Title: Chopper wiring without cdi box?
Post by Arty Dodger on 04/11/24 at 16:54:00

hi there I’ve built my chopper wiring following the chopper wiring from the chopper wiring in Technical and have some questions. I’ve been also watching a YouTube showing how to do chopper wiring. Everyone of them online doesnt include a CDI box so it has me thinking. Is it necessary?

I can get the bike to run the starter motor but that’s about it. Then the starter solenoid starts clicking. Could that be because I may not have a good grounding or that my wire connected to the starter motor is a 10 AWG wire?

Unless you have another way to time when the spark plug fires, you need a CDI.  You will be taking a serious technological step back in time if you want to time the spark without a CDI.

You should hear the starter solenoid click before the starter motor turns.  The solenoid should be in the electical path to the starter motor.  Your set up doesn't sound right.

I don't know what chopper wiring youtube's your watching, but going without a CDI makes no sense to me.
