Title: What is this, and wont' start, please help
Post by JayR on 09/29/22 at 08:30:32

ok, so I hadn't been riding and pulled her out.
I have a Mukini carb and it fuel was coming out the over flow. It was runing rough.

So, I pulled the carb and cleaned it. Since I have made it a bobber, the device below was in the way and I kept having to move it.

Now the throttle cable (yes it was a mess instead of a sweet afternoon ride) seemed to get hung up so I checked the controls. and it was fine. It was just hung up in the carb.

So - cleaned , back together, no fuel issues and....

Press the start button... NADA

So, I don't know if I messed up the piece in the picture, the controls in the throttle or burned up the starter.

When I press the start button I hear a one very low  'click' in the engine.
Not like when the battery is bad with loud CLICK CLICK CLICK.

I checked all the connections I could see. I reopened the throttle to see if any wires were jacked up.

Is there a way to test the starter?
Any suggestions?

Was in a car wreck recently and just wanted to ride, so I'm really just frustrated and I messed up something electrical.

That's the decomp/starter controller.
If it fails either nothing works or you find your bike flipped over with the rear wheel spinning.

You're getting a click, bend over and check if your decomp is activating when you push the starter button.  That indicates that power is getting to the decomp controller.  Next is to check the starter relay.  Are getting power at the starter when you push the button?

If you don't have a multimeter... get one.

Yes, I have a multimeter

How can I check the decomp? Does it have a light or led?

When I press the starter button, nothing happens but a very very faint click.

How do I check the starter relay?

Thank you

Your hand will feel the decomp engage.

Reach up under the tank, put your hand on the big canister and hit the start button.
You should feel the thing engage.
You can probably watch the decomp lever move.
Or, a meter or test light will show you it's getting Powah.
It's supposed to hit ,then the starter solenoid.
The decomp drops out pretty quickly after the the starter motor starts spinning the engine over. It just gives it some time to get everything moving so if the engine is coming up on compression when you hit the starter it won't have to struggle against that.
You can test to see if you are getting Powah to the starter motor and it just isn't spinning over.
If you find voltage to the starter motor and nothing is happening, go to the big ground on the right side of the engine, low and toward the back.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Theres's hardly anything going on when I hit the start button, it's pretty dead.

The batter is showing 12.3 volts so it's not the battery.

Last night, I jumped the yellow/black and yellow/green wire on the connector to the decomp controller to bypass the controller box. You could try that to eliminate that part of the system as a problem.

12.3V is pretty low. A fully charged battery should read 12.6 or so. Charge your battery before you do anything else.

What the battery drops to under load is crucial. I don't remember the numbers but it can be spinning the engine over but won't fire the plug.

It’s a high value, right around 11VDC. Enough current to slowly spin the engine and give you hope, but not enough current to wake up the ECU.

It's a little better than that, 10v
that the standard drop out voltage for TTL chips.
but if you have extra resistance in the line, corrosion in the connectors dropping from 11v to 10v at the TCI happens very quickly.
