Title: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 06/05/23 at 07:03:09 Well , can a person really have too many motorcycles ? I've seen video's of Jay Leno's collection ! :) I can only dream about that ... ::) As of yesterday I'm down to only ONE BIKE . Its the first time in a lot of years of not having a choice of "Which one today" ?? I sold the Guzzi to a young feller who just had to have it. He said he "decided to buy a motorcycle today" ! He saw my add on facebook marketplace - he called - I told him bring cash ! Come to find out ... He don't even have drivers license yet ! I offered to pay for 1/2 the cost of a Motorcycle Training Class for him , but he said moneys no problem ... I told him be careful and enjoy. ......... So I'm down to one , single cylinder motorcycle now , and that's OK. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 06/05/23 at 08:41:04 I would rather ride a single , it is the essence of riding a motorcycle. And maybe the best stress removing time I can spend , therapy , renewal ! Twins are cool but I prefer to just thump down the road. Nothing better than a nice day and a tank full of go juice and no place to be and a big single. Good Times! 8-) |

Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 06/05/23 at 20:22:50 ;D ;D ;D ........... Actually , the Meteor is a 2/3's power New Savage , with anti lock brakes , a fuel gauge , gear indicator , two trip sets , built in GPS , better mpg's , and a clock ! Very likeable machine , not a HOOLIGIAN machine but a great commuter machine, my last tank full returned 84.5 mpg. 50/50 -running 55-65mph or putt-putt-ing back-roads with my gal... 4 gallon tank. I'm itching for the Super Meteor to come to the USA so I can have a 5/3's power - version of the Savage |

I agree - my Savage is a fun bike to ride on the curvy back roads when I need some mental therapy. The engine is well suited to the 40-60mph rural roads and I can just leave the bike in high gear and motor along at 3,000-3,500 rpm effortlessly....some days I never use more than half throttle. For me the thrill is rounding the corners at a brisk pace - speeding down the straight sections only results in me getting stuck behind slower cars and trucks sooner. However - with the wife on the back seat and a windshield and bodywork to protect me when I get caught in the rain.....I sure do enjoy my twin cylinder sport touring bikes. A few weeks ago my neighbor and I were riding on the Cherohala Skyway and it was windy and around 50 degrees.....I was really happy I had a windshield and heated grips! I could get by with 2 motorcycles - I have the Savage Cafe' for my solo therapy rides, and I need to have a bike that Deb can ride on comfortably (A Savage is just not a comfortable bike for hauling 2 people around). Our retirement years are going to involve travel around the US and we will haul a bike with us for doing day rides. I seem to always have an "extra" bike - one that I buy because it intrigues me and/or is a good deal. These bikes amuse me for a year or two - then I sell them and wait for something else to come along. I really had a blast with my little Ninja 250, then it was a Honda CB125, 1962 Suzuki Hillbilly 80cc, then a Honda Trail 90.....and currently it is a Honda Trail 110. Having a fleet of motorcycles however is time consuming to keep them maintained properly - seems one always needs an oil change or tires! |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 06/06/23 at 08:16:41 Hoard what you can afford. I have no new bikes , my newest bike is my 2002 Sportster. Just not many new bikes that I want to buy. It’s really has impress me be fore I’m buying. I don’t need fancy electronics or a Cel phone charger or gps or abs. The only modern feature I need is a happy button. Old , stubborn ,set in my ways somebody build a bike that impresses me. Almost beginning to believe the New BSA isn’t coming here. My tracker is a great bike , just not an all day type of bike. I guess I can live with a sore as$ ! |

You should come by Carson City when you do this. We have some great mountains roads around here, and of course the Beautiful Lady, Lake Tahoe. The scenery does not disappoint! We are only 30-40 minutes from the lake. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 06/06/23 at 09:43:57 Ruttly I'm with ya on the part where the bike manufactures need to "Impress Me" with some "Old-School charm" ! I do want tubeless tires if possible !! ;) Currently the only thing I'm impressed with is the "soon to be arriving Super Meteor" , so until then my long range trips are on hold !! :P I'm taking the 350 Meteor to Suches this weekend and that involves some interstate travel ... so ... I'll get a good taste of what 70mph cruise is like on it. It's geared like the Savage is (redline 5th @ 90 something). I've had two Sportsters but they were the rubber mounted ones. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by springman on 06/06/23 at 12:51:55 MM, I can't believe you're down to one bike. :o I have to admit though, I really do want to take a look a the super meteor when it gets here. Have fun in Sucnes. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 06/06/23 at 17:59:05 I have to admit though, I really do want to take a look a the super meteor when it gets here. Have fun in Suches. ........ If its anywhere as good as the reviews then : I really like the looks of the Green ... but I'd have to buy all the touring stuff extra ??? :-/ Maybe the Blue and White with the touring package ... ::) The ride to Suches started as a South East Guzzi Enthuses monthly lunch meeting. They all have multi bikes and show up on a different one every month , so it don't matter . They have never took a after lunch ride , but the meets are always at some neat little out of the way place. Most of them camp the weekend near the lunch place , and that's what I'm doing this time. Thursday through Saturday. I wish you could join us , Hay Natchez MS is a fun ride from my end with a free campground in the middle and one more at each end !. Maybe we should move this conversation to another thread ? :-? |

Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by LANCER on 06/07/23 at 05:32:29 That is a beautiful example of a BSA 650. 1967 was the best year for performance from the Lightning/Spitfire models. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 06/07/23 at 12:08:23 I was thinking more on the lines of a nice Norton 850 , oh yeah ! One of the later models that has the happy button option ! 8-) |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 06/07/23 at 12:11:56 In metallic blue 100% OEM , tires & grips ok |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 06/07/23 at 12:18:51 The only kick start bike I would consider would be a Norton Manx Holy Grail of all thumpers ! For those of you that don’t know , Manx means (born on the isle) Isle of Man Never loose your ability to Dream ! |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 06/07/23 at 21:05:39 On vintage bikes : Back when I had the second sportster , I went to a CMA meeting and there was a feller there on an old BSA 650 (1965 ??) it was fully restored looking and nice to look at . We were going the same way home after the meeting so we rode along together for about 1/2 way when he motioned to pull over. He had been listening to the Sportster and wanted to ride it , so we traded bikes the last 25 miles to his house. First thing ... the shifter was on the wrong side ! ::) and the brake was too ! I only got them mixed up one time with a down shift instead of a rear brake. The power level remined me of the old CB350 twin I had years ago , but the vibration reminded me of a China 200cc Roketa I got rid of as soon as possible. Them old machines might have been "GREAT !" in their day , but compared to what we have now ... they are not so great anymore. In 1974 I was ridding my fairly new Yamaha SX650 to my duty station in TX , but had gone by way of Florida to meet some friends. Between Florida and South TX I rode along side a feller on a Triumph 650 Tiger. (single carb-twin) . That bike used 1/3rd less fuel than my Yamaha and could pull away from my SX650 in high gear any time he wanted too. No the SX wasn't in need of anything ... it ran great - the Tiger was just better. :) |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Dave on 06/08/23 at 09:15:37 Seems like it is BSA week here. https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/d/middletown-1969-bsa-441-victor/7629991986.html |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by bobert_FSO on 06/08/23 at 09:46:03 RE: BSA Victor. I had one in the late '80's. It was my intro into the fun of big singles. Yes, it vibrated. I could sit at a stoplight and watch the fork tubes and front wheel bounce. The best compliment I got was while sitting at a stoplight. A guy on a Sportster pulled up beside me, looked over for a couple of seconds, and then gave the the thumbs-up. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by LANCER on 06/08/23 at 10:34:10 Ruttly: Last week there was a very nice ‘61 Norton Atlas 750, ~12-15,000 mi., priced around $6-7,000. Looked almost new; ready to ride. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 06/08/23 at 12:42:21 A 61 Norton is not equipped with a happy button. Still a worthy addition ! I had a 441 too , with k70s , that bike went anywhere , sold it for $900 It s always BSA week at my house |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Gus on 06/14/23 at 15:00:29 I've developed a liking for the little Honda singles. Beginning to get a few around here. 79 CT90, 64 CT200 (old Trail 90) These two are runners. The 64 was seized when I got it but is happily bounding down the trails now. Then I picked up a 1981 Honda Passport 70. (no motor) & an early 60's c100. The c100 is a little 50cc motorcycle. It's seized as well, & the kicker is broken off. I think, though, that I've got it free but there is a bent valve or something keeping it from rolling all the way over. it'll roll back & forth now but not completely through a full rotation. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Dave on 07/06/23 at 02:19:25 Price looks nice.....not sure how wonderful this bike model is. It does meet MM's criteria for being air cooled....it does appear to have 2 carbs. https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/d/batavia-2014-triumph-bonneville-865/7639373407.html |

Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 07/06/23 at 10:39:00 There you go , that’s a great choice , even more important it’s already at the dealer. Test rip , I mean ride ::) |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 07/06/23 at 17:58:30 Just another 45 mpg motorcycle . https://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/triumph/bonneville_t100/2014 ............. This is a little more like it ! https://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/royal_enfield/interceptor/2019 Both are air/oil cooled , but one of the manufactures seems to actually care about mpg. There is a big gap between 45 mpg and 60 mpg. Yes the Triumph has more HP but either one has more than enough. Its been my experience that 31HP is enough anyway. Just ask one of the Savage guys ! :-? I'm still wanting to give the Super Meteor a try-out ... when it gets here ? But Years ago when I was looking at the Sportster for the first time , I might have got a Triumph 790 , but the Sportster had the belt drive so I went with it. Since then , I've learned that the modern chains are a better breed than the older chains. The 790 motor was carbureted then the 865 was the injected version of the same bike. Then came the 900 liquid cooled versions. I figured the 865's were the best of the breed , but the Triumph's seem to be programed for "MAX-POWER" , instead of everyday communing. We are talking about cheep transportation here ... I think ??? :) |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 07/08/23 at 09:36:58 Honda Super Cub 125 , 168 mpg , ok , 150 mpg at WFO ;D |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 07/08/23 at 09:46:29 Seems like all the 2019 R/Es got the best mileage, might be a old report. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 07/08/23 at 11:19:34 Heading into retirement you have opened my eyes to mpg for my next bike so I can ride for cheap. The tracker is my hot rod , mpg unknown , can’t be good that’s for sure. I’ll be buying a new bike and later an electric bicycle. Plan to be on 2 wheels for many more years. There are many retro styled bikes to choose from. As much as I hate cookie cutter bikes , help me blend in a bit. Tracker draws attention wherever I go , I guess I should embrace it instead of being antisocial towards like minded folks. I simply want to ride. I find I have to ride responsibly when riding with others. I prefer only one other to ride with , then I can relax a bit. Preferably riding with other thumpers is super fun then my heart opens to all , I dream about a ride with nothing but thumpers. Only place I know of to find willing participants would be an Alice’s Restaurant at 4 Corners on a Sunday morning. At 4 corners on a Sunday morning you will see some very cool/vintage bikes by the dozens , might even meet someone famous . It’s like a rolling outdoor museum. Every garage hidden wonder comes from 100 miles around to ride here and hangout for a bit. You name it you might just see one here , bout 100 miles or so from here. Tracker needs to be seen there , definitely ! There is also the Breakfast Run on Sundays too , north of Golden Gate a very scenic ride when not fogged in. Riding across the Golden Gate is a crazy cool experience. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by LANCER on 07/08/23 at 14:22:56 In the late ‘50’s or early ‘60’s my mother and I were driving across the Golden Gate Bridge, it was during a storm, the bridge was swinging a lot as we crossed and they closed the bridge just after we made it across. It was a wild ride. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 07/09/23 at 12:06:38 Lancer , did you grow up around here ? |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by LANCER on 07/09/23 at 13:47:00 Ruttly, Born in Marysville ‘49; moved to Olivehurst at 5 yrs. ‘55; then to Cupertino at 10 yrs. ‘60; then to Oklahoma in ‘67 upon HS graduation. After that it was college (Parks College of Aeronautical Technology) for 2 years and then the US Army in ‘69. Then Vietnam … Yeeee Haaaa Just 2 years at Parks ? Yes, too much partying and not enough studying. It happens. [ch128526] |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 07/09/23 at 18:19:04 About 2019 being the best year for MPG ? My 2022 Meteor is a great flat-lander's bike and I'm averaging 83mpg. I wouldn't ride double on it across the country , but ridding single on it would be just fine. The RE-Company seems to give a hoot about fuel millage over getting every ounce of HP out of every "cc" and I think that is a good thing. I would rather Honda make a 500cc version of their 350 Highness and sell me one of them rather than getting the 650 twin RE Super Meteor ... But ... who know if Honda will ever come-a-round to my way of thinking ? Maybe it's a little on the under-Squair side , even for a Thumper ? https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_cb350_h-ness.html |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Dave on 08/04/23 at 12:15:06 I just had lunch with some "old" motorcycle buddies, and one of them was riding a Benelli 500cc Leoncino. It was a nice looking motorcycle. He said it was very comfortable to ride and easily kept up with traffic on the interstate.....he said he had it up to 105 mph once. It is a water cooled parallel