave on 11/28/21 at 16:15:08 MM: I do agree that the fat wheel motorcycles are likely not as useful to you or me as a motorcycle with normal tires would be. And a 250cc bike would get the job done - but if you want good cruising speed you need a 650cc bike. The 250cc Kawasaki Super Sherpa that I had was comfortably limited to 60 mph.....and even then it sounded like it was working pretty hard. There was one event where I needed to get on the 70mph highway for about 4 miles to get home without a long detour, and the little engine sure was screaming. Maybe a 400cc bike would be a good compromise of weight vs. power. If you want a factory dual sport with tubeless tires....I believe it is going to have to be a Moto Guzzi V85 or a BMW GS. Neither choice is done cheaply. The other option is to convert the spoked wheels for running tubeless by sealing the spoke nipples in the rim. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/28/21 at 16:28:29 The other option is to convert the spoked wheels for running tubeless by sealing the spoke nipples in the rim. I've never done that , you tried it yet ? I'm 16 and 19 tubeless on the S-40 already |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Dave on 11/29/21 at 02:58:39 I have not done it - a friend of mine did it on his Triumph Bonneville. They were modern rims with the raised ridge on the beads like tubeless rims use. I don't know if you can safely use these kits on rims without the bead......although I am not sure why it would be more dangerous than having a tube - as a flat is a flat and the tire will come off the rim with or without a tube inside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPzoqi_4X7o&t=243s |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/29/21 at 03:41:17 Maybe the best thing is to use a tire with enough body so that it doesn't need air to keep it up a little. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/29/21 at 03:49:55 I've looked for dual sport to fit the 16 inch rim and it seems "there ain't no such thing" ?? The dual sport 19" is no problem. The RE 350 (20HP w/lots of bottom end) has mag tubeless rims with a 17" rear and 19" front , and a person could put dual sport tires on it ? Just observing . If it was the 500cc they had fixed up so nicely then I might have been ready to give-up the S-40 but I keeping the S-40 for now. :) ........................ So , A shipper is coming by to pick up Kate this Friday. finally ! |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Dave on 11/29/21 at 14:46:40 If you want a dual sport bike to explore dirt roads and trails - you really should get a dual sport bike and not just put dirt tires on a street bike. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/29/21 at 15:54:16 Yea I know a regular dual sport would be better , but I know two guys who took street bikes down some forest roads in dry weather with street tires without an issue. I'm not really thinking of "real-dirt bike" ridding. A case-guard on a savage would do anything I had in mind , especially if it had dual sport tires. .......... You have any thought of exploring more of those "Forest Roads" ? |

Not until I get a dedicated enduro or trail bike. I will try and go get the Honda CT90 bought from a friend in the next few weeks. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by MMRanch on 11/30/21 at 19:47:46 ;D Are we going to do the CT90 vs Trail 125 replay ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Geb_QFxp_hs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEUdI70sF7Q The first one is good stuff ! |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by springman on 11/30/21 at 21:13:05 MM, if you come to Houston definitely let me know. I would love to see you and your wife. Dave, that is cool. I always wanted a CT90 or the 110 version. And I have to admit the new 125 looks quite nice. Put some pictures up when you get a chance. |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Dave on 12/01/21 at 18:40:01 Yep, I watched the CT90/CT125 Alaska trip last week. There is a later video where Arnie cleans up the bike and rebuilds the engine after he got home. The one I am buying has a fair amount of rust on the chrome pieces. Not sure how much replacement will have to happen to make me happy with the bike.....I hate rust! |
Title: Re: I just got Kate Sold Post by Ruttly on 12/01/21 at 20:17:11 It’s patina |
