Title: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/19/23 at 05:19:43 I bought a savage last week. It is from 1991, first owner, with approximately 5300 miles on the clock. 300 bucks,- :) http://https://i.imgur.com/324DOgKm.jpg It has stood still for a long time in a damp shed and she has quite a bit of oxide. The engine runs like a charm. :) The outside needs some TLC :-*, but, I have a problem. The fuel cap lock will not open. :( I've had it in the penetrating oil for a five days now, and the pins of the lock seem to be free, but I can't get it to open. How to get the lock working again? And what is the best way to break open the lock if nothing works anymore? |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by springman on 06/19/23 at 09:04:09 Wow! Great buy!!! If the key is turning properly in the gas cap and gas cap will still not release I would guess the gas cap may be rusted on the gas tank neck. Keep squirting WD40 (or other) under gas cap and occasionally tap with a rubber mallet. Good luck! |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by Ruttly on 06/19/23 at 11:15:34 Turn the key , push down on the cap not on the key , lightly jiggle the key. Like he said it might be rusted , be patient , keep at it. For $300 you should have a lot of patience , sweet deal. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by verslagen1 on 06/19/23 at 12:31:12 I helped my brother out with a badly stuck gas cap, I hope yours is better. filled the keyway with pen oil for 2 days, refilling when empty. trying the key periodically. then pressed a sealing washer on top and used air pressure to blow the oil into the lock. after 2 days, I got the cap out and it really looked like crap, a lot of varnish and corrosion. 1 full cleaning later and it sorta worked, too much corrosion to work smoothly. the rubber seal might be hard, push down on the cap while turning the key. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/19/23 at 13:33:17 Wow, Those are motivational tips, I really appreciate it.Tanks. Literally everything is stuck, it's worse than grandma's bowel movements. I sprayed everything again with real dw40, up and under and taperdy tap tap tap tap with a rubber hammer from all sides and let it rest tonight.Tomorrow morning I'll hit it again with the compressor in the keyhole and see what happens. I'll lkeep you posted... I'm sure you have as much patience as I do. |

Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/20/23 at 01:41:54 @Ruttly There is old gas in the tank and when I open the fuel tap, it smels realy bad. So I think I,m in for a thread. First thing this morning I took te compressor and blown te key hole. Only WD40 came out. The key does not want to turn, not even a tiny bit. I,v put new WD40 in there and give it more time. http://https://i.imgur.com/GPiqskDt.png I ordered a Raptor and hope te cap is off by the time it gets here. Edit: I put a large screwdriver in the keyhole. And tried to turn the lock. I heard the magic click. The key now turns all the way! :D I put a big pair of pliers on the cap with a cloth around it so as not to damage anything. And now there is also a bit of movement in the cap itself. :) The tank isn't opening yet, but we're getting there. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by Ruttly on 06/20/23 at 09:39:50 Patients , keep at it , don’t loose your cool ! You might need another tank , definitely a cap with key. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/20/23 at 12:25:04 Thank you for your concern, I am patience itself. But a bit out of time for it.(The world is ending soon). I keep at it. http://https://i.imgur.com/dCZjYb7l.png |

Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/25/23 at 09:49:09 Let us talk about Zevenenergy, a fearless and determined individual who has diligently followed all the instructions but, alas, has not been able to loosen his fuel cap. But fear not, my friends, for the Savage Forum holds the key. Zevenenergy has faithfully followed every clue and guidance, yet the cap remains stubbornly stuck. Now, he seeks the wisdom and expertise of the esteemed members on the forum, for their collective power knows no bounds. Together, we shall rise above this challenge and unlock the freedom that awaits. Like I Donald Trump delivering a resolute speech, Zevenenergy's perseverance shall inspire us all. Title: Re: My new ride. Post by Ruttly on 06/25/23 at 10:02:54 Have you tried a small explosive charge ? |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by LANCER on 06/25/23 at 10:07:46 That’s the WRONG outfit for Trump. It doesn’t fit. |

A great way to open things that don’t want to open. Of course, you will have to clean up afterward. Amount of cleanup work = amount of explosive used. [ch128526] |

Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/29/23 at 10:12:51 Update: Penetrating oil dit not help. I've decided to attack the cap. That was not so easy. The savage fuel cap is built like a tank. There was a point where I seriously thought about explosives. Over time I got the top off. http://https://i.imgur.com/y9IdsKxm.jpg But there was no escape, the bottom of the cap fell into the tank. And it doesn't want to get out anymore because it's bigger than the opening. There is nothing to do but make a hatch somewhere in the tank, remove the cap. And then weld the tank closed again. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by verslagen1 on 06/29/23 at 11:20:40 you need to find someone that can build a ship in a bottle. if you can turn the cap over there are 2 screws and it will come apart. might be a lot of effort, but better than cutting and welding. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/30/23 at 06:19:53 I just got my new cap in and I see what you mean. I wil give it my best. Tanks Edit: Ok, that didden,t work. I can't get a hold of it. I have now put a ventilator on the tank to let the petrol in the tank evaporate as much as possible. What do you think, is this, safe enough to grind the tank open and weld on the tank? |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by Dave on 06/30/23 at 11:05:39 I sure wouldn't cut open the tank. I likely would get some thin nosed vice grip pliers and try to get a grip on the cap, then use any method possible to start reducing the size of the cap. Hacksaw blade, nippers, etc. What shape is the tank in? Was there fuel inside? If so......be careful with anything that could make sparks. If you are in doubt set the thing out in the sun and let it bake for a while. |
Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 06/30/23 at 13:11:00 Hi Dave, I tried but it was impossible. You just can't see what you're doing and the opening is too small to maneuver. I took your warning to hart and I filled the tank with co2 from an old fire extinguisher and sawed open the tank using the drill press. http://https://i.imgur.com/BJV9iSBm.jpg The gasoline that was in it, was very old and smelled realy terrible. As if the faeces of a mummy from the time of the pharaohs were reactivated by the olfactory fluid of a skunk x 10. It has created a black layer in the tank as if it has turned into tar. I don't know how long the petrol has been in it, but I think more than 15 years. http://https://i.imgur.com/uWGOhckm.jpg There is not that much rust in the tank I can wipe it off with my finger. Everything is bone dry now, so I think its save to weld on it. I just need to find a way to clean the tank. |

Title: Re: My new ride. Post by zevenenergie on 07/01/23 at 01:23:11 Rust isn't so much the issue, it's the layer of tar that the old gasoline has turned into that is the problem. I cut the cut piece into quarters to test what I can solve it with. It turns out that diluted sink unblocker dissolves the tar after half an hour. :) I will weld the tank now. Those who are going to die salute you. Edit: Its welded. I used Tig with aluminum bronze. Not my most beautiful welding job, but it's closed. http://https://i.imgur.com/L54TBYnm.jpg If you want to prevent that it also happens to you... Then check whether those 2 screws at the bottom of your cap are tight. Because with me they were half loose. And so the mechanism that pull the pins in, no longer worked. Have a nice day :) (And if it happens to you then, Make a hole right onder your Cap and tighten the 2 screws). |