twin. It looked like some luggage and a small windscreen and it would be ready to go touring! It weighs 460 pounds....which is only 10 pounds less than my 800cc BMW - that makes it seem a bit heavy for a smaller bike (but the weight did appear to be down lower and the seat was considerably closer to the ground). https://www.motorcycle.com/specs/benelli/standard/2022/leoncino/500/detail.html |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 08/04/23 at 19:35:14 The fender set-up is kind-a odd . Then the liquid cooled thing too ... but somebody should like it ! ;) They do make a proper looking bike in their 400cc. https://www.motorcycle.com/specs/benelli/standard/2023/imperiale/400/detail.html But there are those pesky inter-tubes again ! ................. I'm beginning to wonder if the Super Meteor will ever get to America ? I just did the 12,000 mile oil change and checking the valves on the 350RE. It still fits my daily route just fine and gets GREAT fuel millage doing it , so I'm happy with it. It's OK with leveling off at 70 mph on flat ground , but the fuel millage drops to the 70mpg neighborhood. It's possible to put a performance cam in the 350RE to get an added 20% HP gain and just keep it. The only time I want more power is while ridding double or in the mountains . That's the plan if the Super Meteor don't work out. There was a saying assigned to the RE-Himalayan that went : "It won't get to the designation first but - it will always get there" I feel the same way about the 350RE motor. The one I really want is a 500cc version of the Honda Hiness. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 08/04/23 at 23:32:26 Think there is a good possibility I would buy the Honda 350 but yes it should be a 500 , Honda needs an updated GB500. But a 350 from Honda might cut the mustard. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 08/05/23 at 12:53:39 Yes Rutty , The RE350 Meteor is virtually a lower seat version of the Honda 350 , or more correctly the Honda is a higher seat version of the Meteor RE350 ? ;D One is 72mm bore and 86mm stroke (6100rpm-HP) (RE in its many forms) Other is 70mm bore and 90mm stroke (5500rpm-HP) Take your pick ? All the other numbers are a toss up, the "Hunter 350" is the lighter one . Like you said , border-line enough HP for USA , but more than enough for most of the world. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 08/05/23 at 19:43:11 It’s about the ride , learn to relax and enjoy the ride and the world around you as you thump down the road. Find new roads cause they lead to more roads. Therapy , everyone needs some therapy , some more than others ! Bleed you brain of all thought and just ride. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 08/05/23 at 21:19:27 Your right ... I need some new roads , even though I like the back-way I normally take to town . Putt Putt-ing around at 50mph is super relaxing , and not slowing for the curves makes it even better ! ;) It don't take a monster bike to have fun ridding , but It does take a nice road to have fun ridding. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 08/06/23 at 11:46:29 I prefer the long way around. Back in the day I commuted on one of my SR500s. On Friday night instead of straight up the freeway home I would take the long way home head west instead of north over the hills to the coast then ride north between that point and home is what is most likely no longer open “Devils Slide”. Three or four mile stretch of unstable coast line that constantly slipping into the sea. Looking out over the Pacific about 1000 ft from the road to the sea , at night absolutely no light , windy , wet , winding uneven roadway from being repaired constantly. It was always a thrill ! Crash there they may never find you , absolute ideal riding , exciting on the edge riding. I was always in fear of loosing my lights on that road , hell it was a scary ride every Friday night with lights , hella fun ! Face your fears , find new roads. I miss that road , in daylight the view is fantastic. |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 08/07/23 at 16:18:36 Now that I'm retired : I get to take the long way just about every where I go , " Just one of the perks of the job ! " ;) I just LOVE my JOB ! :) .......... I never had one of the SR500's but I rode one once , I got a SX650 instead. Between them both now the SR might have been the better choice ? |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by Ruttly on 08/08/23 at 12:06:11 I still learning proper retired etiquette (my big word for the day). Practice makes perfect , stop at yard n garage sales , oh whoops where does that road go ? Oo look at the cows , bugs must be near a river , a bridge let’s go see that , closer I get to the hills the winding roads begin , oh what now , really reserve , what time is it. Who knows , who cares ! I’m learning 8-) |
Title: Re: Buying and Selling / Playing and Ridding Post by MMRanch on 08/08/23 at 19:59:16 Just remember: The Short Fast way is Never RIGHT , and The Long Pleasure way is Never WRONG. ;) I had a DR200 for the back-roads rides and it worked great while ridding by myself. I put some Shinko 705's on it and all was good till found the seat was too short for two. |
