Title: Close call!
Post by springman on 06/21/22 at 07:55:57

I had a bit of a close call last night. I thought I would share the experience. I was on my way home from work, a block and a half from the house and a squirrel ran out in front of me. I was doing 20 maybe 25 mph max and I braked hard. I missed the squirrel by maybe 2 inches. But as soon as it passed I realized what would have happened to me if I had hit it. The front tire would have locked up and slid and I would most likely have gone down. The thought was a bit scary. I will not brake hard for a squirrel again and will not use the front brake if I brake at all. For me this was a bike riding lesson and hopefully it will make you aware of a scenario that you've never considered before.

Thinking of going squirrel hunting! >:( :o

Squirrels are way quicker than we are, maintain heading and maybe let off the throttle slightly and allow them to dodge you.

Tune your bike to grumble pop on decel
then you won't have to dodge squirrels, just laugh as the squirrel is propelled across the street by a brown rocket plume.

try not to fall over while lyao

OK, don't laugh too hard and don't brake for them. Works for me. ;D

I ran over a 30 pound dog once ,  "Blump - Blump " , I wouldn't have liked it  as much in a turn , but on a strait road ... "Blump - Blump" .

Well , ya missed your chance at squirrel Stew !   ::)

IDK what happened, but I tried to reply,, Ohh Well,, I'll give it another go..

I wanted to ride and explore the dirt roads south of Sierra Blanca Texas. The ride to the rig went by a few roads, and I wanted to see what was out there besides cattle. The sand had me concerned, so I asked my friend how to navigate that.

Scoot back accelerate, says he. It works. If you're on the brakes when you hit a wheel chock with a pulse, you might be in trouble. I wouldn't wanna hit an armadillo with the brakes on. I'd be inclined to step on the shifter and goose it as I slid back and yanked on it.

To try to train yourself, when you go to bed, play that situation in your head and imagine your correct response, over and over. It works. It did for me. Not exactly that scenario, but others.

I do like JOG's idea. Play in your head and figure it out.

Dave, I'll take that as a complement that you think I can learn to do the bunny hop, especially on a 600 lbs. bike. Looks like fun though.

Neal, I think you hit it on the head. That little tree rat did it on purpose! ;D

I was using this decades before I read about it.
You envision a bad situation and what your best Next Step is, if it ever pops up, you have already decided what to do.

I actually just had to study the Virginia DMV motorcycle book to get my permit. It actually mentions a similar scenario and recommends not braking as running over a small animal is easier to control than locking your tires.

You guys don't aim at Tree Rats ?  :-?

Unless I'm in a turn , then those under 20 pound critters are all fair game !! ;D

As Red Foxx once said, "I'm not wrecking my Cadillac ducking no 29 cent squirrel." I hit a rabbit once--- barely noticed. To be honest, I was on a '76 Gold Wing...
